I finally made it to the theater last night to see Avatar on 3D IMAX, and I was 100% blown away.
I thought the film did a great job of presenting contemporary society with a fairly simple story, that could in turn be applied to an extremely broad spectrum of issues and conflicts that affect the world in which we live.
From simply respecting our planet, to major events such as civil war, slavery, and cultural conflict, Avatar could be seen as a commentary on every single one. Cameron also did so in stunning fashion, bringing some of the best graphics, animation, and CGI that we have ever seen.
Personally, I left the movie with a burning desire to explore our planet, from a simple hike to pursuing my diving license, and was wondering if anybody had similar experiences and on which topics?
I just wanted to hear from the community and get a rolling thread going one of the bigger movies of our time. What issues currently facing contemporary/past society did this movie highlight for you? Do you think it was effective in drawing attention to these issues, do you think it could make an impact? What did you think of the general technology and overall presentation of the movie?
Also saw it IMAX 3D, hands down the single most amazing cinematic experience in my entire life. I can’t foresee anything ever topping it, and I mean every word.
Critics say the movie wasn’t any good. I agree with you West, the movie WAS good. I don’t know if it will go down as the greatest movie of all time or anything. I could be wrong, but I doubt it ; ) Of course the movie can be applied to many different situations regarding the past. From the Aztec’s, the Indian’s and even modern stories. The tie together because they have the same basic roots. Good vs. Evil. Just remember the view is one sided. Material things have always driven modern life, I hope that will change in my life time. I have to think positive! ; )
I watched it yesterday wiht a ‘haji copy’ (Am in Afghaninstan) So I did not get to see the 3D version.
It was still a visually stunning movie.
I dont get all the ‘hubub’ its getting.
Pope says to not watch it, as it shows people worshiping a tree…really? Ever hear of Native American?
I read that people were blogging that they watched it and were so depressed that their world was not like that in the movie and wanted to kill themselves…again, really?
It’s just a movie. A fairly good movie. Fun to watch. Movie spoiler
The storyline has been done: remember ‘The Last Samari’?
I liked it, but don’t see how people are going so ballistic over it…its just a movie…

John S. and I agree that this movie is left-wing propaganda
Politics aside, I thought this movie was a great medium through which people can view and understand issues that have been facing humanity forever, both positive and negative.
I feel like it tried to be political but failed. If you have any brains at all, you note that the humans in the film are Mercs. And it’s ‘fiction’ so the whole quip about “the humans killed their mother” isn’t actually real.

Ha ha ha… Nice way to celebrate that movie, don’t you think?
Yeah I saw it the other day and it was a pretty amazing movie. It’s nice to see something “fresh” and not some rehashed 80’s cartoon or 90’s comic being exploited just for the heck of it.
LOL at the word “propaganda” being thrown around like it is towards movies. To quote Inigo Montoya: “I don’t think that word means what you think it means.”
I am supposed to go see it this weekend. Unfortunately, the nearest IMAX is not playing it. The next best IMAX 3D location is about 1.5hrs or so. I don’t think it is worth it, so I will probably just see it in a regular theater- should still be good right, or should I make teh trip?

I like that quote. I think the people that focus on it being to political or to propaganda like are the ones who believe in that.
I think the movie should be seen first and foremost as entertainment, and it did a tremendous job on that level.
On a secondary level, I think it can shed light on elements and facets that face both individuals and the community, and help provoke thought and change on such topics. If it takes a far away fictional world to help people come to realizations and to move towards change, that is completely fine with me.

Make the trip.
Seriously. Didn’t see it in the regular cinema so I have no basis of comparison, but my girl and I [and everyone else in the theatre it seems] left completely blown away. It’s hands down the most visually impressive movie of all time. Nothing even comes close. We’ve vowed to see it again before it hits the shelves.
Saw it, loved it, message was great. Not to take anything away from the movie but I think District 9 did a better job of driving home a subtle political message than Avatar. I think society is kinda numb to the “Go Green or Die” message. It’s a great message just done to death.

Theatre in Houston has an IMAX expericence and and 3D version.
Anyone know if there is a difference?

Yes. IMAX utilizes multiple projectors on a dome shaped screen that utilizes your entire field of vision, it is a truly amazing visual experience. The IMAX showings are also in 3D, so you do not have to worry about missing out on that.
If you have the opportunity, I would 100% suggest seeing it in IMAX. The screen is 3 stories tall, and the sound system in IMAX theaters make regular screenings sound like a joke.

Yes, do the trip!
I was COMPLETELY blown away, and let me say: that is not an easy task when it comes to cinema.
Most people would probably call me an artsy guy, but I enjoy quite a large spectrum of genres.
And I can’t remember seeing an action film that was such a ecstatic fx-orgy.
Most of the Action movies you guys discuss here I find immensely boring. [Blade Runner would be my no1 SciFi or perhaps Brasil -if you’d consider it scifi]
Story is still OK, though. Contrary to what most people think, a good story doesn’t need a gazillion of twists and can be, in essence, very simplistic.
Amazing Film, comparable to Star Wars Ep4 (the old one!)
!!!
SPOILER:
The best scene for me was probably when he “experienced” hia Avatar body for the first time.
The audience could feel nearly the same drunken joy as the effects and the pacing, the music and the drama all increased simultaneously.
