Belt on the Deadlift

Because if he’s just starting or is doing less than 1.5x(perhaps even 2x) BW he shouldn’t want to use a belt. It’d be hurting himself in the long run by weakening his back.

Where did this magic number come from? I can’t Squat 2x BW yet. So I can’t use a belt? I can DL 600+ beltless…Do you really think that using a belt on my Squats is going to cause me to have a weak back?
I don’t believe you … you can’t squat twice your bw but can dl 600+ … there’s something structurally wrong with you I think you should see a physician

Cant tell if youre being sarcastic or not, but hes a 275 and competes raw.

Do all powerlifting federations allow belts? Even the raw ones?

AKAIK yes.

BTW I find a lot of the lifter I train with prefer the belt to be a little looser for the DL compared to the SQ, also som wear it a little higher for the DL. As others said you have to find a position that suits you.

Tight belt + high reps = lose!
Thanks

Okay, I’ve tried DL with a belt for the past month and today, I pulled a PR without it. I think I will just use my belt for PR squats and presses. I don’t feel like it helps me any on deads.

Beat me to it.

Hanley, everyone knows that belts are only for gear-wearing cheaters. There’s no point in denying it. LOL

Hanley, Steel Nation:
My apologies, but my proffesional opinion guides me in formally DISAGREEING with both of you. Think about it. All of the weakest people in general I see are ALWAYS the ones walking around with a belt on the entire time. Coincidence? i think not :stuck_out_tongue:

“Think about it. All of the weakest people in general I see are ALWAYS the ones walking around with a belt on the entire time.”

Correlation without causation? Perhaps it’s just due to the fact that anyone can buy a belt, but that doesn’t mean they’ll actually train hard. Kinda like buying and wearing a bandana doesn’t really make you a gangsta.lol

I just want to point out the fact that you’re wearing a belt for that DL in your avatar.

I think the problem might have been that the belt was too tight since I used the same hole as I did with the squat. My face felt like it was going to explode from the pressure.

I will take modi and undesired’s advice and attempt the same 3rm this friday with a belt but one hole bigger than what I squatted with.
What happens with the pressure takes some learning. The good news is that there has never been a reported case of anyone’s head actually exploding doing a deadlift.

Just a note on belt tightness, some people prefer it the other way around - tighter on deads, looser on squats. Play around with it and see what works best for you. I like to be able to expand my girth as much as possible while still keeping it as tight as possible.

If you aren’t breaking blood vessels in your eyes or spontaneously causing your nose (or head) to bleed, then it’s not a lot of pressure.

I’ve decided to pull completely raw with some chalk. The belt just doesn’t help me on my dead numbers. Makes my squat jump up 30lbs though.

i skipped a hole page so i dont know if this has been covered, but typically with squatting i put the belt as tight as possible. when i get my air, it makes the weight feel lighter during the unrack.

on deads, i start with the belt a little loose, maybe a notch off from squatting. it helps me breathe a little and also get down, if it is too tight, i struggle to get down properly. ALSO, and this seems like a crucial thing to me, i shove the front of the belt down as far as it will go on my belly. that way it kinda grabs me at the bottom.

also, how about the claims of the belt becoming too much of a crutch? like for example, i feel like right now my “core” is not strong enough, and that this causes me to fold a little with the squat. to counter this, i have been trying to incorporate my belt less or at least wait til heavier weights. i do compete, so i know the benefits of the belt, but i am sort of thinking out loud.

hanley, this is sort of addressed to you…

I use a belt, but not in a very traditional way. I wrap it around my neck and have someone strangle me. I pass out and usually bust my head open on the rack, and when I wake up, I’m super sore. Beats working out.

I dunno tbh… I’ve been unsuccessful with my deadlift so far. No matter how strong my core gets, I still tend to round out. I can only assume this is due to my lower back and not abs being weak.

I don’t see the need to wear a belt on warm ups at all really, I’m just too lazy to put it on half the time tbh!

Try wearing the best one notch loose and pulling it up higher on your abdomen than you use to squat. My belt used to hurt like hell when I would get into the starting position but once I wore it higher (covering the belly button) it felt a lot better.

And yes, only wear the belt for your top sets i.e. 85% of your max and above.

If a belt isn’t helping you at all on your deadlift something strange is going on…

I do that too, but I bite down on the lemon before I pass out.

If its uncomfortable, u prolly put it too low or high. U want when u lift it up on the deadlift to squeeze right into ur abs, not into ur hip bone or too high up.
