Atlas Shrugged; I Pressed

I hear you on the shoulder flexibility. I’m having issues and a crappy time with it as I hate stretching…

Good luck in the playoffs. I think the technical term for how to deal with players is “encouraged…with extreme prejudice”…

Yep…I am home. Well, technically, I am at work. You know what I mean, though.

Sorry for falling behind. Lots of football…games and practices. Workouts have stopped for the moment. My right shoulder is giving me so many problems, I decided to take a week off and to come back slowly, for a week or so.

I think I finally figured out the cause of my initial bicep tendon pain…tightness. Yes, I feel like a dumbass. I realized it when I tried to throw a football. My shoulder had gotten really tight. So, I have started doing some works with my broomstick…dislocates, windmills and such. It is helping.

To make it worse, though, playing with new bench form has actually caused it pain. Pain that hurts when I lay down at night. (I sleep with my bottom arm up, pillow between it and my head.) The reason, to me, is obvious. My shoulders are not as tight (form, not physically). I seem to be in an in between bar path, where I am not pulled down as tight as I need to be, because I am trying to hit my chest higher. That is creating a lot of instability. My shoulder is paying for it.

So, it seems that I need to hit my chest lower. Or, I need to narrow my grip even further and hope that makes the higher touch point a tighter position. Or, hell, maybe I need to touch lower AND narrow my grip. In any case, it is going to take some more time and trial. I have got to get the shoulder restored first, though. Then I am just going to have to keep trying. At least I am learning some things that I do not want to do.

As for the fun stuff. The playoffs start this Saturday. They have a good shot at winning their first game. The second game will be tougher. Should they previal, however, they will be guaranteed, at ;east, 2nd place. Fingers crossed and players yelled at…er…encouraged.

They are all pretty much burned out, though. The season started 8/1 and they are still going. Thirteen games played and a lot of practices. They’ll be glad when the season is over. I will be glad. I just want them to finish well.

Then starts Joshua’s off-season training! Poor kid…

Glad you and your son are having fun. I hope the shoulder feels better. A couple years ago I forced myself to bring my arm down when I sleep and my shoulder felt much better when I benched. It takes a while but you can get used to sleeping in a different position.

Definitely like the sound of that. We have definitely done that. Perhaps encouraged a little too intensely for some parents.

Just popping my head in for a minute. I should get back to better posting after this weekend.

The boring stuff…I have had two workouts. Both involved a broomstick, 15# DBs and the later also include bench up to 135#. Lots of reps doing lat pulls (behind the neck…and light), laterals, reverse flyes, bench (on Sunday…again, only to 135#) and lots of dislocates and windmills. Shoulder is feeling better and more flexible. Right bicep tendon is still bitching. It will get there.

Now for the interesting stuff…
Joshua’s playoffs started on Saturday. Won the game 31 - 0. Best game they had played all year. The O-line blocked. The D-line held their ground. I am not sure the other team had more than two 1st downs.
Last night we played the #2 team, in round two. This team is the largest in the league. It is really odd, but they do seem to have the five biggest players in the 7 year old league. Anyway, they took 1st possession, drove down and scored. They earned the touchdown, as it was a grind. Our possession was three and out. Then the light came on for our guys. They had discovered that they COULD actually play with them. The other team didn’t score again, while we racked up five touchdowns…34 - 6. This game was an even better team effort than the first. I was/am sooo damned proud of them. They fought, scrapped and just refused to back down or left up.

Saturday morning is the championship game. We are, obviously, guaranteed at least 2nd place. Not bad for a team that only won two games last year. Of course, the team they are playing is undefeated and, by far, the most aggressive and fundamentally sound team. From the outside looking in, we don’t have much of a chance. They have pounded us the two times we have played them.

I’m not much for that attitude, though. And, honestly, while a 1st place trophy would be nice, I really don’t care about it. I just want our guys to go out there, leave it all on the field, and make sure the other team knows, no matter the final score, that they have had all they can handle…but, hopefully, a little more than they can handle.

Oh…and Joshua is working hard to get his wristband. I am not sure if I mentioned that before. If I have, forgive the repeat. Joshua has had issues with hanging tough, sometimes. His confidence gets rattled. So, I had a wristband made for us. They say, “Pain Is Temporary - Victory Is Forever”. I told him he had to be tough and earn it. Funny how a piece of silicone can mean so much…

Good luck Coach…if they walk off the field smiling that’s a win!! Can I have a wristband? …I’m raising two college aged kids and the financial pain is anything but temporary!!! Heal up, this log is in need of PR’s!

Good luck!

Thanks Corrmhona! We’re gonna do our best to have them amped.

OG, you are absolutely right! And college tuition is the gift that keeps on giving…lol.

As you requested, a PR. My right bicep tendon is making me pay for it, though. Maybe I should have held off, but DAMN was I going stir crazy.

I warmed up a lot.

Cycled 5 reps of Laterals, Front Raises and Rear Delt Raises with 5# plates, for 3 cycles.

Alternated with MP sets of behind the neck Lat Pulls

Lat Pulls - behind the neck
85x10x3
130x10x2
175x10x5

Military Press
barx20 - slow
95x10 - slow
135x10 - slow
165x5
195x5
225x12 - PR +2 Reps – Could have had 13, but didn’t want to risk stopping there…lol…and I was gassed
225x10

Military Press - 225x12

then cycled through 3 circuits of…

Lat Pulls - listed above

Goblet Squats
60x10x3

Reverse Flyes
30x12x3

Had to go lighter on the reverse flyes, due to right shoulder pain. I threw in Goblet Squats in an attempt to find something…anything…to work my legs. As horrible as it is, my hammies hurt after the 1st set…and hurt now. I will really hurt tomorrow. That is really pathetic. Even with the light weight, though, my damned lower back is tight and achy. I am going to stick with them and see how it plays out, though.

