Battletoads on NES is the Hardest Game of All Time

The difficulty of beating the older games is what makes them so damn good, in my opinion. You actually have to be good at it since it doesn’t tolerate sucking.

Battletoads was fuckin impossible. I remember me and my cousin used to play that for hours after school at my grandmothers house and we never beat the game. Now i wanna play it haha

EDIT: LOL i just watched some youtube videos of the game and we never got past the third level hahaha

This, and the original TMNT was difficult as well

It was not too bad until it got to the vehicle stage which I don’t think I’ve beat. Not that I have tried for ages either.

Battle of Olympus, mentioned earlier, was kind of ridiculous too. Had it when I was far too young to figure it out.

Mortal Kombat 3 on hard level, after the first opponent or so…All I can say is I’ve played those games more than is healthy and I never learned to block attacks, use the run option for anything or strike a combo against an opponent that was not incapacitated. The skill it takes to beat any opponent, the first time anyway (as I think the difficulty goes down once you die once) is quite high. Ironically, the end bosses are probably the easiest to figure out.

Interestingly, Double Dragon 3 is actually moderately easy for me. I have to really concentrate but I can definitely beat it. I would think the first game is the hardest, followed by three and then two.

I agree with everything everyone has said in this thread but this rings the most true to me

I could NOT figure out the original TMNT … that game was a clusterfuck. If I had known that word when I played that game, when my parents asked me why I didn’t like it, I would’ve said, “Because it’s a clusterfuck.”

The only reason I played contra was because I knew the code; but battletoads was my shit! It took me a few hours to beat that one level where you had to hurdle over the fuckin’ walls on the bike. I loved that game tho

Contra - perhaps
Zelda 2 - yep it was -surprisingly- hard, but on this list…?
Castlevania - doesn’t belong on this list!
DMC - dunno, never played
Shinobi - what a fantastic game, the difficulty is monstrous, but that’s just great.
Ikaruga - doesn’t belong on this list!
FZero Gamecube - dunno, never played

Ninja Gaiden - now we’re talking, very hard game!
G&G - the series? nope, some are difficult but very approachable.
Battletaods harder then Gaiden ? Complete and utter BS. If only for the reason that Ninja Gaiden had a HUUUUGE collection of leves compared to Battletoads. And Battletoads was very structured and rewarding, de facto teaching the player how to beat each obstacle.

But what do these guys know? They made so many mistakes in the video (pretty standard for japanese games to change difficulties for other versions, Ikaruga got popular in the west for it’s Dreamcast version etc) so I don’t think they have a clue.

Without establishing some rules, this list makes no sense because literally hundreds of arcade games are all so much harder then the aforementioned games. Without being buggy, they were literally made to make you pay.
So imo, they should say: this time- period or on this system.

Battletoads? I whipped that games ass. Try Amagon for a really hard game. Seriously I wouldn’t have put battletoads in MY top 10 hardest. All it was was pretty much memorization and timing.

My guess would be Arthur Jones.

Terminator for Genesis

The original “Shadow of the Beast”, Sega Genesis version, North American port. Completely impossible to mortals. The game was insanely difficult before the port, but when they brought it to America with the higher refresh rate (60hz instead of 50hz), it still ran through the same number of frames making it faster.

Recommended for masochists and chronic procrastinators only.

I beat Battletoads fairly easily, but I also threw my controller at my neighbor, hitting him in the face 'cause he was talking shit to me when I was having trouble with one of the levels. Got grounded for a week.

The hardest game of all time is Comix Zone.

As a kid I never finished Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari.

Maybe I was just good at Contra, but I never thought it was that difficult to beat without the 30 lives. I absolutely agree with Battletoads and TMNT, though.

If I remember correctly, the instruction manual basically had a complete walk through. But if you didn’t read the book, the game was damn near impossible to figure out.

Remember Terminator vs Robocop? Man they need to remake that game.

Basically pick any Ninja Gaiden game.

check out the series “until we win” at www.lordkat.com all he does is beat super hard retro games. he beat battletoads, ninja gaiden, TMNT, etc.

TMNT was a cluster fuck of a game, but it still was fun.

Milon’s Secret Castle was one weird fuckn game, I had no idea wtf was going on.

Do any of y’all remember Bayou Billy? It was an NES game. I don’t remember what it was about 'cause I could never get out of the first level. There was a black and white Mickey Mouse game for the NES that was the same way. Thinking back some of those old NES games were hard as fuck.

EDIT: Just googled ‘Bayou Billy’ and found this review-

There are two types of insanely first hard games. The first are the quality type where you actually WANT to finish the game because of how good it is, difficulty be damned. Battletoads, Revenge of Shinobi, Castlevania: Symphony of Night, Contra, etc all fall into this category.

The second type are the extremely difficulty and extremely crappy games. You’re constantly being knocked off ledges into bottomless pits, being pestered by the same enemy with different colours, and in general ready to smear your feces all over the cartridge and send it back to the manufacturer via FedEx.

If any of you haven’t checked out “The Angry Nintendo Nerd” on youtube…do it! The guy is hilarious and voices his frustrations over many of the crappy games we grew up with.

And my own addition…LAST BATTLE from the Sega Genesis. What a steaming pile of crap! The levels look easy but there’s 100’s of them, with only 3 lives!
