Best Discipline to Start With?

I’m looking to start studying some form of martial arts. I don’t have any illusions about becoming the next MMA great. My main purpose for this is basically defense. For whatever reason I seem to have gotten into far more than my fair share of fights over the course of my life. Typically I get the best of it, but thats not to say I don’t get hurt. I put some one in hospital but end up with a dislocated jaw, that kind of thing. I’m normally a pretty nice guy so its not that I’m going looking for shit, but if some one fucks with my friends, my girl or does something way out of line to me (swing a bar stool at my head) they are asking for me to hurt them.

Basically I am interested in learning how to fight, so I can end fights quicker if they arise, enter them with more confidence, and generally keep myself from getting too hurt. How ever, since I know so little about this stuff besides what I see from watching UFC I have no idea what to study or where to start. Advice?

The art of fighting w/o fighting.

Now normally I would be a smartass and say only that. But…really…truly… learn to put yourself in situations where you won’t have to fight.

The people that I know that can whoop the most ass, rarely have to use it outside of their job… ie, professional fighter, police officer, Army Ranger, bail enforcement, etc.

I know you believe you’re not looking for shit to happen but, it could be a subconcious desire (why you found it important to tell us you put someone in the hospital for example) or simply not choosing the right atmosphere to be in.

If you’re going the kind of place that someone wants to swing a barstool at your head you need to find a classier joint.

point-blank. period.

Fighting outside of a sanctioned event or it being your job (police officer) is not cool. There’s nothing noble about it. It does NOT make you a badass. As a matter of fact it makes you a DUMBASS who can’t resolve conflict with the most lethal weapon he has.

It also means you can’t decipher and de-escalate situations. Which is pretty easy once you get used to it.

Even further it probably means that you have far too much ego involved in your life decisions and I guarantee that means more people are making decions for you (indirectly) than you think.

Take control of your life.

Avoid the fight.

Thats cool.

This better be one drastic ass situation.

Avoiding them all together solves this easily.

Ok now that I sounded like a after school PSA or the black dude from Never Back Down.

There are so many MMA schools around that its getting silly. If you just want to defend yourself any of them will suffice.
Give us your location and we can probably reccomend a few.

Normally I would say a good progression is Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling (preferably at the same time if you could start in high school and try out for your team in say 9th grade or so), and then jiujitsu.

Muay Thai Plumb will help you gain the kinesthtic(sp?) sensitivity that can carry you in wrestling and jiujitsu. It’s that “touch” that is the important thing, that will carry you through each sport.

Sidebar
Imo GOOD thaiboxing schools have had a pretty decent emphasis on boxing (not just dutch style MT schools either)… I’ve seen a lot of thai guys with GREAT hands… so maybe a specific boxing coach may not be needed but I’d find one anyway far to many nuances to miss.
end sidebar

Now if you can do me a favor, tell me a reason you want to learn how to fight other than to beat someone’s ass. Because no offense intended but you really sound like the kind of person that most guys who CAN fight make fun of.

But thats ok because a lot of us WERE that guy. I’m just trying to give you a fast forward lesson on what you should be pursuing the martial arts (hell even taekwondo and shit) for.

Alright, fair enough. I wrote this kind of late so a lot of this didn’t come across the way I wanted it to. Certainly I could have avoid some, or even a lot of the fights I’ve been in. However, I have avoided a lot, I have been flat out attacked or had friends of mine in close proximity flat out attacked several times. As far as avoiding places or situations, I’m reasonable. I sure as hell don’t roll up to a dive bar in East Oakland on a Friday night looking like a white douche bag frat boy, but at the same time I’m not going to avoid going to chill with friends at the local pub because some guy might be drunk and decide that he has a problem. Truth of the matter is, the last serious fight I was in I got jumped right on my own goddamn patio and got my head stomped into the cement. That is not a night that I look forward to repeating.

Think what you may, but I really hate to fight. The only “fighting” that I’ve ever taken pleasure in has been wrestling or boxing matches with friends. Honestly any street fight, bar fight, fight on the playground growing up, whatever you want to call them, I’ve been absolutely terrified. For instance, the bar stool thing I brought up. That guy came within inches of smashing a bar stool on my head I was scared to death, and ended hurting him pretty bad. The fear didn’t stop with the end of the fight though because I was detained by bouncers and the police and paramedics showed up. I figured I was going to jail for sure. This whole thing was started by this guy’s girlfriend, I didn’t even know he existed until I was dodging the bar stool.

