Best Training Books?

WSB doesn’t have any books. Their information is pretty musch free.

You could print out and bind the 8 keys and the periodization bible.

Their seminar video comes with a compilation of articles. I really liked the seminar set.

Louie Simmons special strengths video is great too.

I would also highly reccomend CT’s black book. one of the best balances of science and practicality. Obviously a CT trademark.

The coaches strength training playbook by Joe Kenn is freakin awesome. Really worth the money (on a budget- i picked it up online for $15). Actually worth far more than the price tag. Kenn uses the tier system, a conjugate based training system that is influenced by westside, although it is NOT westside.

If he likes science then I really like science and practice by zatsiorsky.

Mel Siff’s Supertraining.

You could write a T-nation article about most paragraphs in Supertraining. It is expensive, and it’s worth it. It’s available from elitefts.com, like most other strength books worth buying.

So tell me …does anyone know any books that are coming out worth getting?

BTW, I based my recommendation taking the cost factor into account. I think CT’s Black Book and his Modern Strength and Power Methods are both excellent. But each one is like twice the price of Justa’s book. But if your budget allows, get CT’s Black Book; if not, consider Justa’s book.

There are many awesome books around and many of them have been listed by already. IMHO I would give a nod to Pave’s Power to the People. If your dad hasn’t done much lifting in a while and you want him have plenty of options then PTP is great. Strength or hypert. it covers both of them well. Many people may find it too simple but that’s it’s beauty. Just the info on safe lifting for deadlifts is worth the cost of the book alone (although I do admit the book is a bit exy for compared to sum).

Zatsiorsky’s book is great but unless your old man is into text books he probably won’t enjoy it a whole lot. Pavel covers a decent amount of science without getting too technical a losing the average reader.

Bewond Brawn by Stuart McRobert is also a good choice. The programs might not be as glam as the likes of King or Poliquin but they can still yield great results.

Be careful not to get your dad sucked into the info overload. Some people feel that any program with less than 100 sets and 20 exercises is crap. Truth is, most lifters would benefit from focusing on less fluff and more of the meat and potatoes such as promoted by the likes of Pavel and McRobert.

Good luck, I not it’s hard finding the right present for your old man. If all else fails, try getting him a Mag-Lite or Sure-Fire flashlight. Most blokes love em (I think it’s that genetic predisposition towards fancy tools that us guys have from birth to death).

Even though it’s not really about training, I highly recommend “Muscle: Confessions of an Unlikely Bodybuilder.”

It’s a great read and very entertaining.
great book. Im re-reading it right now. I read it every nite before i get to bed… and i can never fall asleep. All i think about is growing. haha. Good read. Its not a technical book its a good entertaining book though.

if he’s a powerlifter i would go with the westside videos available at elitefts

hey BigDirk-
send me your dad’s name and address and we will send him the “Ultimate Guide to Massive Arms-EDT”
by Charles Staley for Fathers Day. Send it to julianne@edtsecrets.com thanks-Julianne
What great customer service!!!

im liking the idea of putting all the westside stuff together.

See my dad is a powerlifting junkie, and competed professionally for awhile. He always laments the fact that during HS and college for him, the only leg work there was was on a universal machine. Hes strong as an ox, but has never really read much on lifting since his pro days. Westside seems perfect. Would all the articles be available on Elite Fitness Systems? If so, which ones would be best, and which would be most important? Im a newbie to Westside myself, so with regards to ordering the articles, which one is most important/should be the first piece on westside that is read?

BigDirk,

You can’t get much better than FREE when you’re on a budget. Take up Julianne on the Staley book. You’ll still have money to buy another book for yourself.

julianne-

i was wondering, could you send the book to my house? My dad lives about 2 hours away from me, but as of right now is in Vermont for about 3 weeks. Im going up there soon, and would like to give it to him personally.

And PS, if u really can do this, i appreciate very much the generosity

I've read just about every one of the aforementioned book in this thread other than CT's work. This is going to sound like a cop-out but I'd recommend all of them.
If you were going to put a gun to my head, I'd say Power to the People by Pavel. Three years ago, my lifting was in a rut and all the books I was reading weren't shaking me up. Pavel's stuff came along and knocked me on my ass. It's deceptively simple and much of what is learned can be applied to ANY lifting program, especially the chapters on breathing and tension. ALso, if you're dad has been lifting for 25 years, there's a good chance that he's got some dings and dents. That in mind, I'd recommend Super Joints by Pavel Tsatsouline. It'll put some grease back in his joints. I do it evrery morning and feel like a million bucks.

This is the ONLY place I buy books. This site searches all of the used book sites so you can pick out the best deal. Hope this helps.

Big Rob

hey does anyone know if poliquin is coming out with a new book? and when is CT’s e book comming out in paperback version? …And does anyone think DeFranco should come out with a book on training?

If you do decide to put together a bunch of Westside articles, you can find some of Dave Tate’s stuff here on T-mag. You can find more on on Elitefts.com.

Now look at that…you can put together a Westside pretty much for free, and you get a free book from Staley. Now you can go buy youorself a book, too.

German Body Comp Program by Charles Poliquin.

kpd315-This is his latest book.
