Best Drummer Alive?

My favorite is definitely Jon Theodore, formerly of The Mars Volta.
Nothing wrong with jazz fusion.
Before Narada Michael Walden became a song writer/producer he was a farkin good jazz fusion drummer (The Mahavishnu Orchestra).
You should check out his track “led boots” on Jeff Becks album “Wired” --it’s a killer.

Here 'tis - YouTube

Trym Tyrson of Emperor & Zyklon is my all time favourite drummer. Hands down

You mean Trym Torson? (Kai Johnny Mosaker)…yeah man widely touted to be the best black metal drummer today.

I’m a big fusion fan. I play some but I’m more into latin and swing cause there’s just not a lot of fusion gigs out there. I know I mentioned him before but Joel Taylor is one of the best I’ve seen. He can also read better than almost other drummer out there. He does most of the fusion gigs in LA. He also has great perfect pitch.

Billy Cobham and Tony Williams are legendary. I wish I could of seen Tony play. Sounds like you know something about music too.

As far as rock Bernie Dresel is great and how could I forget Abe Laborel jr.!!! (Paul Mcartney’s drummer) Holy shit!!! He blew me away when I saw him.

I think you have to see these guys live before you make a judgement. Most recordings are just an advertisement for the live show where the real magic happens. Some guys are technical as hell but can’t do a regular rock beat. Most studios don’t even use the drummer thats in the band for their album. You think its that guy on the cover but most likely its Terry Bozio.

BTW I’m just a guitar player but I’ve been lucky enough to of played with hundreds of drummers. (no exaggeration) Good timing and groove are most important. Those are the guys I want to play with.

Tony Williams is nice, but I’m a total sucker for Mike Portnoy.

Anyone mention Jimmy Chamberlin yet (ex of Smashing Pumpkins)? In fact, is he still alive these days?

Yeah, I did.

I always liked the drummer from the Police. Can’t recall his name though!
Also like Larry Mullen Jr. of U2

I wanted to throw in that dude from the Stray Cats…he’s just got the snare and the one cymbal, but he’s pretty cool to watch when he’s dancing around and then jumping up on top of the drum while playing it.

Stewart Copeland.

Great drummer.

Ginger Baker - Cream

Me. :)Other than that, of course Peart is THE man and he’s always on everyone’s drummer list. How about Buddy Rich? Anyone remember him?
Completely. Rich is a badass.

My vote has to include him.

Mike Portnoy
Peart
Rich

RIP Bill Rieflin

I was at this show, NYE '89 or '90 at the Riv. Phenomenal drummer and an even better person from what I hear.
