Atlas Shrugged; I Pressed

That’s incredible pressing man. Most I could ever do a couple of years ago was 275 lbs for three push presses. You’ve inspired me to reach and pass that number again. Great job!

DBasler - my MP has always been disproportionate to all my other lifts. I have no idea why. Maybe I just have good leverages for it. I’m not complaining, though. I’m a one trick pony…lol.

Steve - put those numbers up there! I know you can rep’em out as well!

GV - I used to do lots of push presses in high school. It’s a great exercise for football. Anymore, it just feels awkward and makes my back hurt. So, I just stick with the MP. That said, I do get a great pop off the bottom. So, it can be like a push press just starting at the core instead of the knees and hips.

Thanks for the encouragement, gents.

I’m throwing a party when I hit 315#.

Back again. Watch out. This could become a habit.

Today’s special was Military Press with an antagonistic Face Pull. Lots of sets and a PR, even though it was ugly. Meh…ugly works.

Alternated sets

Military Press
barx20
95x10
135x10
185x5
225x5
235x5
245x5
255x5
265x5
275x5 - PR +1 Rep
225x10 - burned me slap out…fought like a dog for that last rep.

The PR set was not pretty. I paused at the top of the 3rd rep, because I was getting “fuzzy”…popped up the 4th rep strong…had to regain my balance at the top, then dug deep and ground out the 5th. Like I said, it was ugly, but it was the 1st time I have ever been able to beg, borrow or steal 5 reps at 275. Even better coming after the 5x5.

Face Pulls (facepulls…however it is spelled)
80x10x2
105x10x3
130x10x3
155x10x2
130x12 - drop set - 105x10

Delts are burning. Feels great. Glad to finally get 275x5, but wonder what I could have done without all the lead up sets. No matter, it was a good workout.[/quote]

I are officially impressed. That’s some damn fine pressing. Outstanding.

You know me too well.

Thanks, Harry. That is definitely a compliment, coming from you!

Very nice, Steve. But I saw your log. You brought the other reps.

Feeling kind of beat up today. I have had a few hard workouts, but mainly I think it is my lack of sleep that finally caught. That and all the sweating I do at football practice. At least, that would explain the cramps.

Alternated sets…

Bench
barx20
135x10
185x5
225x5
275x5
315x5
335x5
350x5
365x3 - 4th rep was going up strong and I caught a cramp in my right hammie. Bar came back down. Cramps seem to be a common occurence with me and bench. Maybe a need a bit more potassium.

Lat Pulls
125x15x3
180x12x4
180x15

Like I said, my shoulders and elbows are feeling achy and beat up. I think I am going to stay really low weight, tomorrow, and just rep like hell. We will figure out Wednesday as it gets closer.

I come to this thread to hear the impossible as fact. You don’t disappoint.

I don’t know about that. Thank you for the sentiment, though.

On the other hand, where I am now seemed impossible, when I started back.
To that end, I owe the folks here, especially the old guard like yourself, Harry, Joe, Kevin, Bunny, Steve, , Steely D, 63Galaxie, Wilson (wherever he is), etc…, a world of debt.

When I started lifting again, right before I turned 40, I figured that my “progressing” days were over and all that I could hope for was to regain my previous strength and maintain it. The folks here really showed me that I still had plenty of time to grow and get strong.

Not only did I hit my previous records, but have surpassed them all…significantly. And now, right at 4 1/2 years later, I have no intention of slowing down. And to think…I thought it was over and done.

Thanks All!

I guess I should note yesterday’s workout. I was in a crunch for time, and it was a rep day, so I just did what I call my 100 rep workout.

Four exercises…DB Laterals, Tricep Pushdowns (Rope), Reverse Flyes and DB Curls
Do 100 reps of each, generally with a 15# or 20# DB and 50# on for the pushdowns.

DB Laterals 15x33,27,20,20
Pushdowns 50x33,27,20,25 - yes, this is 105 reps…I needed a little more burn
Rev. Flyes 15x33, 27, 20, 20
DB Curls 15x45, 25, 15, 18 - yep…103 reps

That was it. Football practice tonight. The kids get their 1st scrimmage tomorrow. It should be fun.