The brings me to the first reason for wanting to learn how to fight that is not beating ass. Getting away from fear. Knowing how to fight would probably actually keep me out of fights. Knowing that I would most likely win if things were to come to blows would allow me to defuse situations more calmly. There would be no reason to throw the first shot to get the upper hand or start to get involved in an escalating shouting match. Another reason for wanting to study a martial art is that I have always admire the discipline and conditioning of martial artists.

I hope this helps, I didn’t mean to come off as a jackass.

Do one that is fun for you, try out the free classes around you. Maybe they will help mature you also. http://www.ifl.tv/ little tips from actual pro MMA fighters, all agree street fighting in any form is stupid and should be avoided. Even them pros, could DIE in a street fight very easily.

Just do something that is fun, I did boxing for a while since it was close and cheap. I loved it, great conditioning and sparring was awesome. Too bad money issues stopped me from going anymore for awhile though I plan to do it again.

You do sound like a typical skinny teenager who is looking to get some revenge on some bullies though, this is not the reason to fight. I absolutely hate those guys who take a few MMA classes and walk around like their tough shit, no you aren’t. Anyways you should reflect on why you want to fight, its a ton of fun and some of the best workouts you will ever do but don’t think you’ll be god because of it.

Thats everything I needed to know.

let us know your location and I’m sure everyone will reccomend a good place for you to train.

Like I said, there’s a lot of MMA schools now so no reason to not learn everything simultaneously. If at all possible I’d reccomend a Muay Thai school but you’ll eventually need some wrestling/jiujitsu.

Are you looking for MMA or for a TMA?

I am not big on MMA for self-defense for a multitude of reasons, namely the reliance on BJJ.

Any martial art, as long as taught by a good teacher and not a McDojo bullshit place, will benefit you if you’re looking for self defense. But there is no “best” style.

Look for something that you like and go with it. Research the shit online- wikipedia has a pretty decent section on the different martial arts and what they entail.

Lift weights.

Guys with big traps don’t get messed with.

LOL. No shit.

If I got into a fight, the last thing I would do is try to end the fight quickly, as that would mean I’d go for a stomp kick to the chest (great way to break rips or stop a hear), a front kick to the knee (great way to give knee injury), or a takedown or judo throw (great way to give a guy a concussion when his head hits the concrete).

If I got into a fight, I’d throw a couple of nice leg kicks to make the guy fall down. Then I’d mock him in front of everyone. “Get up.” LOL.

That would a) keep me out of jail; and b) harm him way worse than a broken bone. Shaming someone is way more effective than f*cking them up.

Frank had a great series of videos on MMAtoday.

very wise.

Actually I’m a fucking idiot for not posting this first… ChenZen’s avatar reminded me.

EVERYTHING you need to know about self defense is right here:

as bas says “everyone underestimates the kick in the groin”.

“Then like this, i slit your throat, and the fight is over…”

So you DID see never back down!!!

HAH you just outed yourself!!!

No I agree, damn near everything else can be fatal… judo throw on concrete (plenty of people die from falling and hitting their head) all the way to just a properly placed kick to the kidney’s.

You never know what kind of shape someone is in, people have DIED from less… While I’d rather get judged by twelve than carried by 6… i’d rather be able to just go home that night.

Seriously why cant everyone just get some beers at home, lock the doors, and have a nice inside?

Like where tf do you live that people are stomping you out on your porch.

And think about this, too. If you go to take down a trained person, he’ll try to sprawl, get on his butt, or something. You won’t just slam the guy down. He won’t just fall back or flail around.

An untrained guy? Who knows what spazzy shit he’ll do. Something dangerous to himself, that’s for sure.

from experience…if you don’t get proper penetration and just end up with their leg in the air, they try to ddt you or just hit you from there, often times it results in something that we go “hey thats illegal!” which is the downward elbow to the spine.

hurts a looootttt more than most think it does.

That said, always shoot the low outside single you miss it. its all good… i was just pickin up my contact. lol

LOL. Very true. Guys who don’t know how to break fall or sprawl are the ones who end up flailing into a concrete barrier in a desperate effort to escape.

Good post Xen, and yes “MMA” schools are becoming the new mcdojos. As Xen said avoid the conflict b/c that simple bar fight turns into simple assault or say you sock someone and heaven forbid he hits his head on the curb and is put into a coma, you can officially considered yourself fucked.

You get the ideal, plus pro fighters usually are good for avoiding street fights for two reasons. There not getting paid and if they get hurt fighting while fighting some john doe off the street guess what u don’t get paid when your hurt, and plus all the legal issues at hand.
