Great pressing for you and your daughter. I once eeked out 275 for three overhead but that was a while ago. Strong work here.

I’m pretty sure she needs you to teach her. With truly good form/technique, she has another 10-15# in her.
I am just trying to keep it fun and let her run with it.[/quote]
I’m sure she has a lot more in her since she’s just a beginner. I fear I would not be the one to teach her to bench. I am worse than the average gym-going mom. Seriously. And I’ve had a lot of help. Just no talent in this upper body.
So glad school is going well for her!
Nice Family PR’s. Your both making solid and steady progress. I can get 270 MP but it takes me two reps to total that.
Thanks Steve, GV. Just trying to get the MP back up there.
Lexie is coming along wonderfully. Now, if I can just get her to be consistent with going!
Karen, school is really going well. Right now she has 5 A’s and 1 B. Yes, I gave her grief about the B, but only after praising her for the A’s.
I still think she could benefit from your experience. And as far as bench issues, I have them as well. Hopefully that will be remedied soon…see next post.
Thanks Dave. Heck, I wish I could bench within 50# of your max…and I outweigh you by 85# or so!
Military Day - Heavy
For those who have been paying attention (No, there is no test.), this is normally a rep day. I decided to move my Heavy MP day to Wednesdays. I am not sure how that is going to play out. Since I have to go out of town in a few weeks, though, and will likely miss a Saturday workout, I would rather miss the rep day.
Also, I talked to a gent in the gym today who used to compete in powerlifting. I explained to him my bench woes and he said he would be happy to look at my form/technique, next time I am benching and he is there. I don’t really expect him to spend time coaching me at length. Mainly, I just need a set of experienced eyes that might be able to see the issue and a form tweak to correct it. Fingers crossed…

I realized that my balls haven’t grown back since I stopped lifting 20 months ago. By that I mean, I have no fire. I am not an analytical lifter. I am an emotional lifter. Anyone who has seen my videos can see that. I have a hard time lifting with the same intensity at the Y, though. It would feel very strange to do all the loud breathing and grunting/growling that I did in my home gym.
That said, 240# was heavier than it should have been. On the 255#, I brought in a little more focus and grrr, like the old days. The reps went up without a hitch and much faster than the ones at 240#. I really need to find a happy medium between not creating a scene and lifting like my old self.

And yes, the absence of a Lexie workout update means she bailed on me.
Did my 1st weigh-in in a few weeks, this morning. Down 38.6#. That is .8# higher than my lowest. Given how I have been eating, I am very pleased with that. I am not sure that it isn’t muscle gain, instead of fat. My pants fit exactly the same, if not a tad looser.
I may try to eek down my calories just a bit. But am not going to engage in a concerted effort to lose weight for, at least, another month.
Unless, of course, the whim hits me.
Saturday’s motivation-less, Lexie-less workout
Lex ended up at the ER, last night. They think it is/was kidney stones. So, she didn’t workout today. She will, however, listen , when I tell her to drink more water.

Today is my little brother’s birthday. So, I will be heading over there in just a bit.
Football, football, football…
Oh, and my nephews team won, 44-12. Coach has been confronted over the 12 points surrendered.
Sorry to read Lexie may have kidney stones, that is very unpleasant. Hope she recovers quickly.Maybe the fire is still in your belly it just may need a little stoking. Perhaps you could channel some Metallica or Disturbed for very loud moments before lifting, it usually works for me.
Ouch, I hope Lexie recovers quickly, Skip… And I’m calling for an impeachment of the D coordinator … your CGBP hand placement is my wide grip , hahaha

Metallica and Disturbed FTW! Throw in some Five Finger Death Punch and I am ready to party!
I just need to get over myself, buckle down, amp up and not worry about the other gym dwellers.

Well, they only have 1 more game. So, no time for a replacement ![]()
This game is against a team that they have never beaten. My brother’s team is a 1-A feeder team, with 17 players. The school they are playing is a 4-A feeder team, for a private school that recruits and gives scholarships.
I am not sure why they even play them. Nevertheless, a victory would be huge!
Lexie is doing better. She is still sore and has pain come and go. I am hoping that she can get back in the gym next weekend. She is definitely drinking more water now.
At that hand placement, my hands are just a hair shy of brushing my sides when I bring the weight down.
Heck, index fingers on the rings is not “wide” for me. It is wide enough that my shoulders feel it on heavy sets…but not what people would consider an really wide grip.

Yesterday’s workout was draggy. I hadn’t slept enough the previous two nights and I had tightened my diet back down.
Accepting that I have not been eating protein, I started correcting that yesterday.
Yesterday I had about 250g of protein. So far today, I have had about 140g. I will break 200g before I go to bed.
We shall see…
Send out the bloodhounds Strick has gone AWOL again ! 5 days without an entry?
Not AWOL… Just busy and frustrated with Wednesday’s workout. In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t be. But you know me.
I got my MPs except for the heaviest set(s).

270x0 - Got it up to the weak spot and lost my balance. I took a short step back with my left foot, then my right, then my left again. All with the damned weight just above my head. It had drifted too far back and I didn’t have the gas left to get it back in path and finish the rep. It soured me for a couple of days.
Today’s very short workout.
I am changing up the MP rep day a bit. Well, and the heavy day too.

Hey great football season for the youngin’s…

I think the most I have ever staggered about with, overhead, was 290.
Funny thing is, I had complete control over the bar. It never seemed to come down at all. Just that I didn’t have any push left, once I got everything back under control.
The incline bench is interesting. It has been so long since I did it.
I had a hard time maintaining bar path, because it felt so awkward. I would hit low, then high, then right where I wanted to.
The other problem is the setup they have for it. It s an adjustable bench that can go from incline to decline, at various angles of each. In the incline position, the bar is only a few (3-4") above my forehead, when seated on the bench. There is no way to unrack it with your scaps retracted or arm even remotely tucked.
I had to get a lift-off at 225#, to even try to stay tucked.
It will get easier.
Back Day
Lexie finally went back to the gym today. But her momentum is broken and she is’t very inspired at all.

Heavy MP Day
Busy day. Got to work an hour early. Left work 1.5 hours early, to go to Lexie’s parent/teacher conferences. All her teachers seem to really like her…or are good liars. She has 6 A’s and a B+ (89). It is mid-term. So I am pushing for all A’s, which she has never done.
When I got to the gym, I hadn’t eaten in 5.5 hours. After walking around her school, rushing home to change, and getting to the gym, my blood sugar was a bit wonky. This happens when I have been eating sugar. And I have been a bad boy. Correcting that as of today.
I was shaky enough that I ate a granola bar in the middle of MP. It didn’t make me feel energized, but it did level me off.
Also, lowering the reps on heavy MP, as I am dealing with fatigue on my money set. I am making up for it by doing partial reps afterwards. I will call them lockouts. Basically, I am doing a full rep on the 1st and the next 2 are down to my forehead (weak spot) and then pressing back up.

My goal is to add 5#, on the top set, every two weeks. That might be a bit ambitious, but we are going to try it.
The way my shoulders and triceps feel this morning, the lockouts definitely did something differently. Hopefully good.
Lexie is smart. She struggles some with math. But her biggest problem has been a lack of effort and disinterest in school…which she comes by naturally.
She really likes the school that she is in now. She likes her teachers. And she seems to be putting in some actual effort.
Maybe there is hope.