You know…it sucks when you do something of great personal significance and there is no one around to share it with… Or, at least, no one around that can understand why it is such a big deal.
Sadly, it all seems rather anticlimactic. Maybe because, after chasing it so long, it feels rather surreal to have finally gotten there.

Lifetime goal #2 goes down.

Alternated sets

Military Press
barx20
95x10
135x10
185x5
225x5
250x3
275x2
300x1 - very strong rep, which is what prompted the max attempt
315x1 - PR +10# - enormous struggle, but was a clean, grinding lift

FacePulls
80x15x3
105x15x3
130x12x2

This was the big one. Hitting a 405# bench, a few weeks back was also big. The 315# MP was, has been, my ultimate goal for years. And it has taken long enough. I hit 300# on 5/20/12. It took over a year to add 15#.

The rep was clean, but not pretty. I got excellent pop off my chest and my left arm stalled about 2" above my head, still inline with my forehead. My right arm was still eeking up when I was able to get the bar directly overhead and was then able to press it on through.

I always swore that I would throw a party when I hit this. Having hit this and a 405# bench in the same month, you would think I would be elated. Strangely, though, I don’t seem to be drawing much mirth out of this.

Maybe I just need a beer…

Congratulation! You just need new goals, then you’ll feel better.

Thanks, corrmhona. That will help. I still thought it would have been a bigger “cool!”, though.
I think the most immediate goal will be to start working towards being able to rep those two weights.

I think I need to stay away from this thread…every time I do, you set a PR and a 315 MP at that!!! Dang that’s a big press…well done!!

A 3 wheel OH press, a dream of mine…congrats Strick that is a great milestone and a lift that I believe should be part of powerlifting.

Thanks OG, Matty. #15 was a long time in coming. I am trying to figure out what the next goals will be, besides trying to rep them. It just seems like there needs to be more than that. of course, I told myself I wouldn’t lift more than that, because it would unnecessarily wear my joints. Hmmmmm…we’ll see.

Do any of the feds allow elbow sleeves? Specifically for RAW…

Fast morning workout…My littlest little has two football games today.

On this topic, hats off and double props to you folks who workout before noon (Paul!). I had to workout starting about 45 minutes after I woke up and it SUCKED! No energy…no oomph…nothing.

Alternated sets

Bench
barx20
95x15
135x10
185x5
225x5
275x5
315x10
315x10 - PR +2 Reps for 2nd set at this weight
315x9 - just did not have the gas. Was so gone I had to lay on the bench for a minute or so. Of course, this was all pretty crammed together.

Lat Pulls
75x15x3
130x15x3
180x15x3

That’s it! Off to the games. Each one lasts about an hour and theirs start at 11:00 and 1:00 CST. Nothing like time to rest…

Strong pre-noon benching. I can’t understand how anyone can workout in the morning and like it. Have fun at your games. My youngest has two hockey games today. All about the kids, right?

That does seem to be the case, Steve. This one alone is keeping me running.

We lost the 1st game/scrimmage (this isn’t regular season yet), 3 TDs to 2 TDs. We won the 2nd game/scrimmage, 4 TDs to 1 TD. So, overall it was a good outing. If not hot and the kids were in all black. We learned a lot about the team, where we need to make personnel changes and what fundamentals to give the most focus, next week.

Joshua did fine. He had his hands fun, during the 1st game, with a guy he was easily giving up 30# to (which is significant when you only weigh 75#). The second game he busted loose, from his noseguard position. He had a solo tackle and 3 assists. Almost had the only sack of the game. If he ever develops a nose for the ball, he will be dangerous. Now…to make him a little meaner.

Good times. After working out yesterday morning, spending nearly 4 hours on the field coaching, in the heat and only ingesting a protein shake, water and a small bag of doritos, until supper, I was pretty much wiped.

So jealous! not of your lifts…well ok those to…but I miss coaching and watching my kids play…enjoy the bad games as much as good and your son will have an awesome experience!

OG, that is sound advice. I will do my best to heed it.
Yesterday’s workout was just another 100 rep workout.

Pushdowns, DB curls and rev. flyes until I hit 100 reps I believe it took 4 sets on each. Followed with 30 reps of concentration curls.

I am still sore and run down from Saturday.
