Call me a wussy, but I can never go all out on a mixed grip axle clean in fear of blowing out a bicep. I don’t have bodybuilder biceps and I usually not going over 303 on the axle. I weigh 226, and I’m around 5’9". Are there ways to clean efficiently without the usage of the bicep? Am I worried for nothing?
I see guys my size like Zack McCarley attacking an axle like the thing isn’t even loaded with weights. I’m giving everyone permission to troll me and slap sense into my prima donna self. Tips, and etc. appreciated.
I definitely think you are way over thinking it. I am 5’7" and 200lbs and am cleaning 270lbs fairly easy but I have to use Alt grip. There is absolutely no way I could do it with a double over grip. I have never felt even the slightest “bad” biceps pull from it. Although I do a slightly different style.
I take the bar over under grip and clean same as I would with power clean. I explode as fast as possible and I take my under hand off the bar while it is in mid air. So this may take some torque off my bicep but I personally think your just way over thinling it man.
Power curls? Sounds to me like it’s more of a mental thing, but throwing in some heavy power curls might make you a little more confident with the mixed grip when you do axle cleans.
I suppose I am overthinking it. I have cleaned 303 with double-overhand but since my grip is sub-par, there is no way in hell it’s efficient. Overthinking is the new verdict. I’ll just have to dig in a little deeper and suck it up.
