Beginners Gains

Maybe the tape is a funny tape because it is gym ball tape? Maybe the cm marks are off because it is measuring… diameter… or circumference… or something…
yeah. that has gotta be it. i don’t actually have a ruler at present and the perspective is odd on the vid (need to hold up a shoe or something lolz) but pretty darned sure 10cm is a hell of a lot less than it is on the tape.

Yeah I think something must be different with the measurement. I don’t think its either 9.5cm nor do I think its 9.5 inches.

Hate when I get disturbed and feel self conscious, but you seem to be doing a good job of establishing your space.

Do you use a big fat red pen when you do the exam grades? Don’t work too hard.

I just read thru the bulk of this- wow.

first good job.

your snatch form looks fine.

two- you are making great progress, you are an intellectual trainee
nice work.

O-lifts take a while to learn
and there are like 7 million things to do better with them.
I learned them in college (badly) and it took longer then I liked
really it was about not being the last one to use the broomsticks

tomorrow… work. then i’ll see how i feel about hitting RSR 3x3 @ 95%. i suspect i can possibly do it :-/

stop setting yourself up for failure. When I’m about to bust a PR I dream of it all day imaging myself getting it, killing it and doing it with poetry and ease. Sometime I get to the bar and it works, sometimes it doesn’t but then I just tell myself that I’ll get it tommorrow, next week, next time.

Here’s how you have to think of it: I can do this. no try, no ifs and no butts  It’s only a matter of time.

I like the plank vid. I usually start from a lying down position and try to slid/lift/roll the weight onto my back then push my body off the floor into the plank position. hmm Maybe your way would be easier to start it. I’ll try this next week to see if it’s easier. My way gets my shirt all twisted, which is annoying.

I do a lot of visualization before I do my lifts. Sort of like mental practice before.<-- I also do this before I have to be in front of an audience too. I like to imagine all scenarios and being prepared for all of them. lol

I have extremely small wrists. Less than 5.5 inches. 9.5 cm equates to 3.7 inches.
Damn, centimeters are that big?
I always think of it as “centipede” (small) and not “centimeter” (a mere 100 of these makes a meter)

Those are some long planks, nice work Alex.

Lol! Love the plank vid! You got a strong core indeed. And those GHRs looked good to me! No hyperextending from my POV.

And congrats on making progress with the RSR. Knew you could do it! And I’m glad that you feel confident to give it another go. Go for it, girlie!

minimal - nah, i use a pencil so i can easily go back and change my mind

i’ve figured out the measurement. my gym ball is supposed to be 60cm - presumably that means a line bisecting it would be 60cm. so the measuring tape is whacky. i guess 60-70 on the measuring tape would be different from 0-10, too, since as the ball inflates it inflates out as well as up.

kmcnyc - hi  thanks. i still use the stick sometimes. am glad that i didn’t learn alongside other people because i think i would feel pretty demoralized at how slowly i’m learning. still, rehabbing my injuries along the way, which is the main point of it for me.

nimain - hmm… i really never thought of using visualization to help psych myself up. yes, i will get it. i will get it next time, in fact. thanks very much for that.

charlie - thanks. i did the vid for you because you asked about how i got it into position and i couldn’t think how to explain it. it does make my shirt ride up a bit at the back sometimes, but there is a way of kind of flicking it up. sometimes it ends up higher up by my shoulders and othertimes lower down by my butt. not sure which is harder… i suspect higher is more work for the shoulders and lower is more work for the core.

nikki - yep 100cm = 1m. 10 millimeters = a centimeter. maybe there is a millipede / centipede thing going on (the little critters with their legs)? i dunno… thanks for the compliments on my planks. i used to do 2 minutes unweighted so feeling a little lazy with only doing 60 seconds. will work on keeping my hips down a little more (squeeze those glutes!) and i want to see how much i can load these up… mostly because the most i’ve ever seen any of the dudes at my gym do is 15kg for 60 seconds and so they sure are underachieving considering how much they can deadlift and squat!

masch - thanks! i wasn’t sure about the GHR - but nice to know they look good to you. i will keep on at them!

sorry i didn’t manage a soundtrack, puff. think there is something to do with importing my i-tunes into i-movie, though, so i’ll see about next time!

YESTERDAY -

snuck to the gym in the middle of my grading… sucked, basically. just did some snatches and left. mind on grading.

TODAY -

finished the grading so feeling much better at the gym.

finally got 40kg snatch on second attempt! PR!

Front squat 6x2 @ 80% / 36kg. RSR base. Will reattempt the 3x3 on Tuesday or Wednesday.

GHR 5x5.

Hehe. Your weighted plank looks awesome and you’re a cutie Alexus! No soundtrack required, although it could have been very funny, I’ll admit. And the assisted GHRs with the stick is brilliant. Those are just soo hard. I’d feel like a real badass if I could ever get to the point of doing them without any assist.

Contrats on finishing the grading AND the awesome snatch PR. I knew you’d get there!

great news on the PR Alex

Great on the PR

Do you find the stick better than just dropping down slowly and controlled then catching yourself with your hands?
The stick looked good i just wonder if you are just switching it up from dropping and catching yourself or you always do them this way.

Uhm… this is awesome.
Congratulations.

dammit I cannot see these GHRs with a stick!

thanks for the congrats on the 40kg! it was a big deal for me because i’ve been trying to get it for a while now, and i’m calling it 2/3 bodyweight (though it is just a tad under).

i have Nikki to thank for the stick assistance idea. I do pylo-push-up them sometimes but find it harder to keep tension in my glutes / hammies doing it that way. feel like my hammies will be ripped off so they switch off. I try and use just enough assistance with the stick to keep tension in my glutes / hammies through the whole set. not strong enough to have only one hand on the stick yet. not strong enough to do them with an orange band around me, either.

TRAINING:

only had 50 minutes so didn’t do my usual eva / rolling warm-up and left the oly bar alone.

sky humps 15
plank 30sec

(for activation. thanks to the o35 forum for reminding me…)

circuit-like:

Chin-ups 5x1
Standing one arm press 10kg 1x5
Chin-ups 5x1
Standing one arm press 10kg 1x5

Inverted row 1x5
Push-up 1x5
Inverted row 1x5
Push-up 1x5

decided to try and give my left arm some extra work (pull snatches unevenly sometimes)…

one arm barbell snatches (heh)
10kg easy
15kg not so easy for left hand
20kg 0, 1 (needed to run forwards a bit), 0 - right hand only

snuck the 7kg blue ball next door and did some throwing it at the wall. think i’m getting the hang of how you are supposed to throw with my right hand. left hand is a bit slow to catch on. doesn’t help that the ball is about basketball sized and feels a bit big for my left hand to grip properly.

waiters walks. just with my left hand with the ball. fingers and wrists were wobbling from trying to grip it.

ps - my sent personal messages aren’t turning up in my sent folder so maybe people aren’t receiving them. if you are female and have sent me a pm and i haven’t replied i didn’t mean to blow you off!!!

Very well done, yippee! I’m very excited for you.

Duly noted.

WOW congrats on the snatch! That is so freaking cool! 2/3 body weight!
