Behind the Music: Pantera

JPJ was the mastermind behind a lot of their stuff. Bonham was a freak on the drums though-watch the live solo in “Moby Dick” on that DVD they released a few years back. JPJ or Bonham. Not Page. Page was good but definitely playing out of his league in Zeppelin.

BTW, Newbie, go look up a band called “Death” and a guy named “Chuck Schuldiner”.

I wanna chime in on this one! I’m a drummer, so Bonzo is god to me, but John Paul Fucking Jones for the win.

I second that emotion. The strong point for JPJ’s basslines was his timing, more like blues than rock and roll. And that’s a gift of talent, one of those Zen-like things that make a good bassist great.

your mixing it up, I’m talking about the thrash/general/power metal scenes when I say nirvana killed metal.

fact number 1. Find me a death metal band with Rush esque talent. Don’t post again untill you do. Play a guitar asshat, you don’t know shit.

You twist my words to make yourself sound smart, you aren’t.

Yet again, pick up a guitar you don’t know shit.

Nirvana didnt kill thrash…Megadeth was still making albums in 93? What about Anthrax, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Testament, Annihilator, Neverland, Kreator, Dark Angel, and Iced Earth? How about the Clash of the Titans tour?

I just got a boner from hearing all these good thrash bands. Rust in Peace is a religion to me.

I appreciate the replies, fellas, but I’m particularly curious to see what our friend ‘Zephead’ would have to say, given his name and being that he is a guitarist who is keenly tuned in to what constitutes ‘musical talent’.

I’m not really a Zepplin fan, but JPJ knows his shit, and was probably the best memeber of the band.

The notes you don’t play are just as important as the ones you do.

Bands where still playing OMG? You don’t think the huge change in music nirvana brought didn’t affect metal, you are WRONG.

That’s really ironic, just got done listening to iced earth, DA, slayer, exodus playlist.

I play bass.
It’s a tough choice, comparing musicians of different instruments is hard. but I’m still waiting for a list of bands with the same level of talent from stronghold. I’m done with this thread until I see it.

Can you fucking read?

Seriously. Stop asking me the same question. I have answered it.

Not just playing, dickcheese. THRIVING.

And no, I dont think Nirvana’s explosion onto the MAINSTREAM market affected the EXTREME metal market. Some things ran their natural course and died around that time (ie, glam, metallica) but none of that can be attributed to Nirvana. Glam was starting to collapse by 89 and it was obvious after Justice came out that Metallica was not going to be the same with Cliff Burton. Justice was a sick album but if you listen to the change between puppets and justice, its not hard to see that the black album coming.

And that’s why I said Rust in Peace, and not say their album, Youthanasia. I said metal didn’t die out because of Nirvana, it continued to thrive. Nirvana MAY have affected the mainstream, but for the most part, metal continued to grow, the second wave of black metal was during the early 90’s for crying out loud, are you serious?

So wait, why are you comparing Lee Geddy to someone like Erlend Caspersen. They play totally different styles of bass in completely different styles of music. That’s like saying who’s better John Petrucci or SRV? You just can’t compare.

read a post about how death/black metal are so outside the mainstream. You don’t think some of the more radio friendly genres wouldn’t have done better? I realise you don’t give a shit about them but COME ON. Your also using megadeth, a band that probably could have survived a total purge on metal. Simply put I think the 90s would have produced a lot more good music had say, nirvana never existed.

I played bass for about 4 years. I stopped when I started working 12 hour shifts. I’ve been meaing to pick it up again.

The last songs I learned were world of shit my morbid angel and destroy the opposition by dying fetus.

I started to learn some of Cliff Burtons “Pulling Teeth” very hard but fun to play.

You death metal guys ever hear of Puterfactor? They use to practive in a warehouse about 5 miles away from me. Very bad ass but I am not even sure if they play anymore.

I used their demo to get a new box squat PR today haha

Cliff Burton’s stuff is like novice stuff, with maybe the exception of Orion.

Praise the Lord (Opium of the Masses), now that’s hard to play bass and growl at the same time.

Wait? Power and Thrash are radio friendly? Since when did I hear Demolition Hammer or Destruction or even Persuader on the radio?

Saying Nirvana killed “mainstream” metal is basically telling you me you need to stop watching VH1. Megadeth did survive whatever metal purge you’re talking about, their only musical blunder was Risk, and that was all Marty’s fault.

Arguing about the 90’s producing more good music is mute, Glam and whatever crap that was making music was imploding by 1990.

Can you honestly say a band like this wasn’t going to implode? Rick Roll - YouTube
