Best Shoes for Squatting In?

What are the best shoes for squatting in? i currently squat in running shoes which seem ok but i also have a pair of Onitsuka Tigers which may be better for squat as they have a pretty flat thin sole.

Opinions?

I like anything with a flat sole that allows me to feel the ground beneath me.

Gerdy

None.

I’m serious. It’s like having a flat sole, but better. I always hear that you should wear shoes in the gym to prevent accidents, but what good is an athletic shoe really going to do if you drop a 45 on your foot? Seriously, I would love to know.

Barring that, some of these:

Of course, if you aren’t willing to buy/wear weird creepy-looking shoes, follow Gerdy’s advice: something with a nice non-compressible (this is key) flat sole and no ankle support: I hear low-top Chucks or Nike Frees get recommended a lot.

I like wearing my old wrestling shoes.

I picked up some Nike Free’s for like $30.00 at an outlet store to wear to the gym. Good buy, IMO.

Cressey:
“Thou shalt not deadlift in cross-trainers” is actually the first commandment in the powerlifter’s bible. Rather than list all the shoes that aren’t appropriate for pulling, let’s just say that you have four options:

  1. Go barefoot

  2. Wear Chuck Taylors (Converse All-stars)

  3. Wear wrestling shoes

  4. Wear ballet slippers

The author’s favorite pair of Chucks… Okay, just kidding!

I’m a huge proponent of Nike Frees and Reebok Travel Trainers, but I think that both of them still have too much heel lift for deadlifts.

Nike Frees. They’re not only a badass pair of squatting and deadlifting shoes, theyre comfortable as hell for walking and running.

Never use Nike Shox. I hate squatting with my heels raised. here I was sayin, “hey jay cutler does em in Shox.” I fucking hate it. Like all the fellers said flat soled shoes are best for me.

If you’re squatting powerlifting style, then, yeah, a pair of Chuck Taylors will do you. If you are doing Ass-to-the-Grass squats like I do, get yourself some Olympic Lifting shoes. I use another brand that costs $150, but I have heard good things about Do-Win and they are relatively cheap. You can get a pair at Wichita Falls Weightlifting, here:

I love working out in my old wrestling shoes. Not only does it bring back memories of good times, but they also are quite comfortable

You will all laugh but I train a lot in my Globe “castro” slippers. lol

Gerdy

Try barefoot. --added benefit of the floor cooling off your feet.

Yeah Gerdy keepin it gangsta with da slippers!

I wholly endorse the Vibram FiveFingers. The lack of a heel taxes your flexibility a lot more when you’re squatting (it makes OH squats MUCH tougher), plus chicks* dig them.

If you’re going to lift in the Frees, I’d recommend you get the Trainer or Gym version, not the Running version (although the bottom is thinner, at least for the 3.0). The running shoe provides no lateral support, so my feet actually tend to slide out off the side of the sole (I hope that makes sense). It’s really hard to maintain traction for, say, sumo deadlifts.

*I’ve actually had quite a few people ask me about them, but unfortunately none of them were hot cardio bunnies :frowning:

I’m another fan of the Olympic lifting shoes for squatting I’m much stronger with them. Also I occasionally do some olympic lifting where I think there must. Yet for squatting I think they are the best, you can get low easily and I feel much more balanced in them.

Here are a few different types also, little more expensive but defffentily better. http://www.dynamic-eleiko.com/products/adiStarFRS.html
This site has great selection also including the new bulgarian shoes a long with all the other new do win models. http://www.werksanusa.com/products-shoe-shirts.asp

Just kick off the trainers and wear the socks…

I’m pretty sure only two kinds of chicks will dig them, the ones into sensible footwear, and the ones into feet. If you’re down with that, awesome.

My girlfriend swears they’re the creepiest things she’s ever seen. This, of course, just makes me like them even more :stuck_out_tongue:

I also squat & deadlift in the Fivefingers & also Nike 5.0s - when I first started squatting & DL’ing I started in Nike Aquasox (sort of like those thin flatsoled slipper things people wear at the beach or canoeing to prevent rocks from mashing your feet - all have performed pretty well.

You can go barefoot as well if your gym will let you
