Back Squat Alternative

What would be the next best thing to the Back Squat?

I’m pretty short (5ft 6in) and the length of my arms makes the lift feel extremely awkward.

When I am standing the bar is at mid-glute and I have to almost push the bar backwards so that when I stand up my ass isn’t blocking the full range of motion. I guess I have short arms…

Can anyone recommend another lift that’s just as effective?

Are you serious? While you are standing for a squat your bar is at midglute!

Front Squat, Zercher Squat, Split squats, Good mornings.

Not necessarily in that order.

How could your ass possibly get in the way of a squat? I’ve also seen a man squat 315 while playing a guitar, so having short arms wouldn’t be a problem.

Maybe I’m not understanding your post correctly, but it sounds like you might be describing a Hack Squat (sorta like a deadlift behind the legs)? Is that correct?

I’m the same height, and I’m having a lot of trouble visualizing this. Are you talking about doing a hack squat where you hold the bar in your hands behind your back?

I think you mean Hack Squat. The bar is in your hands behind you, and hangs down as you squat. Either that, or you need some basic form instruction.

Like the poster above, front squats, zercher squats, REAL back squats, etc.

Put the bar across your shoulders.

Actually yes…I meant the hack squat. Sorry guys.

I only ask because I read on this forum that the hack squat is probably the best
squat out there but I guess I’ll have to stick with back squats and goodmornings.

Thanks all.

Hack squats rock for quads, but for overall development and power back squats are most bang for your buck.
