Bartl vs. Sayjin: A Fat Loss Challenge

So boys…how goes it? How’s training coming along? What are you doing? What are you lifting? What are you running/walking/biking/swimming/etc? How are you feeling?

It seems your faithful readers are providing more entertainment value than the two of you. Come on now. Entertain me! Give me some meat!

Are you not entertained?!

Well, since you asked so nicely.

I just got out of class and am about to go perform the following workout:

  1. Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift to Snatch to Lunge - 3x15 w/60sec rest between sets

2A) Pushups (legs elevated) - 15 reps

30sec rest

2B) Bent over row + back extension hybrid - 15 reps

30 sec rest

2c) Lunge shoulder press combo - 15 reps

30 sec rest then repeat 2A-2C 2x

  1. 20 sec of squat jumps, 20 sec of squats, 20sec of static squat hold

rest 45sec then repeat

  1. Tabata Bike Sprints: 20s hard/10sec soft (repeat 8x)

5min easy ride, then repeat above.

I’ll be back as soon as I finish the workout to give you some feedback.

Because I just can’t pass such an opportunity up in real life, let alone the internet…

Thats what she said.

With that out of the way, I’m off to the gym.

Well lets see, since I lift on Tue/Th/Sat, and today is only Thurs and my session is still coming, you are going to have to simmer down.

As for yesterday, my knee was effing killing me and I didn’t make it more than two blocks running. So I walked.

I go to the doctor on tuesday.

Oh Sayjin… I was expecting something like that out of Bartl’s mouth, but hey, whatever works. Thanks for making me giggle at work.

I hope all goes well, man. Are you getting an MRI or just going to get it evaluated?

I try to do what I can do when I can do it.

Workout Progress Report

  1. 3x15 (2x20lb dumbbells)

2A) 3x15 (elevated bodyweight pushups)

  • No jackknifes because they hurt me knee

2B) 1x15, 1x10, 1x10 (Bar+15bs on each side)

2C) 1x10, 1x10, 1x10 (20lb dumbbells)

  1. Didn’t happen because my knee couldnt take any of the exercises

  2. 4min work, 5min rest, 4min work

I feel like such a vagina face. Apparently my lactic acid threshold is that of a 2 year old child because short rest periods + anywhere beyond 8 reps = failure for me.

I’m not talking the kind of muscular failure where I just give it because it hurts, but the kind where I strugle against the weight for a few seconds, making all sorts of stupid faces, then realize that its not going anywhere no matter how hard I try. I hope my threshhold will improve as I progress through these kinds of workouts.

As for the tabata bike sprints…wow. I had read all these articles about the tabata protocol and how they were hell on Earth, but I had no idea that these people weren’t exaggerating in the least. Here is a summary of my intervals:

  1. Started out going full gusto for 20sec; wasnt bad at all.

  2. Resumed the same space, hitting 90rpm with lvl 15 resistance and began to doubt the effectiveness of this protocol.

  3. Going much slower than before, but I power through it, thanking Jebus that I only have 5 more intervals to go before rest time.

  4. I close my eyes and give it my all, opening them expecting to see that I had completed my 20 sec, but much to my chagrin I had only completed 7 seconds.

  5. My heart is beating like a 15 year old kid watching Cinemax after midnight and I begin to question my feeble existance.

6-End of workout) No words, just pain.

I walked (if you can call it that) out of that gym feeling like I had just been let out of prison: my ass hurt, my hamstrings were fried, and my quads felt like that had blown up a few inches.

Chris, what’s your nickname?

Sayjin’s nickname is Rage, so I call him Ragin Sayjin (with approval from his committee).

Do you have something cool? And no, your last name (although cool) does not qualify for your nickname.

Dude, for 30 years my nickname hasn’t changed and it will never change.

Bartl

Thats it.[/quote]

Fair enough.

Alright Chris, Sayjin and I discussed in his old thread things that taste “open butt”, or something that you can’t stand the taste of.

What is one food that you don’t like or can’t stand the taste, sight, or smell of it? We were thinking the loser of the challenge has to eat a huge portion of it and record it, or something like that.

Sorry to hear about the knee, hope the trip to the doctor goes well and your knee gets better soon.

Just an eval.

Hell no.

Next suggestion

Training in a gym when its 97 degree’s completely sucks ass.

Being stuck in an office, in a suit completely sucks ass.

Doing a full training session outside when it’s 92 degrees outside completely RULES!

I love training outside.

Here is my Total Body Destructo Session for today:

RSL - all with DB
Romanian Dead Lift
Split Snatch
Lunge

FMDH - all with barbell
Front Squat
Military Press
Deadlift
Hang Clean

RSL x 12
rest 1 min
FMDH x 12
rest 1 min
RSL x 10
rest 2 min
FMDH x 10
rest 2 min
RSL x 8
rest 2 min
FMDH x 8
rest 2 min
RSL x 8
rest 1 min
FMDH x 8

My forearms were toast after this. Like I made the mistake of trying to shave my head but was nervous because I couldn’t hold on to the damn razor. When I did get to shaving, my hand was shaking so bad if freaked me out.

For weights on the DB I went with 30 lbs and for the barbell I went with 90.

These past two sessions were killers. Sweat was beading off my body like I just got out of the ocean. My CNS has been destroyed this week and trust me, Saturday is going to be hell on earth.

Now, I get to try and sleep. Even though its after 9 pm and its still over 80 degrees outside.

Fek

Chris,
In your physique clinic there was much talk of rabbit chasing and here you are trying to lose fat, win a deadlift contest, get fit for a triathlon and rehabilitate an injured knee…

Thursday’s Meals

2 HRX

Meal 1 - 4 eggs, 1 scoop Grow!, 5g fish oil, broccoli

Meal 2 - 5oz chicken breast, broccoli, 1oz almonds, 5g fish oil

Meal 3 - 5oz chicken breast, broccoli, 1oz almonds, 5g fish oil

Meal 4 - 2 scoop low carb Metabolic Drive, broccoli, 1oz almonds, 5g fish oil, 5oz chicken breast

2 HRX

your point?

I’m not focusing on training for a deadlift contest. Are we going to do one at the end of this? Ya, but guess what, deadlifting is not my focus.

I’m not rehabilitating anything because that would suggest something got broke and needs fixing, which right now is pure speculation because I haven’t been to the doctor and that comes on Tuesday.

What I am trying to do is lose fat. How do you lose fat? Lifting weights maybe? How about swimming? Go you go for a bike ride to burn some extra calories?

I see the point you are trying to make but I am not chasing two rabbits. The point of the article was for those people who are trying to do polar opposites of each other. By training to lose fat and get ready for my new race, I am killing the same rabbit with two guns.

lol - i like that answer!

Well played!

Come on Sayjin, we need some smack talk, you guys are to nice, this is war!!

Float like a butterfinger, stink like a bee!

dude, you need to quit mixing Spike and Jet Li movies. It hasn’t even been a week yet and you are talking war?

War would consist of two people hating each other and trying to kill the other. The only killing that will happen is on the final weigh in.

After Sayjin gets pecker slapped by me because I lost more than he did, we will still be buds. He will just have a big bruise on his face that is shaped like my dong and will think twice about challenging me to anything ever again.

HAHA!! I know, I know.

Have a good weekend both of you.
