BBB:Big, Bald and Beautiful

MJ,your memory is just foggy because you’re so old. I bet you were quite the stud at one time. You were a marine for goodness sakes.

Skip, board pressing 385 for reps after a lay off is making it look easy. And you still have your hair. Stud.[/quote]

I do still have my hair, but it is thinning on the crown. I sunburned my scalp while at the beach. It peeled more than any other part.

8/2
1.squat 335x5,390x5,440x10,415x5,5,5 (65%,75%,85%,80%)
2.ab rolls 3 sets
3.zercher squat 135x5,225x5,315x3
4a.sldl 225x10
4b.calf raise set

I had a lot of plans for today but squatting 440x10 wrecked me. I should have stopped at 7. I had nothing left for the rest of the workout and had to stop early.

Question for 5/3/1 people or anyone who cares:Is it better to kill yourself on the money set or save something for the rest of the workout?

When my low back aches during a squat or deadlift workout a few sets of ab rolls really calms back down.

440x10 should have killed you!

By the book: leave 1 or 2 or more in the tank on the money set. I’m better at that on deads and squats than I am on bench and MP but I still wimp out fairly often on the assistance work for deads and squats but almost never on bench and MP - go figure…

jim says to pick your battles. I like to go all out on the money set every now and again, to see what kind of damage I can do. when you do that, the accessory lifts for the day are no longer important.

You probably shouldn’t do this more often than 1 or 2 times per month on each lift. I do it less than once per month per lift.

when you’re feelin’ it, you gots to hit it

I go almost all out on the money set. I try to get as many reps as I can leaving one really ugly final rep undone. I try to not fail on a rep ever but it does happen.

This is one of the reasons I’ve never done 5/3/1. I don’t think I would have good enough sense to know when to stop and would end up throwing my form and, thus, probably throwing out my back, which has happened before. I do think this would be a great program to use for rehab, though, since the gains are slow and sustainable.

Back to thumbless grips, I wonder if it has something to do with the size of one’s hands. I have tiny hands and would probably drop the bar with a thumbless grip. But I must admit that I’ve never tried it.

Very impressive chins. Especially if they’re full chins. Chins used to be my thing, probably 'cause I don’t weigh much.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sometimes I’m just stupid and ruin a perfectly good workout.

KP,women have more sense then men so I’m sure you’d do fine with 5/3/1.

For what it’s worth, whenever doing 5/3/1, or any workout where I keep increasing weight to a “climax” set, I push it all the way. I make every effort not to try a rep that I am pretty sure will not go up, but I have crossed that line a time or two. (Usually only on the week before a deload)

That set normally wipes me out, and the accessory work is not as intense. But, hey, it is accessory work. I am still able to push it. I just don’t have the mental edge to drive it like the main exercise.

Kpsnap - hand size could be an issue. I use thumbless (suicide) grip on bench, military, squats, deads, laterals and reverse flyes. On bench and MP. the bar actually sits on the inner edge/behind the pad of my thumb. So I have a built in bar stop. If your hands are small enough that you can’t get that, I would think it a very unstable grip.
It does feel more natural and like I am in a stronger position.

Thanks Skip.

5 big hill sprints
5 small hill sprints

Getting better all the time. Felt good today.

looking studly.

hill sprints and 440x10

nice work…

My take on 5.3.1 going all out on the money set while fun
left me lacking in recovery
squats over 5 yes
pulls over 5 no

Thanks Kev. My body doesn’t feel studly today.

Damn…sprint work? a tip of hat to ya! But you really should do 6/4/2 (haha)

I know the feeling. Mine have been forced all week. That’s what I get for breaking my rhythm.

Still, great workout, Steve. Lots of good work in there.

They do stuff like that at our hospital, from time to time. Yesterday was one of our managers B-day. No less than 3 cakes showed up in the breakroom. I think the hospitals longterm plan for solvency is to make sure everyone to ever work there ends up with diabetes or heart disease.

Thats a nice CGB brother…I wish my numbers were like that…note to self…must work harder.

So what did your boy think of lacrosse this past season?

I think we should sell cigarettes in the gift shop. Job security.

Thanks OG.

My oldest wants to play again next year but my youngest want to go back to baseball. But overall a good experience and a cool sport. My youngest had a coaches that would watch the game and forget to switch kids in and out. So some games he would play almost the entire game and other not play hardly at all. Good guys but just forgetfull. Those games he didn’t play really pissed him off (me too).
