Beginner! Need Advice!

Hi. I am 16 and 1/2. I’m a senior in high school and I decided to lose weight and muscle up. I’ve been lifting for about a year (at the school gym). I decided to start training more seriously, and I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers.

My Info:
Age- 16 1/2
Weight-180lbs
Height-6’0

Supplements:
HOT-ROX
BCAA
Fish Oil
Green Tea Extract
Protein: Isopure (zero carb) 3x daily

Diet:
Low Carbs
High Protein
No Sugars or Salt

Workout:
Cardio- 45 Mins 5x a week
Weights- 60 mins 4x a week

What do I need to change?

You might want to use the Anabolic Diet (big thread in this forum) instead of straight up low carb. You get a great energy boost with the carb refeeds on the weekend which will help alot for building muscle and hormone regulation, among other things.

But otherwise, lift big and eat big.

instead of Isopure 3x a day just get a post workout drink like Surge which will be a lot more beneficial. Instead of drinking isopure 3x a day just use Surge post workout and eat other protein meals instead.

Concentrate more on weights and decease your cardio. Maybe do weights 5x a week and add cardio after your workout 2 times a week as you need to recover and need about a couple days off a week.

Remember that you burn more calories in total doing weights then cardio and once you build muscle, it will help burn even more calories.

ahh thank you everyone for such quick and helpful replies. but the reason i said i would be taking Isopure three times a day is because I’m a vegetarian and since I’m 16 im dependent on my parents, and I generally eat what my mom cooks.

would it be ok to stick to this (as a substitution for my protein meals) and then add a Surge for post workout?

How are you doing low carb and high protein as a vegetarian? Eating some animal products? (Noticed the fish oil.) Subtracting out fiber?

Could you post your diet? Interested to see what a normal day looks like.

Also, decide what your PRIMARY goal is - to lose fat, or to build muscle mass. If you want to slim down, it’s a good idea to focus on slimming down and then on building more mass. If you want to focus on building mass, the approach will be quite different. But you should really focus on one of those goals at a time - it will work a lot better that way. Yes, you can try to do both at once, but it will take longer and results will not be as good. So which one is it - is your priority to lose fat, or to gain muscle?

Ahh i forgot to mention for the next 3-5 months i wanted to just lose fat, and then start building muscle. But yesterday i was talking to a real bodybuilder and he said that it would be a lot harder to build muscle that way. He suggested to bulk up and then cut.

as for my diet:

Morning:
Protein shake

Snack 1:
Nature Valley Granola Bar
Peanuts

Afternoon:
2 slices Whole Wheat Bread
1 Cup of baked Beans

Snack 2:
2 Tbsp Peanut Butter
6 Crackers

After workout:
Protein shake

Dinner:
2 Soy Burgers
6oz. low fat yogurt

Before bed snack:
Protein Shake

For a vegetarian you sure don’t eat a lot of veggies.

Depends what your main goals are really. if your main goal atm is to lose weight and get lean, id suggest to diet first. but, if you want to get big and dont mind not being lean for a while, you could bulk first as the extra muscle will help you get lean faster. but, if you read the articles on here you should realise that being lean first can have its benefits like increased insulin sensitivity which is better for building muscle.

IMO i dont think it would make a massive difference whether you ‘bulk’ now or after you get lean, just depends on how you go about it, but then again im pretty much as novice in training and dont really have the experience to answer this fully. im sure someone will come along shortly to answer this tho!

hahaha. Yeah, you could use a lot of broccoli/spinach added in. Also, if you are a vegetarian, definitely supplement with creatine.
