Off topic, maybe. If you’re talking about appropriate programming, it has more to do with recovery time than weight lifted. A 70 year old man squatting 200# may be considered an advanced lifter due to longer recovery times necessitating different programming.
Specifically, the labels I use are for trainees rather than lifting totals.
IMO this is the silliest part of this model. Your advancement can be strongely influenced by the amount you are eating.
So to compensate and remove that variable, these types of programs are always caveated by having you consume an inordinate amount of food. They are pretty explicit that it is expected that you do this to the detriment of any other goal.
But, question, when you reference “they” in this line
to whom are you referring?
Peaking for a meet is surely different than trying to maintain linear progression, or some other more advanced programming, right? If you weigh 205 and plan to compete at 198, you’re still programming to peak, but also not consuming in a caloric surplus, right?
I was actually so glad i found this thread (and a couple other on the topic) I had a choice between two feds to compete in my area, one of which was IPF, so I went with the other federation.
I haven’t competed in CPL yet, but it looks legit from what I can see. Look up EPC too, they are another IPL affiliate in Canada. I don’t understand how it works, but EPC is running CPL Nationals this year, in a couple weeks here in Ottawa actually. It looks like a solid fed. In case you didn’t know, USPA is the American IPL affiliate. That’s probably the only fed that has meets with significant cash prizes and is strictly judged as well, although they don’t seem to be making fucked up calls left and right like the IPF.
Ya, actually EPC were the meets I was looking at competing in. I see that most of their meets are CPL events as well which is cool (other than some of their charity events).
I think that meet (Dec 10) is just the EPC Finals but they are scheduled to host the CPL Nationals next year (2018) if I remember correctly?
Being from Ottawa, have you lifted at the new “613 Lift” gym yet? Looks pretty sexy.
You’re right, sort of, the EPC finals is actually also the CPL Eastern Canadian championship. They have nothing else on the canlendar, but last I checked no fed had anything coming up around here as of yet except for a push pull meet that doesn’t really interest me.
I have never heard of this 613 gym, I should look into it. I train in my basement, there is only one actual (sort of ) powerlifting gym that is open to the public, Hostyle, and I haven’t been there yet. It sounds alright but it’s not better than my basement and I don’t have to put up with any bullshit down there.
I just looked at their facebook page, apparently WRPF is going to start running meets in Canada.
“This is the first federation in Canada to be offering CASH prizes to LIFTERS in all categories, from sub-junior to masters! December 2-3 there’s a meet in Quebec City with up to $10, 000 in cash prizes all thanks to Jean-Francois Caron, Canada’s seven time strongest man, who is running WRPF Canada!”
Ah, gotchaa. The websites for these different leagues don’t seem to make it abundantly clear to the powerlifting layman, such as myself.
I’ve considered the drive to Ottawa just to check it out! They are all over social media with Canada’s big lifters doing guest lifts and shoots there. Looks like a very solid spot to move weight.
That’s good news! I mean, I’m not too concerned with the paid aspect of lifting as I wouldn’t be competitive enough to tango for prizes but good to know more options are opening up.
I just checked out their site, the gym looks fucking awesome. Unfortunately I live on the other side of town and it’s about a 45 minute drive in good traffic, which is pretty rare these days. Jay Nera’s gym is in the same area, distance and lack of time is the reason why I never went there although you also have to hire him as a coach or pay for programming if you want to go there. I was considering training at Hostyle, but the only advantage I really see over my basement is a belt squat machine and I’m already rushing to get to work a lot of the time. I would have to stop taking showers after training.
If they pay me enough I would consider taking steroids.
The IPF fed I was competing in made me take an online course about drug use and bullshit, basically if you get selected you have to pull down your pants and underwear in front of another man and piss in a cup. Until then, the main thing keeping me from not using PEDs was health issues but that alone gives me second thoughts. I’m all for drug-free lifting but being forced to strip in front of another guy is not cool.
Tested feds usually just randomly select a few people for testing, as well as the top guys and those who appear to have made unreasonably fast progress between meets.
Well, if a guy is going to take PEDs and still be at a mediocre level among tested lifters does it really matter? If you cheat and still don’t win then you are only cheating yourself. I don’t really care who does what, I just want to do the best I can without risking my health and spending all my money.
There are plenty of guys in the IPF who are using, they are getting caught left and right. Mohamed Bouafia (former 120kg squat record holder) recently got caught after they retested a sample. I found out that Sergey Fedosienko (the undisputed champ of the 59kg class, raw and equipped) was previously suspended for failing a test. There’s not much you can do if you really don’t want to compete against steroid users. If I had a shot at winning $20,000+ then maybe I would do a cycle. The funny thing is that all the meets that offer a significant cash prize are untested, if you can make a living off PL then maybe it’s worth it.
