Atlanta Gym Scene

T-nation,

Found out I’ll be moving to the Southwest Atlanta (Ft McPherson) area in two months.

Can anyone recommend a good gym in the area. Doing ‘yellow pages’ searches is useless since all I’m finding are “Health Clubs” and the like…and we all know why those places are out of the question…

Thanks.

Jeff,

The Atlanta gym scene kinda sucks. I think there is a hardcore barbell club place affiliated with GA Tech. Lee Haney has a couple gyms, I think in the Decateur area. NW Atlanta, i.e. Marietta has Coffee’s gym which is great for Oly/PL types. Duluth has SHerman Ledford’s gym, quest nutrition. email me at sshetler@******.net I live and work in the Atlanta area. I will do my best to help you out.

In general, there are some pretty good 24 hr. “key” gyms in the Clayton County/Soulth Fulton/Fayette County area. In addition to being relatively inexpensive ($30 - $50 per month), they all have a good variety of free weights and machines.

Jeff,

I used to live in Atlanta in the Sandy Springs area (just outside of 285 on the north side). I used to work out at what was PTI - now Bodyplex. Unfortunately they painted it health club colors but it is a decent gym to train and there used to be very few people there during the day. The dumbbells used to go up to 200 but I think they now go to 150. With Atlanta traffic, it will probably be too far for you but I know there are a couple of Gold’s Gyms on the South side of Atlanta. Bodyplex is on the corner of Roswell Rd (off 285) and Hammond in the Whole Foods Shopping plaza.

Good luck!

Try one of those. I don’t know of any in near Ft. Mac.

There is more than one LA Fitness in the Atlanta area. If you can deal with a more conventional client?le and some crowding, the equipment is quite nice.

Or you try the Barbell Club just off Tech campus under O Keefe gym. This place charges about $40 a semester. It’s housed in a basement underneath an an older basketball court. Loads of barbells, piles of equipment, looks like a place Arnold would have used in the 70s. Check it out, it beats the tar out of the YMCAs.

Try Barbell Club on Tech Campus. It’s hardcore and I can say that from having personally worked out there many times. They just repainted and resurfaced. Overall, quality gym if it’s close to you.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice…you probably just saved me days of driving around scouting out gyms.

Lex Luger (the wrestler) owns Main Event Fitness in Buckehead. never been but supposed to be top notch.

Fit 4 Life in Union City (southwest Atl)is kinda small but has good equipment.

hey guys,
I’m a grad student at Georgia Tech and a member of the barbell club, and I have some really bad news. The GT athletic association has asked the administration, and it has complied, to have barbell club evicted from all of its facilities that it has had for 25 years so that the womans’ volleyball team can have the entire space for its own use. Despite the womans’ vball team already having excellent practice/dressing facilities in alexander coliseum, the administration feels it would be better to deprive the 1000 members of the barbell club (900 students + 100 alumni/faculty) a place that is serious about weight training. since last january 1st, the club has spent over $70,000 to improve its facility (don’t worry, it still looks like somewhere arnold would train). Right now, we’re conducting a campus wide campaign to raise support against a decision that is obviously unfair, unjust, and insensitive to student wants and needs. if anyone out there has any ties to tech or the barbell club, we would greatly appreciate your help. i can give you the email address of the club president if you are interested. anyways, i’ll keep you updated with any breaking news and please wish us luck, because we’re gonna need a lot of it.

I have visited the GT barbell club on more than one occassion. If what Blitz is saying above is true, than it is a tragedy!
