Berardi and McDonald Face Off This Wednesday

Antiliberal
I can’t speak much for Atkins, but McDonald was the first (that I know of) after Di’Pasqualte to incorporate the notion of ketogenic dieting as a training strategy. He also was the first to talk about the CKD, and its implications. Atkins was more general whereas I see Lyle as more specific. Lyle was open and honest too. As his training and knowledge base increased, so his thinking evolved and he certainly would say that what he said at first, was not what he would day now.

Vain

Lyle McDonald is an endurance athlete, so comparing his muscle mass to Berardi’s is just plain folly.
He certainly doesn’t seem to be into keto diets exclusively, and from what I have read by him (not his book, mind you) it seems he sees it mostly as an effective way to successfully lower calories.

It’s today!

I hope everyone who is able to listen to the face-off will come here and tell everyone who missed it what happened!

Vain: If I remember correctly, Lyle got interested in Keto diets after reading Dan Duchaine’s bodyopus. Most of his early work was an effort to improve upon the ideas Duchaine had. I also remember reading that they became friends and shared a lot of ideas before Duchaine’s death.

I plan to tune in. While I have my own thoughts on the subject, its always interesting to hear a few other perspectives.

I will be there.

Lyle is the fucking heat, the guy locked himself away for years writing da book.

I’m doing this all off memory, so don’t quote me…

Lyle became “famous” within the lowcarb circles early on for publishing to m.f.w his 20 week run with Duchaine’s Bodyopus in 1996.

As the story goes, Dan was so impressed that he hooked up with him after he completed his 20 week run. Both Dan and Lyle are cyclist from what I remember, and that was another connection the two had.

2 years later(1998) Lyle published The Ketogenic Diet which is pretty much accepted in the low carb community as the bible of low carbing.

There are more reference per page than any book I think I have ever read.

Anyone who has followed his stuff knows that he is a diet guy, not just a keto guy, and he has done other interviews with Dave Greenwalt.

He can definately be pretty short on m.f.w, but that is hardly unlike King or any number of other strength/fitness/diet writers.

Good stuff. I think JB conceded a bit w/ his stance on CHO’s. With his position and concern about insulin sensitivty, glucose tolerance, and food selection, I’d think he would have defended the importance of selection (i.e. low vs. high GI, II) to maximize fat loss/comp. change more vehemently. But thats a small point - Not surprisingly, they agreed on practically every point…most educated & experienced trainers/researchers usually do even if the route by which they come to the conclusions differs.

  • Overall excellent info & presentation.

Highlights

Jole the little Keener was the first to jump in there ~ wade a go Jole!

John had obviously consumed Dairy in the last 24 hours and I think he was using his microvae at the end - ahhhhhh
Mr Lean chose John to head up the answers more then once because of his suave style.

Lyle sounds like he’s a Mr. Zog’s wax kinda man “dude” - and I think he was chow’n down towards the end.

and Tony from New York asked a great question about being a brick!
ha ha

No there were no low blows other then then Mr Lean Life trying to stir some shit up.
It was a great intro I think if there has not been “behind the scenes kiss and make up” between the two they did a great jod at hiding their discomfort with one another- if there is any.

I think it would be a good idea to continue on with a second one.
Good stuff here between the two

Lyle disagreed with the calorie is a calorie is a calorie - but didn’t provide an answer as to his reasons.
Time may have been a reason.

This was a very good discusiion. I’m sure some people may be upset that John and Lyle agreed on almost everything.

As far as leptin and refeeds, the conclusion both made is that while refeeds are important, the fact that they replinish leptin levels is not that signifigant.

It was a good discussion and made me curious to experiment w/ adding a couple weeks of maintenance calories (time permiting) into my next diet phase (along w/ periodic overfeeding).

Many thanks to John and Lyle for putting in the time- they are both very knowledgable and have the ability to relay that knowledge in a clear, concise manner. Good discussion!
