Today was very scary. With less than a mile left to go, I rolled my foot. Badly. So badly that it trigged something very odd neurologically. I say that because I don’t think I was dangerously dehydrated; I had some salt before I left, I stopped at several water fountains for a drink as needed as I ran through the park, and I had an energy gel after 8.5 miles. Anyway, I felt nauseous and ended up on the brink of passing out. I was losing my vision and had to lay on the grass. Fortunately I was in the shade and in my neighborhood, and enough cars drive on that street. But at that moment no one was around to see me freaking out. Somehow I managed to come to, so I sat there for a few minutes before I walked slowly back home. I am very lucky that the incident took place so close to my apartment. After a little while, I ran a bit more but stopped after a hundred meters or so and decided to just give myself a break. Oof.
Thanks both! My ankle is very swollen, and I still feel kinda weird. I very much want to take a nap now but am afraid that my body will pull something weird and not wake me up.
Heat and pain together can do strange stuff. If you are swollen you must have pulled something and caused a pain reaction (dizzy, throwing up, passing out, shakes…) especially if you were not full of adrenaline.
Ugh, so frustrating. I almost passed out again at home, so my friend/colleague drove me to the ER because I was concerned about low oxygen levels. Especially because I live alone, and, well, yeah. According to the x-ray, nothing is fractured. It’s just an awful sprain. I was really short of breath until a couple hours ago, but I am okay now. Everyone there agreed that I likely reacted that way because of the pain. Although heat could have played a role, I was told that I looked okay and that they didn’t see a need to check my electrolytes.
My friend’s partner suggested that maybe I have a high pain tolerance and somehow managed to walk home on a fractured foot after the incident, but maybe this means I have a low pain tolerance in any case, it looks like no running for the time being. It’s a bummer. I will be able to lift this week at least but am not sure if I will have to do upper body only.
Sorry to hear about the incident, that sound scary! I agree with @donnerschweer in that it sounds like you experienced a pain reaction.
I wish you a speedy recovery!
Oh damn…watch out for rhabdo. Usually it’s checked using blood tests but if you develop bruising out of nowhere specially in your thighs or your pee turns brownish, go to the ED
They gave me a wrap that I’ve worn a little bit. Nothing super fancy
I was curious about that when I came home, but I didn’t notice any signs. Thanks for the concern though! Rhabdo is a terrifying condition from what I’ve read.
Sorry to hear about the sprain! They can be as bad as fractures for pain, I am amazed you were able to walk home. I would say with your lifting and running history, your pain tolerance is quite high. May it heal quickly.
It’s very seldom that I am the voice of reason around here, haha. But I would definitely try to figure out if you’ve torn ligaments before I would shrug it off (if they haven’t already ruled that out!).
I am quite well read up on clinical best practice guidelines for ankle sprains and while I shy away from giving medical advice on the forums (partly because of ethicacy, partly because I don’t have the capacity), it does make a difference in how you go from here.
I wouldn’t be surprised if I tore my ankle really badly because, well, the pain was excruciating. It is extremely swollen. But I’m not very interested in going back and paying more for an MRI, unless it doesn’t improve in the upcoming weeks.
No worries, I get it. I think there is a difference between helpful guidance and unfounded Internet diagnoses (or attempts thereof). Thanks for chiming in!
Don’t throw away the wrap early please (which I guess/ hope is kind of a brace - not a cast! And doesn’t have to be fancy). Also wait up the inflammation phase (5-10 days) and try to take load off in that phase.
A good physiotherapist might be able to tell if there is a tear in ligaments - although only after the acute swelling goes down.
I definitely won’t, and yeah, it’s a wrap with velcro. I managed to walk 10k steps today with my ankle wrapped, so I am faring well but being careful.
I believe that. It’s very swollen right now. We’ll see; I’m optimistic today. I more or less took the day off from work because I was a tad traumatized from yesterday’s fainting spells…
Squats were a no-go today, but at least I deadlifted a weight that should not have felt as heavy as it did. At lunchtime I went to my university’s gym to try indoor cycling; there are a couple of different bikes there. I used some Schwinn bike. Honestly, this was much more of a workout for my legs than my cardiovascular system, so I was a little disappointed. But it’s better than nothing, I guess. I didn’t realize that I was riding very uphill for the first three miles. I think I’ll try to do this a few times per week because I can’t run for a bit. Overall, I managed 15k steps today, and I didn’t wrap my ankle today. My coworker was astounded when I revealed the swelling though.
AM
Pull-ups 1,2,3,4,5,6,4,4 (pyramid until one set is missed + one more max effort set; 10s rest per repetition in the previous set)
Push-ups 4x10
Goblet squat 27kgx2x15
Kneeling ab wheel 25,20
PM
11-mile bike ride in a little under 39 mins.
The bike is exposing how weak my legs are. My ankle feels about 50% better than yesterday, which is a huge difference.
