Feels good to get back into things. Had an amazing trip that was worth losing a few days of scrambling to finish my thesis proposal . . . experienced one of the best shows of my life in the town that feels like home to me. I broke my step record on one of the days I spent there – 41k. Ouch. Also, it was nice to take a break from this website.

Training continues to not be the biggest priority for me right now. I plan to do Easy Strength four days per week and make a fifth day more of a free-for-all (maybe deadlifts or some dedicated conditioning day) because I feel like it. Will keep trying to lose a bit of bodyfat, but I am not in a race to do so. 2022 is a strong contender for the oddest year of my life so far, and I never expected lifting to take such a backseat. For now. I have soft plans to run a more intense program closer to the end of the year.

Hilly two-mile run 15:28 (horrendous as I try to reacclimate to the heat and humidity)

Shorts felt a little too loose while running, which is good considering my goals but also not A Look. Still eating higher carb and low fat. My body definitely prefers this yet for some reason I sometimes don’t listen to that. I’m also experimenting with eating low FODMAP and even trying to reintroduce oats, which I haven’t eaten in years.

At the track: jumps, 4x300m run (65s,60s,61s,62s), 800m cooldown

Late PM
So restless after sitting in front of my computer at home all day, so I went out for more running. Ran a moderately hard 1k (4:38) and 500m (2:07) that featured some unpleasant hills in my neighborhood. Between mental and physical fatigue, I think I’ll sleep well tonight.

Hell yea! I went to a concert (lucy dacus/the national) a few weeks back and mid-set I realized that going to shows was probably my single favorite activity, losing yourself in it all is fantastic.

I ate it pretty strictly for awhile, not all that intuitive, but it led to better gut health for me. I still avoid certain fodmaps because of the diet. What’re your current restrictions?

That’s such an awesome combination of artists. Still haven’t seen either of them live, unfortunately. Going to shows is one of the very few things that keeps me sane – a huge reason why peak COVID times devastated me. The culture of it all, connecting with the artists themselves and other fans… it’s everything.

My digestion turned weird earlier this year. Of course that could be for a variety of reasons, but slightly decreasing my vegetable consumption and loosely following low FODMAP have helped a lot. I’ve exerted the most effort in avoiding high FODMAP fruits (sad), garlic, onion, and some nuts.

Only real downside is my shirt expenditures have skyrocketed lol

The fruits part is so weird, my guess rate for which fruits were low in FODMAPs was effectively 50% lol

Luckily for me garlic and onion aren’t huge triggers, for me, but that made cooking much much harder, I tried ashwaganda (sp?) when going full-in on elimination but the flavor really didn’t do it for me.

This definitely helped my digestion

but…

happen to be some of my favourite foods, very hard, especially with so much good peaches and plums floating around this time of year

Luckily for me most artists I like produce apparel that does not appeal to me. I prefer stuff like wall decor, stickers, patches, hats, or, better yet, signed setlists from the show :joy: Though I will definitely spend extra money on a monthly basis to support artists (preferred method) or on VIP tickets that offer exclusive experiences.

Peaches don’t bother me too much, but I think apples have to go unfortunately. And ripe bananas.

Watermelon surprises me. Blackberries, however, do not. Never tolerated those well.

Bagsy, I have running questions for you.

Considering you think:

Is slow, I feel you are an excellent person to ask.

As you know from my log, I am running again after a 3 year hiatus, and longer before that. My best half marathon time ever was 1h55m on a course that decended 3000ft.

Questions are:
When would you add speed work after getting back into running?
What are some of your favorite speed workouts?

I do not expect to be as fast as you, I am carrying a lot more mass. But getting down to a 21 minute 5k would be fantastic for me. I never cracked 25 minutes even in high school XC.

Can i be cheeky and also tag in @simo74 here? He’s also a pretty experienced runner, before his triceps started weighing him down.

Not to make this all about me, but I will start by listing my running credentials because we care about that here when people ask for lifting advice and such.

My best 5K was in high school, last race of the cross country season when I was in eleventh grade. Around 21:30. I for better or for worse also ran my fastest mile in the same race – 6:20. Running was never my Main Thing during this time. I played soccer at a high level at the time, which irked my cross country coach. I was very average at running; I know some may insist I am being hard on myself, but those times really were average for a female cross country runner who sometimes ran for varsity and sometimes for JV.

Running then became my sole pursuit early in college after I decided to not play soccer in college and before lifting became my thing. I ran a few ten-milers and half-marathons, and my best time was ~1:39:30 if I recall correctly. I didn’t do many 5Ks because I did so many of them in cross country. I think I was slightly better as distance increased, but I also didn’t do any consistent strength training – didn’t touch a barbell until college – so who knows what I could have achieved in the 5K or shorter.

In both cases speed work was crucial for me. Controversial, but I think speed work is more important than the weekly long run ever was. That does not mean I think that tradition is bogus. I don’t agree with much of my cross country coach’s approach, but she generally peaked most of the runners well enough to PR at the end of the season. I recall doing hard track workouts at least once if not twice per week most of the time. They were painful but really worked. The workouts seemed random in the off-season, but during the season they started at longer distances and trickled down until the last one, which was something like 15–20x200m in a relay format. Everyone dreaded these days – yes, everyone. Even the slowest athletes would do speed work. We all shared the track. Sure, the varsity might do some extra reps, but these workouts were a large component of everyone’s misery training.

Immediately. I think to run fast you have to practice running fast. There’s no getting around that. Speed work offers the biggest bang-for-your-buck in my experience, especially if you’re not going to be dedicating your life to running (i.e., you also lift and have other adult responsibilities).

I think the worst workouts were mile repeats and many rounds of 400m. I don’t think we ever did any repeats longer than a mile or shorter than 200m. Think the total distance of each workout was around 4800m, maybe a little less? I thought it was a little overkill, but that was my coach for you. Nowadays I am happy with myself whenever I run high-quality 4x400m lol

Not with that attitude!

I have a feeling that I’m not as light as you or others may believe.

Just read this after adding something to Unicorns log and had to chuckle at the similarities and also the opposites in our responses.
