Aug '21 Photo/Video Check-In

Here’s my current look as of this morning. Haven’t trained in about eight days due to the move, but looking to join a new gym in my new neighborhood next week.

Biggest goal between now and the end of the year is to improve my shoulder-to-waist ratio by taking 2-3 inches off my waist and adding 2-3 inches to my shoulder circumference. Adding some arm size is also a goal (ideally another 3/4" or so by end of year).

By the numbers:
Age: 54
Height: 5’ 5"
BW: 145.2 lbs
Shoulders: 47"
Chest: 37"
Waist: 33.25"
Thigh: 22"
Upper arm (flexed, no pump): 14"
Calf: 14"

Took one this morning:

happy with it. Haven’t weighed myself in a couple weeks. On cruise control with 5/3/1. Arms are bigger, maybe not in the photo though.

Quick blurb. I think I came in 4th out of about 20. The 3 guys that beat me all had to cut significant weight to make 231, I weighed in at 191 (lightest in the class). Statically I was still probably the second strongest (behind the guy that won almost every event). A little upset with myself I didn’t podium though. I still had a shot going into stone to shoulder, but I lost focus and literally threw the stone over my shoulder twice. Ironically I’d probably have done better with heavier events.

Excuses aside. I think this is my thing now. I can do some damage in 175 open. And in 18 months I could even do masters. Tons of fun. Made some friends. I hate to admit it’s better than powerlifting. Well, I’m going to go sleep till Monday and I’ll give and event run down later.

Sounds like a blast man! The guys on here who compete in strong man comps (you included) throw around some serious weight. Does anyone ever start fat and weak??

I don’t mean to disparage fellow competitors, but that’s what the majority of local dudes are gonna be. No shame in that either: this is a hobby and we all do it to have a blast.

I’ve seen more than a few “hate I didn’t podium” and their journal is filled with “the 200kg log felt good for the first 14 reps, might have had more” :joy:. Seems everyone is a static monster before ever getting started

Well now you are talking 2 different things. The dudes that podium are typically pretty jacked, but there are denominators dude. I came in 4th of 9 in my first comp, so there were 5 people below me all in various states of physical ability, and that was the open class.

I feel like there needs to be more structure around what the novice class actually is. I’ve heard everything from “you compete novice once and then should go open no matter what” to “you compete novice until you win a show.” I was at a local show where a guy competing lightweight novice hit 605 in a squat for max event. That seemed a stretch of the definition of novice to me.

At the end of the day, it’s a hobby and it is what it is. Novice class should just exist for people who want to get experience and think they might just zero the open weights. If you are putting serious effort into winning a novice class, something has gone wrong.

Technically it was the last day of July, put still, here’s a pic from my first real strongman comp last weekend:

Finally took a new pic.
Dexa scan BF circa 20% a few months back. Suspect it hasn’t changed too much (similar BW at that time)

Now:
BW 70kg (154lb)
164cm

Dropped down to 66-67kg during my first ‘proper of sorts’ cut earlier this year, with an increased cardio in that training block. Hoping the extra 3kg back on since is mostly muscle… time will tell.

Currently working through a strength training block, increasing sets and weights whilst dropping reps (more info in my log).

This isn’t actually from August, but I snapped this in the last week of July after a bench workout:

@DoubleDuce - do you have a log or a full comp right up? Id love to read it.

@wanna_be - I was fat and weak in 2019. Now I m fatter and not so weak.
But if you’re looking on competing jump in. In the one comp I’ve done 1 guy lost all of the events. But he got cheered on just the same. Its a great laugh

Not really sure how appropriate this is for the thread, but everything was pretty much a PR, so I’m thinking it counts here. Below is a little more in depth write up.

Didn’t sleep much, so I headed out early. Weighed in at 191 after a big breakfast. I brought food, but didn’t eat too much the rest of the day.

Last man standing log, 170 start with 10 pounds jumps:

Warm up felt awful, but the 10 pound jumps worked out really well to get me feeling good before the heavy weights. I hit 170, 180, 190, 200, 210, 220, 230 (PR from the floor), and 240. 2 other guys hit 240. First to take 250, cleaned and pressed it pretty easy, but lost balance at lockout, chased it forward and dumped in backward so I didn’t drop in on the judges (our judge literally told us not to throw it at him before the event started LOL). Cleaned the 250 again, but dropped it starting to black out. 1 of the other guys hit the 250 and I tied for 2nd. Agonizingly close on the lift, but point wise it probably didn’t make a big difference. The guy that hit the 250 was good for more. It’s also worth noting that the last couple lifts were on very little rest as people had dropped out. It wasn’t something I’d thought about or prepared for.

