That’s a very thought provoking article. I’ve always believed that it’s how much you eat not what you eat. That if you ate 7000 cals of lettuce a day (if it were possible) you would gain weight and if you ate only 1000 cals a day of lard you would lose weight. But I am suprised that his cholesterol, tryglicerides and blood pressure all fell too just because he got lighter.
This leads me onto something I’ve often wondered. We know excess weight in the form of fat creates extra work for the heart, but does carrying extra weight in the form of muscle (even though it’s functional) stress your heart too? Can your heart tell the difference? or is it all just “weight” and an extra burden?
I personally think extra weight is basically extra weight when it comes to your internal organs, be it fat or muscle. You have got to push blood through your body, and if its bigger, that’s more pushing, more oxygen to deliver, more waste to get rid of, and more stress. Getting real big is not the best recipe for longevity.
This is correct, or so says my wife with the two degress in the field of biology.
It’s crazy that guy’s cholesterol and triglycerides improved on the junk food diet. I’m not sure about the extra fat vs muscle weight thing. Just that building muscle requires training which has positive effects on all systems while getting fat doesn’t. And having fat around the belly area raises blood pressure which places more demand on the heart and vascular system.
MJ,I’ve benched 415x1 and 405x2 ‘touch and press’ in my basement and 405 at 2 meets.
Our bodies are machines. If we eat more calories than we burn, we gain weight. The source of the calories doesn’t seem to matter. Now I find the whole discussion of raising resting metabolism really interesting. And doesn’t muscle tissue burn more calories than fat tissue in a state of rest? Or did I just make that up 'cause it sounds good?

No thats true, bodyfat percentage greatly effects RMR.

Congrats, you are really showing some really solid numbers and supports there.

Thanks Jack and KP. Its a good feeling when things are moving in the right direction. I just need to stick to the plan and not jump all around like I usually do.
Well, if you read the figure athlete and the diet articles, there are different types of metabolisms. Having read Taubes Good Calories, Bad Calories and watched some of his presentations, for some of us, different things matter.
Brian, don’ be a hater. Can’t we all just get along?
Scott, I been doing chins every upper body workout for months now so the reps are starting to come. Maybe if I wasn’t so fat it wouldn’t have taken months to do 15.
KP,Joe,Steve, thanks for the input about diet and metabolism.

Finally made farmers walk toy today. I made it out of 6x6 RR ties connected by 2x6s. The 2x6s act like shelves to put cement blocks on. Carried it around for a bit. I like it.
