Supposedly.

This is really the best way to go about it. (Faking) humility is the only way people won’t think you’re a complete meathead.
I got asked last week by a lady if i was a cop or a firefighter. Said no, paused and said I was on the SWAT Team! she was GAGA the rest of the night. I sell lumber okay…

I get the healthy guy thing, like a group of the employees wanted to order pizza one night, somebody started to ask me if i would want some, and then somebody made a shitty comment about me probably just having a protein bar or shake instead.
Of course it was the fat chick.
I swear to god, in every group I hang out with there’s one person who just can’t shut the hell up about how I choose to eat. I don’t even talk about it. I turn down cookie and I’m the anti-christ or something.

Yeah, I’m sure we’ve all had a fat guy who smokes tell us that eating tuna is unhealthy. That’s always fun.

I play it down especially around women. I’m not afraid they’ll think I’m a meathead - I also play in four bands so that’s not really a danger - but I fear that they’ll realize that I’m really a very skinny guy who just worked hard. I’d rather they think I have great genes for growing muscle than great genes for persistence and determination.

i too do my best to downplay my size, strength. wearing big, dark clothing seems to help. but the summer is coming…
Why? If you don’t mind my asking. Is it an office thing, or are you uncomfortable with the label of bodybuilder?
That’s not to say I think people should be wearing string tanks and shorts everywhere they go, but I was just wondering exactly why you choose to downplay it?
If it comes up, I’ll talk about it a bit, many times get asked for advice, but I don’t make a huge deal about it, but I will address it without issue if someone asks…
Well I have a lot of darker clothing anyways…I’m not much for pink and neon green right now. So that’s why I have a lot of black/navy/grey stuff.
But there are a ton of super fat and out of shape people here, and I hear them talking about the whole ‘baseball/steroid’ thing and they are way off (to the point of saying that gear is injected into the muscle that they are working that day at the gym; just stupiditiy at it’s finest.) and I have also given advice to a few people that have asked me for it; and it’s a waste of my time.
So I just go on with my life and try not to waste my time at work. Especially when I could be posting on T-Nation!
That’s just at work, when I’m out and about I have no problem with the way I look. My girlfriend likes when I have clothing that isn’t super baggy when we are in public. And I’m the same way with her…Mmm…yeah.
Sometimes when people ask me that I tell them,“Once, I didnt want to get to big too fast.” Usually that’s to the morons in the grocery store. My other favorite is when a complete stranger will walk up to me and say “I used to work out like you”. I usually say one of two things to this.“No you didn’t.” or "What happened?!? Most of them will never understand where we are coming from. Wait, maybe I dont understand where they are coming from. I’m much more polite when introduced to someone. My wife had to “help” me with that.

As much as humility does factor in, I think when it comes to women, not only are most not really interested in hearing about it (or grouping you as a ‘meathead’), but most, when they realize that you’re serious about it, become self-conscious as a result.
This is just based on my own experiences of course. Whenever I realize I’m babbling on about nitrogen retention or something meathead-ish with my GF, and I sto pmyself apologizing, she usually says something like “keep going, I think it’s really interesting how you know all this stuff”

What would people see that equates a solid knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology, Bio-Chemistry and general science with being a “meathead” - Doesn’t the term indicate a stupid lunk?
if it’s a guy and he seems cool I say “yeah” and have a normal conversation.
if it’s a loser I say “no” and they generally believe you.
If it’s a pretty girl I say “no, I never set foot in a gym. I was born this way.” With sarcasm. They generally laugh.

In the context of sports, it could be taken to mean as someone who has nothing else in his head and life but the sport in question. However deep and scientific that knowledge might be, it is not a cool thing to be called like one.
Senior year in college, I totaled my car on the interstate. While being loaded into an ambulance, strapped to a board, my neck immobilized, and my shirt having been cut off so I didn’t move my spine, the EMT inquired as my training regimen. In that moment,I was content -lol

ya i remember when i was with my girlfriend looking for my prom suit at Moores (well priced well dressed). the man who was taking my measurements measured my neck at 17 inch’s. then he stopped looked at me for a second walked away to talk to his supervisor. he came back with his supervisor a few seconds later, the supervisor then measures my neck looks at his employee and says “no you measured right its 17 inch’s”.
apparently a 17 inch neck merits enough attention to have your supervisor double check if you can even use a measuring tape.
I also get asked a lot if i play football. and in high school i was the kid who takes “steroids” because i kept a jug of protein power in my locker to mix in with my carton of milk i got for lunch.

I didn’t think a 17 inch neck was that big. I had a 16.5 inch neck before I started training.

If most of the shirts on the men’s rack equal your size, then it obviously isn’t that big. If you have to look hard to find your size, then yes, it probably is.
17" may be big today just because everyone else is so damn weak and pathetic that anyone who moves under their own power is considered “impressive”.
I can say not being able to find a dress shirt because they only go up to 18.5 sucks.