Husafel stone, 260 max distance, no time limit:

Not a whole lot to say. This is the one event I hadn’t fully done in training. Picked it with my grip too high, foot speed was too slow. Finished 7th. Not having done it before, this event wore out my legs far more than I realized it would.

Car deadlift max reps in 60 seconds:

This was too light. We had up and down commands and I was a little too strict in my top and bottom pauses compared to others. Hit 20 reps and tied for 3rd. Was still pulling reps till the end, just limited by cardio.

Farmers 195 a hand for 60ft:

I was 3rd place overall at this point. This was light and short so it was just a sprint race. I literally couldn’t walk any faster than I did and went 8.6 seconds. I was only 1 second behind 1st place, and I got 8th. This dropped me to 4th.

Atlas stone to should, 210 max reps in 60 seconds:

I did 3 reps in about 20 seconds, lost focus, threw the 4 rep over my shoulder and had to chase it across the floor and roll it back to the platform. Next rep I tried to go slower and got it stuck just below my shoulder and couldn’t roll it up before time expired. The guy who was in 5th and way behind me got 5 reps and because of all the ties ended up beating me by half a point. Finished 5th overall.

A little disappointed I let the comp get away from me in the last couple of events, but I’ve already been online looking up other comps in the area. I also very clearly know what I need to work on. Overhead stability, foot speed, and comfort with stones are training priority 1. Plus I’m going to cut to 175 open so I can be one of the biggest guys instead of the smallest, and compete with heavier events. It was a long fun day and made some friends (several in my area). It’s hard for me because I prefer training early, but if I want to be good at this I’m going to have to hook up with a crew and learn the events better.

I also wanted to mention that I’ve never felt as physically destroyed as I did the day after. I woke up wide awake at 2 AM and was finally hungry for the first time. I ate, but I was too exhausted to sleep. Just in a total fog the whole day, with muscles I didn’t know I had sore and stiff. Like talking took conscious effort mentally exhausted. Took my sun to the splash pad in the middle of the day to try and reset my internal clock, get some sun and move around some, but that was about all I managed to do. Got a solid sleep last night though and feel good enough today I plan on doing a little lifting this afternoon.

10/10, would highly recommend.

(No video on the last 2 events because my family had to go home and no video of the 240 log)

Yes, I started a static monster, after 22 year of training…

FTR I was as weak as guys can be when I started lifting. While this was my first strongman comp, I’ve competed at both powerlifting and highland games (you’d get a strong man comp if you averaged together powerlifting and highland games) so I wasn’t exactly at ground zero, even for strongman. Also, as encouragement if you aren’t that statically strong, I got beat by 3 guys that weren’t as statically strong as me because they were better at the sport and better at moving.

I meant no disrespect, I know you have countless years and tons of blood sweat and tears in the gym. I meant it seems most people on here go to their first comp already strong, not that you just magically walked into the gym and was strong.

When you get dialed in you’re gonna be a monster. No doubt.

Right, but I’d be a better strongman now if I’d started strongman earlier in my training when I was weaker. While I’m pretty strong I literally hadn’t touched any of the event equipment (other than farmers a couple of times) until about 10 weeks out and even then I haven’t trained with anyone to coach me up to this point. I’d have been better off weaker with better technique.

Also worth noting I’d originally planned to do 175 open. I moved to novice to eliminate the stress of cutting on a first comp. And I’m not going to lie, the open 200 class weights I was worried about zeroing a couple events.

Going in I didn’t really know what to expect with placings (or really care), but was disappointed not really because I placed 5th, but because I was doing really well and was close to placing when I mentally fell down at the end. It’s a weird sport to deal with because I know what I did wrong and what want to fix on those specific events, BUT I might never do exactly any of those events again. So I kinda feel like I don’t get the chance to redeem myself. I’m just competitive and didn’t feel like I did my best. I’m being too hard on myself more than anything else. I could have won it and I’d still be kicking myself for what I did on the Atlas stone (I’ll probably be doing the event in the gym over the next couple weeks until I do what I know I should be able to do).