Also, pre-workout, Joshua and I took our measurements…neck, shoulders, chest, upper and lower arm, quads and calves. We are going to measure Joshua (and me), once a month, so that he can see his progress for himself. We are going to be working on push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, maybe some dips, planks, etc… Also mixed in will be speed and agility work.

Will catch up with everyone this weekend…

Strong and fast pressing Strick. Congrats on the PR and good luck in the Championship game.

Congrats on the PR. Lots of good lifting going on.

225 x12. I’d like to hit that on bench soon. Great work!

Super stuff Big Man congrats on an awesome PR… and enjoy Saturday there just aren’t enough of them!!

Catching up with you LS. Your overhead press is really looking great. Did you ever get that 315?
Like that you are grooving the bench. Should save the shoulders and drive higher numbers once you find it.

Thanks all for the well wishes. 7 year old youth football is OVER!! That was a long three months.

Well, as anticipated, we did not win the championship game. The final was 30 - 12. It was the most points scored on them in a game. Our guys did play hard, all the way through the end. Even though it required a bit a “enthused reminding”, from coach Skip, that we finish what we start, like we start…full speed.
I really need to change my name. “Coach Skip” just doesn’t work.

Anyway, Joshua is thrilled with his 2nd place ring. He played a very good game. Since we were playing in the high school stadium, with an announcer, he got to hear his name, several times, over the PA system. Heck, he had three tackles in the 1st quarter alone.

I was/am very proud of him, and the rest of his team. They came a long way. If we coaches could have quit butting heads so much, and the younger coaches spent a little more time listening to the advice of we old guys, it might have been even better. We will work on that next year, though.

I worked out, yesterday. Nothing of great importance…

Bench
barx20
95x10
135x10
185x5
225x5
175x5
315x5x4 - playing with various hand placement. Very slow, controlled reps

Lat Pulls - behind the neck
85x10x2
130x10x2
175x10x3
200x10x3

Goblet Squats
60x10x4

Joshua and I started his offseason program yesterday. It will be fun. I think he and I are going to do some planks and situps today. I can already tell that there is going to be pain in my future.

Great stuff Coach Skip…uh I mean Big Man !! sounds like the boys ( even the old ones) had a great season… Will ther be video of the plank workout?

Drive by posting…

I know I am a week late, but my introversion has been in maximum overdrive. I cycle through it. Dealing with folks can be taxing enough. I think all the dealing with parents, other coaches and the kids just finally caught me. Anyway…

Not a lot going on. Right bicep tendon is still whining, as is my lower back. I can’t seem to find “that” groove with my bench. No matter my hand placement, I still tuck my elbows farther that they want to be for the return path. Just gonna have to keep plugging away Bench workouts have just worked up to 4 or 5 sets of 315x5, while working on hand placement and bar path.

Yesterday’s MP workout…still trying to favor my bicep tendon. With my back issues (multiple spots), I decided not to go too heavy. It ended up being a good workout, though. I can still feel the fatigue in my delts.

Alternated Sets of MP and BN Lat Pulls

Military Press
barx20
95x10
135x10
185x10
195x10
205x10
215x10
225x10 - had one left…two, if my life depended on it

BN Lat Pulls
85x15x2
130x10x2
175x10x3
200x10x3

Reverse Flyes
40x10x4

Goblet Squats
60x10x4

Also, I started a side “program”. Everyday I do…
3x10 sit-ups - will got up next week
60 sec plank - 20 sec forward, 10 sec right side, 20 sec forward and 10 sec left side…staying up in transition. Up next week…
Push-ups - +1 per day. Started at 10, last week, did 16 last night
Dips - +1 per day. Started at 10, did 16 last night. As I have no dip bars, I am using chairs. It takes part of my leg weight out, but puts me in a position where I can’t lean forward and seems to keep it in tris and shoulders.

In any case, that is what is going on. I hope everyone is doing well.

Hey Big Man I calculated your average posting frequency so by the time you read this …give or take a day or two…Happy Valentines day…wait that didn’t come out right…hope you and yours have a happy Thanksgiving!

HA! Didn’t even make you wait a week! Let’s see what that does to the average.

No workouts this weekend. Crappy weather. I felt like crap. Just decided that I am going to take a week off. Maybe a week and a half. Wife is having surgery on Wed. So, I will be holding down the fort. It’ll give my bicep tendon and back a chance to cool down. Especially this spot, up high, between my shoulder blades, just to the left of my spine, that burns like hell. I have no idea what it is. I have never had a pain quite like this one before. It just burns (sometimes) and can get sharp. Doesn’t seem to bother it to lift, though.

Anyway…just chillin’ and waiting for the long weekend.

Hi LS.
Hey I know your pain! haha. I guess that goes along with being an old fart.
Depends on how close it is to the spine. Could be a Romboid. If near the edge of the shoulder blade read up on Rotator Cuff muscles. Particularly the Supraspinitus. It inserts at about that location and is notorius for giving big benchers fits.
Here is a good tool to see the muscles - Best in Google Chrome browser. http://www.zygotebody.com/ use the sliders to hide everything except muscle and bone and zoom in on the location.

Thanks OP! That is an awesome site. Looking at that, I would agree that it is a Rhomboid major, or serratus posterior superior issue. I just wish it would go away. I don’t even remember doing anything to cause it.

Best to Mrs Strick!
