Ben Johnson Interview /CTV Canada

I know that this isn’t the steroids forum, but I thought this was a general interest post.

July 10th CTV is showing a documentary on Ben Johnson. I know most of us have read the Charlies Francis interviews, but this could still be some interesting viewing.

?Everybody in Seoul was using drugs,? says Ben Johnson. ?I got caught because my country didn?t really protect me.?

Damn. Wish I had CTV, this looks really interesting. Let me know what happens on the show.

I would also like to know what Ben has to say. Please keep us informed,I also don’t have CTV so, I have no way of seeing the interview. Thanks

Aside from this interview and a few other reports, basically those without CTV aren’t missing a damn thing. parliamentary speeches, Canadian news and a retarded show called the red green show are about all the “Canadian entertainment” that would make a grown man puke.

Besides, Ben will just be passing the buck in this interview.

If you type Charlie Francis in google you can find a link to his site which has good sprint training info on it.

Sorry to deviate from my original topic, but I have to rebut any attacks on Canadian TV. While I’m not a huge fan of the “Red Green Show”, it does appear to be popular on American PBS. There are a lot of great shows that make up or have historically made up “Canadian Entertainment” as you’re labeling it - classics like The Kids in the Hall and SCTV, some truly great series have been on CBC such as Twitch City, and one of my all time favourites “Made in Canada”. This Hour has 22 Minutes, which is Canada’s “Daily Show”. Great science series like “The Nature of Things”. And Canadian news coverage, while not being the BBC, is pretty damn good.

Also, in defense of CTV in particular, they show HBO type shows such as Sopranos and Six Feet Under, and silly shows like The Osbournes, fully uncensored on regular, national broadcast TV. Do you have any idea how progressive that is compared to the puritanical standards in America? Have you ever watched TV in America? Everything except premium channels is highly censored and bleeped. CTV plays everything raw without bleeping or censorship.

Not to mention sex education on Canadian television. On Sunday nights these days there seem to be no less than 6 highly progressive sex education shows on the various channels (Americans: Think “Real Sex” from HBO except on regular TV). Sue Johannsen estimates that the US is at least 10 years behind in sex education and general ignorance. Canadian channels have taken the bull by the horns and are providing education to the general public. You can turn on the TV and learn about dildo shopping, filming dirty home movies, and issues related to having threesomes in Canada. Don’t knock it, you’re lucky to have Canadian TV. (Note some of these shows are from the BBC in England.)

Not everything is The Littlest Hobo.

I watched the program on CTV Saturday, but I must have missed the actual Ben Johnson interview segment.

Kiefer Sutherland did a pretty good narration job.

As for the steroids, I don’t know anything about them so I was kind of in the dark listening to all of the Olympic officials talking about the various compounds. It talked a lot about East-Germany’s doping policy and I believe it said that the women began using testosterone when they were 16.

I think I also heard that one of the female athletes had a sex change because of the effects of the steroid use.

I watched it Sat. night. It was nice to see the other side of the story for once. Talking about how rampant drug use is in sport, specifically track and field. It was interesting where they mentioned 5 of the 8 finalists in the 1988 Seoul Olympics 100m final were caught with banned substances at one point in their careers. Like Carl Lewis was clean. Yeah right!

Most of the show dealt with Ben’s drug test, and the circumstances around him getting caught. Ben was supposed to be taking an undetectable steroid at the time (furazabol), but got busted for winstrol(stananozol). Supposedly there was a mix up somewhere, either with the team Doctor, (Dr. Astiphan) or somewhere else. He presumably was taking stananozol the whole time while thinking it was furazabol. That’s the current theory however.

I find it a little hard to imagine they couldn’t tell the difference, especially when Ben said the winstrol tabs made him stiff from what I read in the book Speed Trap by Charlie Francis.

I was a little shocked to see a few people come out of the wood work to talk about the drug use. Richard Pound’s stance from the IOC, as well as some national coaches in the U.S.

Pure stanzalol was found in the urine sample. The only way that could have happened would have been if Ben had shot up within hours of the Olympic final. How likely is that? They convicted him using an “endocrine profile”. It’s just bullshit.
