X, it’s not so much that the story isn’t original. It has more to do with the fact that the relationships between the characters weren’t as developed as they could have been. It doesn’t come close to a film such as Star Trek in regard to character development. And since this movie has been in development for over a decade, one would think the script would be strong enough to match the magnificent visual spectacle.

I will never understand people like you… I brought this up in that other thread about the 4 minute short with the robots… Why is it that every time people make FX driven movies people complain about character development as if every movie has to be a boring ass french drama… the movie had PLENTY of character development… you understood the motives, had empathy for the locals situation, learned about them, where given reasons for the guys disconnect with the other mercs, Michelle Rodrigez character (a pilot) even got character development and she barely had any screen time…

Am I the only one who goes to movies to be entertained? [/quote]

You’re making the assumption I was not entertained which is incorrect. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and will go see it again in the theater. I’m just taking a step back and comparing it to other movies which I happened to like a little more and what made the difference. And I didn’t say there was no character development. I said there was less than in Star Trek.

Fair enough…

I think what I enjoyed most about this movie was the fact 3D was finally used to help make each scene more engrossing rather then the hookie missle / random thing thrown at me…

Another reviewer I read compared this film to seeing terminator or jurassic park for the first time for giving you that “what if” moment, along with showing you for the first time what a technology (CGI, Motion capture, 3D) is capable of when used properly… I guess thats why I found this movie so great, a world that (if your a gamer) feels like a giant game that you really wish you could be a player in…

I still think the robot knife fight was over the top though…

Sigourney Weaver’s roll was great though…

I really liked that as well. Pixar’s “Up” in 3D had a simliar feel during the aerial scenes.

Spectacle amazing
Fight scenes amazing
3d : utterly spectacular

Plot: lame lame predictable
message: laugh out loud sanctimonious

Brilliant film but the bit SPOILER about energy flowing between living things SPOILER was just ridiculously funny. I was rooting for the colonel.

Ok you know what, if you didn’t like it, you can suck a dick.

I saw it in 2D tonight and loved it. If you think the message is shallow and sanctimonious, then I’m pretty sure you understood all of the shallowest layer of the film. If you saw nothing there about the community of religion, mercenary allegiance, as well as stabs at individualism and capitalism in general, then you basically went for the eye-candy. Fine with me, but all of you saying that it had “no plot” were busy checking out the pilot’s tits.

The effects were really, really fucking good. That’s about as far as my praise goes for the movie.

It had a good plot. The 3D graphics made it amazing.

I’m trying to take WolBarret’s advice and lighten up with regards to this movie, but I honestly felt uncomfortable watching it at some points. Blue people humping was hard to swallow… which is weird because midgets humping doesn’t bother me at all.

Take my advice, Mtyler. Relax your anus and let Avatar inside of you. You’ll have a good time.

Haha, I saw it tonight and that was definitely an awkward moment. That being said, I would totally bang that alien chick. The girl doing the voice over for that character, Zoe Saldana, just sounds so sexy.

Really, really cool movie. One of the very few movies that was pushing 3 hours and yet kept me entertained the entire time. If it didn’t cost me $15 I would see it again tomorrow haha

I wonder if they puposely made Jake a tactical and strategic moron to fit his grunt background. The shit he did is borderline retarded.

Navi: What do you we do when they send their landing party?
Jake: Since they are heavily armed and have poor mobility, we’re going to charge them with horses.
Navi: Let me get this straight, we’re going to charge directly at a heavily armored opponent. You do know it’s in a forest and we can use cover and rain down arrows on them.
Jake: No, we’re going to charge them with bows and arrows. We want to get as close as we can before we shoot them.
Navi: But we can shoot them from afar just fine. Alright, are we going to take advantage of our superior mobility and try to surrond them?
Jake: No, we’ll charge them from only the front.
Navi: Since we know when they are coming, maybe we should setup some traps.
Jake: No, we’re just going to charge them.
Nave: Alright, I give up. You’re the one riding the big red thing, I guess you know best.

Yeah, me neither.
Shit was long.

Was a great movie, much better than I thought it was going to be.

Oh and the female aliens have sexy bodies. I think I saw some nipples at one point.

Bought my tickets for Avatar in IMAX 3D for Wednesday at 9:30am. Had to go with the early morning one… where I am, nearly every other showing from now until near the new year is sold out already (!!).

Can’t wait. The storyline could revolve around an anthropomorphic eggplant with a stuttering problem for all I care…just want to see the SFX.

You know, if any of you fellas are into reading and liked the overall plot of the story but are looking for much more development that only a book can offer, I’d suggest looking into Amazonia by James Rollins. Kind of the same story, some legendary indian tribe living is living in the uncharted regions of the amazon forest and marines/mercs are looking for their land to find a cure for a disease and a shitstorm happens along the way, great book.

lmao!! yeah id have to say jake had some retard moments!

THIS WAS THE MOST BADASS MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!
it was like fern gully and Pocahontas grew up and had a baby!
the story line was great, character development was as decent as an action fx film can get, and OMG i dont ever want to watch a 2d movie again! that alien bitch was fine as fuck! i would have done that big blue cookie in human form! lol

This was not a humans vs. aliens film where the humans are the bad guys. it was deeper than that. it was more like life vs. corporate. as far as im concerned the blue people aka smurfs were just another race. not to mention if you think about it who saved the day??? a HUMAN! the colonel was cool, but he had to get got! to me it was the smurfs against the mercs. and corporate not the human race, just a bunch of murdering greedy dickheads.

Hey hey hey…if they don’t turn this into some conspiracy about “liberal” movies where they all shit on the military and hate America, what else do they have to bitch about?

That movie redefined the phrase, “getting some tail.”

Speaking of that:

SPOILER**

One of my friends was appalled by the Na’vi’ tail-apparatus and the whole “becoming one” with the flying animal-thingy. Said it was too close to simulating rape. Oh,yeah?
