stability balls are all about training the core. benching with dumbbells off a stablility ball looks nothing like a competition bench press, and wont do much in terms of building the bench. A bamboo bar lets you duplicate the exact setup on the bench that you would use in competition. Because you are using the exact same setup and form with a bamboo bar, you are strengthening the exact same stabilizer muscles used in your actual bench press. you dont get that luxury with the stability ball exercises. bamboo translates to powerlifting specific goals, stability balls don’t(not saying they are useless)
I was really just being funny (or trying, anyway). I’ve never even tried the kettlebell bench, let alone with bamboo, but I can see how it could have some merit. Anything that could teach you to stay tighter while benching could be very useful.
bamboo benching is all about activating your “sleeper” muscles, some guys have been benching for so long that as soon as they lay down on the bench and unrack the bar, muscle memory takes over and the muscles that are already the “dominant” continue to carry most of the workload, by using a unstable resistance all the muscles are fired because they are required to do more work just to stablize the load, (though i cant speak of the bosu ball or other unstable surfaces on this behave) with the bamboo benching you have a stable surface but have a unstable load, with the bosu ball and all that other stuff you dont have a stable surfae, which in my opinion should be a no no with heavy weights, but all in all the bamboo bench is a great pre hab excerise for shoulder and chest health,
btw theres nothing wrong with training with unstable surfaces, i think that should be done with moderate weights though, training on unstable surfaces is a great pre hab or re hab tool, ei porpriception
Well for the most part I didn’t hear too many idea’s on why I’d want to bamboo bench, especially when Hanley mentioned the bosu ball comment haha
BUT as for young n he makes a really good point about the sleeper muscles. But I wonder if the “sleeper” muscles get used when doing variations and other lifts…over head lifts, db presses, inclines, etc?
Maybe I’ll try it out with the PVC pipe and see what I think before making anymore comments lol

FWIW, there’s a bit of a difference. It’s not like we’re benching on a vibrating bench.
I think it was big iron who suggested hanging chains from the bar that are completely off the ground for ‘stability work’ or something. I also know Scott Cartwright does walked out squats with chains suspended off the floor sometimes.
I’ve often used a similar press, with ropes instead of bands to help with a shoulder problem i have. it added zero weight to my bench, but pain definitely decreased.
