Bent Over Lateral Raise

I haven’t done this exercise in a good while and had it planned in one of my workouts. I wasn’t using particularly heavy weight. When I began the exercise, at the very top of the movement, I felt a sharp pain shoot through both shoulders and slightly down my arms. I tried one more time and the same thing happened. I lightened the weight and although better, I could still feel the pain. I’m also very anal about having good posture so I was being very strict with that. Any ideas as to why I might be experiencing this pain? I ended up doing posterior deltoids using the Pec Dec with no pain whatsoever.

Thanks!

It’s always difficult to say when you can’t see how you’re doing the exercise, but if you have tight Upper fiber traps, there could be some sort of nerve outlet issue.

Check to see if you’re over recruiting your Upper traps. Have someone see if they can feel the inferior angles of your scapula pop off your ribcage while performing that movement pattern. If so, you may need to retrain the lower traps and thoracic extensors to help with the load.

One thing about posture. I know a lot of my clients that are very aware of their posture, but have all the wrong muscles completely overrecruited to maintain what they ‘think’ is proper posture. You may need some feedback from a qualified therapist.

Hope that is helpful.
