Barbell Squat Straps/Harness

Greetings to the Nation. Some of you guys may remember, back in the early 90’s, a squat strap that was made of heavy nylon, with metal rings on each end that would attach to the ends of the bar. You would then straddle the barbell, then put the shoulder harness(with padding) over the shoulders. No spotters were needed, and it allowed for deep squatting. Well, I had one for a long time, and used the hell out of it 15 years ago. No longer have it, but would like to find or make something similar. Searched all over the web, but to no avail.

Suppose I could try to dupicate the design with nylon straps, rings, and some padding. Maybe on the cheap. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you have a possible business opportunity there…

Saw a how to make article.

Is this what you’re looking for?

Spud strap? They probably have made one.

Thanks for the input, but they do not have anything like it. I did find some tie-downs(adjustable) at Home Depot, with hooks. Two straps in a package, along with pipe insulation for shoulder padding. I bound the hooks together so they would not fall off the end of the bar. No spotters needed for squats(higher reps), since you lower all the way down and remove the straps from your shoulders. Cost? Less than 22 dollars. Can also be used for calf raises and shrugs. Just try that with spotting chains hung from rafters… you will get caught in the chains.

This is what a spud strap is = a belt sqaut.

I remember what your talking about and it put stress on your lower back-alot. Use the belt sqaut it is much safer and can be loaded real heavy for the legs with no detriment to the lower back or spine.

You can set up on 1 foot blocks under each foot for and extreme low sqauts you just need a bar or something to steady yourself when real low if poor balance is an issue.

But go with what you built if you are happy with it.
