Austin Texas Olympic Weightlifting

I’m new to Austin and I’m taking a class with Oleg Kechko this semester (as I’ve mentioned more than once here). Anyway, I just wanted to say to those in the area, I’m beyond happy to now be training with Oleg and his crew at OK Weightlifting on Austin’s Northside (I think it’s the Northside).

Oleg’s simply one of the nicest guys and best coaches I’ve ever met and I’m excited to say I’ll be training with him and his group. To anyone in the area, it would be fantastic for you to stop by. I’ve been looking for a good coach and have traveled as far as (it’s not that far, but still) Houston to meet with a good weightlifting coach (Tim Swords) and I’m happy to say I’ve got a great coach here in my new hometown.

If anyone cares to stop by, give me a shout and I’ll even leave a Spike shooter there for ya. Train Hard!

Daniel Martinez

I would love to bring my son by and possibly get some quality coaching. Is he strictly a strength coach, or does he coach other aspects of sport? Let me know where his gym is, I’ll check it out.

It’s at the intersection of 183 + Pond Springs Road.

Oleg and Tracy specialize in olympic weightlifting, primarily.

Olifting rules.

We use all of the olympic lifts regularly, it would be good to see if I’ve taught my son good form, he’s pretty dang strong, people have been telling us to enter him in powerlifting meets, they said he’d do very well. His school does not offer powerlifting so he’d have to enter as an independant. I will definitely stop by the gym, I’m in that area all the time.

Good to hear. I’ll try and get a phone number to you. Since it’s a training gym, they are only open when sessions are running. To my knowledge, most days at 11AM-1 or 2 and 4-4:30PM to 6-6:30PM. It changes so I’ll get a phone number for you to call and get it to you (probably via PM).

It’s nice to hear that you’ve had your son training the OL’s. Technically very difficult but very rewarding to strength and power. Train Hard!

Outside the gym.

Inside training.

Simple set-up.

I’ll see about posting some of the training videos I shot, but I’ll have to get everyone’s permission first.

Looks good!

Koing

How many reps do you need to do with the bike before hitting the recliner?

We’ve been planning on going in but between track and baseball practice my sons schedule has been pretty full, he’s at baseball practice as I write this or we would have come today.

Yeah I know who you are now :stuck_out_tongue:

Everything is great. C&J 135Kg today, David W is lifting better and doing more volume.

Simple, but beautiful, set-up.

Bars, bumpers, platforms, squat racks, and blocks - just what a real O-lifting facility should have.

Looks great.

Those of you who can train there, count your blessings!

Awesome with the 135 kilos. I’m learning russian technique now (since my coach is from Belarus) so it’s taking some adjustment time, but other than that I’m training hard and will post vids when I can. I’m not posting vids at youtube because I’m focusing on the cues from my coach and not so much what I see (since I have beginner eyes).

I want to start training O-lifts soon.

I can’t do front squats without my heels coming up off the ground (when working out I’ll do them with small weights underneath my heels).

How best would you recommend developing flexibility in my calves, and is this needed to do serious Olympic lifting?

Otherwise… I mean, I go to UT. I’ve thought about Oleg’s school before. I might as well give it a shot.

Good thread.

Hey O-tep. Definitely stop by, it will be well worth it. Oleg and Tracy are great.

As for the ankle mobility issue, Coach Michael Boyle has a technique (that he picked up from one of the therapists at Athletes’ Performance; it’s also in his book ‘Designing Strength Training Programs and Facilities’) called ankle-self mobilization. To my volleyball players, I call it a shin pull. You basically stretch the calf and contract the shin simultaneously creating an active stretch. Not magic, but it works. He’s got some video on his site that does a good job demonstrating the technique. His website is www.michaelboyle.biz .

Stop by and I’ll bring ya a Spike. Lift strong!

Sorry for the Broken Vid, My battery died. Still awesome! Hope this works.
