I’ve never understood the whole “ATG” (by the way, whoever invenmted that term should be kicked in the nuts) vs parallel squat debate. They’re two completely different movements with two completely different goals. It’s like asking which is better, a push press or a close grip bench? Well, it all depends on your goals, doesn’t it?
But to be honest, anytime I hear someone saying “ATG is stronger derrr” it’s just an excuse to make them feel better about their shitty squat. If you’re competing in olympic weightlifting, stop worrying about what PLers do, and if you’re a PLer, stop worrying about what weightlifters do… and if you compete in neither, why the fuck do you care?
People care because it’s like their religion. Or maybe they are weak and trying to feel superior in some way to protect the ego.
Orginally this thread was no different than a ‘what’s your box squat vs. competition style free squat’. I think the OP was just trying to figure out if he had a weakness. I know I like to know when I’m weak from a particular leverage so I can hammer the crap out of it. And I have had luck using Oly squat style for assistance.

No, anyone who mentions ATG squats at all must be bragging about how super awesome they are. Anyone who does any other variation of the squat must immediately post in this thread in a dismissive, defensive manner. The only people who do ATG squats are those who think they are superior to everyone else for using a full range of motion.
This is the powerlifting forum, right? Not the “full range of motion” forum? We all understand that in most powerlifting federations, parallel squats are sufficient? I mean, sure, we could go to NFL forums and argue that running backs should travel 10 yards beyond the end-zone for extra cardiovascular benefit, but that would just be stupid. Same here.

bottom line is try squatting your best powerlifting style training squat pr ass to grass andd i bet 9 times out of 10 you wont get it. ass to grass is harder. that is a fact. i understand this is a powerlifting forum but some guys have brought up that ass to grass squatting is stupid. i disagree. i think it makes your powerifting style parallel squat stronger. and it strengthens your posterior chain way more.
ATG is a bad term that means nothing . Close stance below parallel makes more sense. I’ve seen many ATG claims barely break parallel, not break parallel , or break it significantly . Your individual leverages and limb lengths and other factors will determine how deep you will squat in various stances.

Actually it’s more like going to NFL forums and asking “hey i know a lot of you guys play football, what is the relationship between your number of interceptions and your 40?”
OP basically asked “hey i know a lot of you guys do a powerlifting squat (you know, because this is a powerlifting forum and all), what is the relationship between your pl squat and your atg squat?”
I know this is extremely difficult to understand (for you), but no one argued that ATG were better or that powerlifters should do them instead.
And for the OP, my well below parallel (to the limits of my safe mobility) with a high bar position, close stance, and elevated heel shoe squat is the same as my box squat. About 90% of my power squat.

Thank you. Seems like you can read better than most of the butthurtz who posted on this thread.

Hence, this is a stupid thread .
EXCUSE the term I used. I meant OLYMPIC STYLE squat.
This thread wasn’t supposed to be about preference or which is better. But since that’s what the thread has evilved to be i’ll play. I like atg. It’s more rewarding to me. Also when i’m pushing myself with something really difficult i don’t have to worry. Because even if it’s “high” it’s really just parallel. It’s something that will always be debated. But I’m a beliver.
