Bench Press and Women

Hey,

I’m trying to educate a girlfriend on weight training. I’ve got her convinced to lift heavy instead of light (she thought she would be come hyooge) but i need to find an article on women and bench pressing that will provide further info. Let me know what you got.

Are you looking for articles about why women should bench press, or bench pressing technique?

I can’t help with the first one. Other than she should bench for the same reasons she should squat, deadlift, etc.

But, there are tons of articles about benching on the site. How about one of the ones by Dave Tate? He’s my favorite.

Hey

I’m looking for why women SHOULD bench.

Ummm, to build muscle? I mean, that’s the obvious answer right?

Muscular pecs = nice cleavage.

Look for articles that dispell common myths. A lot of women are under the impression that benching will make their boobs smaller. My ex-girlfriend used to think that. No basis in fact. Like Sic said building muscle in that region only pushes the boobs out more. A decrease in breast size only occurs from fat loss, and the degree to which it occurs will vary from woman to woman. Also, stress to her the importance of working all muscle groups and avoiding muscle imbalances. A google search should probably pull up some articles on both issues. I can’t think of any specific articles I’ve seen on this website that deal with this.

Great site for women’s training and diet. Good advice, updated regularly and plenty of links. Very funny lady.

women cannot get bulky. They lack testosterone which is required to build lots of muscle and they just don’t have nearly as much like their male counterparts.

Thanks for all the info. My girl thinks she’s gonna get “all muscular” and it will make her look unfeminine…

So you’ve convinced her to train heavier, but she’s hesitant to bench? Odd.

Along these same lines, close-grip bench = no jiggly bat-wing arms.

Also, look into Julia Ladewski and Hannah Johnson, two top female powerlifters (they write some stuff for EliteFTS).

P.S. - That’s Hannah Johnson above. 253 bench @ 148 pounds, 215 bench @ 132 pounds. Her site: http://www.hannahjpt.com/
Julia Ladewski has a 240 bench @ 132 pounds.

Neither of these ladies are anything close to husky or manly.

Female

women have a cap on how big they can get-its not big at all-, lifting heavy will help you progress faster then light weight. As long as she doesn’t drop her bodyfat to well under 10% she should keep her boobs if thats what your worried about.

tell her that her small female mind cannot comprehend what you are trying to tell her and she should just trust you.

really she’ll understand.

Can you imagine what this world would be like if all women were this big and bulky? It’s hard to imagine trying to live in a world like that. I think they call it HEAVEN.
