This guy was smaller than me, but I’ve seen big guys doing partials at the top part of the press. I’ve also seen big guys and skinny guys doing quarter squats so it’s hard to judge an exercise on that criteria.
I’d say lower it to your clavicle but some cant do that comfortably
I do a pause on the chest. I also do them seated without back support if that makes a difference.
If you’re going strictly for hypertrophy I’d say placing the bar on your clavicles isn’t as good an alternative as bringing the bar down to chin level and pressing from there.
Just my opinion because more TUT= more hypertrophy (generally), and resting the bar on your clavicles takes the load off the delts to a degree.
It all has its place though

Yep, and its actually to a large degree. At that point ur shoulder are at best stabilizers, and your body is whats holding the weight. (which is a good thing when ur doing 1-3 reps and need to breath a little.)
I do standing overhead barbell press and take it down to my chest. I’ve never felt my shoulders get a better workout.
That guy at the gym wasnt doing a real military press, what he was doing was called a RETARD press, point your elbows as far out as possible like an overhead bench press.
Most importantly you need to get your head under the bar as it passes your face, keep the bar as close to the midline of the body as possible, and get your elbows in at the bottom, they will naturally move to the most efficient position as you continue your press overhead.
I would agree that you should do them to your chest unless you have an injury preventing you from full ROM. I am following Rippetoes SS right now and am loving doing the full ROM standing press.

Sorry man but how does that work, how can you keep your head under the bar if it’s got to go past your face.
Im confused???
OK head under the bar the second it passes your face. I hope you didnt hurt yourself trying to put the bar through your head.
Confusion is cleared, i was thinking you were speaking of the eccentric portion of the lif,t and it would be a never ending struggle as the bar is lowered and you keep your head under the bar but try to get it past your face at the same time.
Would be fairly funny to watch someone try to do this, lol
