Beginners Should Reduce BF% Through Bulking?

Forgive me if im wrong but…

beginners should be bulking cleanly in order to lower their bodyfat, by increasing muscle more comnpared with fat, your thus goin to be able to reduce BF% while increasing size, yes???

Sounds like a pretty good deal, im goin to even go further to say beginners with a BF% of around 17% and below should follow that sort of thinking and forget about those abs for the next few years.

Besides id rather be huge at 15%BF for years rather reasonable and 10%BF through cut, bulk, cut, bulk and not goin anywhere, if ya get where im coming from??

Anyways how much better is your body at partitioning nutrients into the body at 10% than 15%?? Where’s Thibaudeau or Berardi when ya need him???

I think it’d be much easier to just cut.

IMO you’ll look better cutting down to a reasonable weight and then bulking.

Unless you’re going for the powerlifter look.

Both ways are easier said than done too…

Faulty logic IMO.

Back in Feb I was 167 lbs at 18% BF, according to many I should have began cutting.

Instead I decided to bulk, I’m 190 at around 15-17% BF (haven’t checked it in a month).

By putting on more muscle you effectively lower your BF%.

And I look a hell of a lot better now for doing it.

Well a lot of it depends on your long term goal. If you want the Abercrombie and Fitch skinny with abs looks or the powerhouse with loads of muscle. You can’t yo-yo between powerhouse and cut body/abs(with the exception of bodybuilders). But even bber’s do it once or twice a year at most. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but that’s awesome progress. Have you been doing cardio during that time to keep fat gain in check?

This assumes they should be bulking in the first place.

Fat people shouldn’t bulk, they should cut.

Skinny-Fat people should eat around maintenance with maybe a small surplus while cleaning up their food choices.

Skinny people should bulk.

I agree that most beginners need to add mass, but a 500-1000 cal surplus is not the best idea in most cases. Beginners get the opportunity to lose fat and gain muscle without the need to drastically increase their caloric intake, why not take advantage of it. On the other hand, overweight and obese individuals shouldn’t increase their calories, they should reduce them. They will be able to lose fat and gain some muscle since their bodies will be more apt to use there fat stores to to supply the needed energy to for muscle synthesis. And, we can’t forget that most overweight and obese individuals already have an appreciable amount of muscle due to requirements of moving their bulk around.

There are many differing opinions as to what shoule be done. This is my two cents.

Firstly, the name of the thread is self-contradicting.

IMO, most beginners should start with the basics (ground breaking!!)

Cutting (which implies fat loss with a strict diet regimen) is too severe. You can’t go from eating twinkies and shit to a high protein, strict “cutting” diet.

How about a beginner should start by training to get stronger using the basic lifts and a basic routine (Starting Strength for example). Along side that, start making better food choices, eating 6x/day, protein at every meal, etc. No need for supplements yet. Why buy them if the person in question isn’t diligent enough to eat every 3 hours?

Then in several months or a year, they’ll have a significantly improved body composition and much better habits. From there, start getting more specific.

Obviously, there are exceptions (like the very overweight or very de-conditioned) which may warrant exceptions and more specificity from the onset.

I have.

He’s in the barn doing tricep kickbacks and crunches on a bosu ball.

It’s been beaten into nothingness.
This forum seems so… repetitive at times.

if your a fat beginner i think just eating every 2-3 hours smaller portions will do something for ya, even if its not totally restricted (i.e. keto)

bulking and not paying attention to your diet at all just leads to fatty muscle. yeah you think you gained a lot of muscle, but so much of it is fat too. I deceived myself onetime in such a cycle and everyone started calling me “beefy” just joking and I thought they were kidding.

Long story short I went on a cutting phase and dropped so much weight in one month! I looked at a picture a month before and my face was effing pudgy! Dropped from 10% BF - 6.9% HUGE difference! People saying I looked bigger even though I wasn’t just my muscles were cut.

I feel you. Since I’ve dropped from 40.234567 % bodyfat to 18.987617 % I’ve seen a pretty noticeable difference in my face as well.

I thought this forum’s title reads “Bodybuilding”, not “Men’s Health” ?

jehovasfitness just became my inspiration, thats awesome progress man, thats excatly wat i was goin for

you just at clean, lifted heavy, slept alot i assume, i really dont think cardio besides maybe twice a week of moderate hit would be needed to keep body fat in check if your eating right…

whats your program look like atm, ie. macronutrient ratios and routine/??

would be muchapprreciated

Routine is pretty basic

4 weeks of 4x8
Monday- Back
Tues- Chest
Thurs- Legs
Friday- Shoulders arms

usually 12-16 sets per large body part, 6-8 sets for smaller body parts

4 weeks of 5x5
same split but I still keep the 4x8 for arms

You can get more info on my nutrition on T-Cell Alpha “What I’m doing to bulk”

I don’t really follow a macro breakdown. I did it a few months ago just to see what I was getting.

If your face was “pudgy” at 10% body fat, you need to see a doctor.

He probably doesn’t start to get lean until 5% bf, like that other guy.
