Back Injury, Recovered and Re-injured

Hello guys, good morning.I first had back injuries back in 2020,I have always been lifting moderately heavy, never a 1RM but intense hypertrophy style 8-10rep,4-5 different exercises each session.I was diagnosed with herniated disc on February 2022 and has recovered from it since March 2023,with different strategies and method.Last week while doing single arm row with bench support,I strained my back, and it was painful for the first four days and I felt a lot better on the fifth. This strain is painful but it’s not as bas as the herniated disc I had suffered.while in pain,I promised my wife that I will stop lifting for a year or two but I felt ā€œoffā€.I have been training for a long time and invested hours and effort into it,I really will miss it.

So given that I felt this injury though painful is less serious then the herniated disc I suffered for close to two years and I was able to recovered from it,should I believe in myself and not worry about injuries again as I know this time it’s because I did not warm up properly and also didn’t follow my routine properly and just get back to my workout or should I just do what I promised and not workout for a year or two?

I don’t think not working out for a year or two will ever be the right answer.

It actually sounds like you just got a minor strain if it’s feeling much better on the fifth day. With any real concern, I would always say to seek a professional’s help. However…

Even with great form, one-arm dumbbell rows can be hard on the back as it’s heavily required for stabilization. Not just that but there can be a tendency for people to twist a little in the wrong places which can cause problems for people even without any previous injury or back problems. My suggestion would be to find exercises that do not aggravate it. Chest-supported Dumbbell Rows would be an excellent choice as well as most Machine Rows. Cable rows may work for you if it’s just form/twisting issue. Ultimately just find things that you can consistently do pain-free and keep moving forward. Work with a professional physio if you need rehab done, or even a coach to make sure your exercise form is good.

i suffered disc herniation couple years ago. (dig up my posts don’t want to revive the whole thread). tldr; you need to keep working out. acute strains require some care, disc ā€˜herniations’ require continuous workouts. the harder i pushed the better it got and resolved eventually
