How about a thread “powerlifting: measure of strength, or measure of how fat and short limbed you are?”
Gear just exaggerates this effect. As do sumo pulls. As far as setting records, just join a lenient organization or if all else fails wait 5 years and knee below waist will be considered parallel. [/quote]

Lol. Storm said weiner.
Lol. wramsey is mad.
From a basic physics perspective, getting precisely to depth should obviously be more efficient than going lower, if you don’t train for JUST TO DEPTH you probably won’t be an enormous amount stronger at it than however you normally train but science is on your side. Powerlifting is not a measure of how much absolute force you can generate through maximal range of motion it is a sport of exactness and getting the lift done in the way that allows the greatest weight to be moved through the minimal range of motion. Everyone needs to care less about what other federations and lifters are doing, I firmly believe powerlifting should be primarily a subjective concern unless you are competitive on a professional level. I’ve trained with a few grizzled old iron veterans with records on their names and it’s amazing how much shit they don’t talk about how other people lift or in what compared to how much hate gets spewed by weak people. Strength is impressive and paramount in powerlifting, hell yeah, but a weaker and more technically sound or flexible or etc. lifter can walk away with the better total.
haha apparently it’s everyone else who is mad. op asked a perfectly legitimate question and out come all the defensive half squatters. we get it that’s what federations allow, the point is that federations and powerlifting in general have become a joke. if that’s your thing fine, it’s no better or worse than olympic squatting. but there’s a reason powerlifting isn’t in the olympics and why push/pull meets are becoming increasingly popular

Then why don’t you stop talking trash on the internet and go show powerlifting what a joke it is …

There is only one reason powerlifting isn’t in the olympics? Oh man, I can’t wait to here what it is, and how all of the other reasons people list aren’t the actual reason.

read the first post i made in the thread. it was not raw vs geared. it only turned to that after some folks decided to start talking shit about ATG and how it was stupid. I SIMPLY wanted to know everyones atg to parallel RATIOS.
I didn’t start the thread with the intention to say ATG was better or anything. AGAIN, read my first fucking post.

damn…take your meds and relax, lol
this thread has been pretty light hearted with no ugliness, any slights on the gear vs raw thing has been IMHO done in a joking way.

I think my “ATG” squat is 40-50lbs behind my regular raw squat.
It really depends on what you are doing. If you are training for performance not on a platform eg track, football, field, rugby, etc, high bar squats will probably be better depending on your levers.

Like you said, it really depends on the person. I squat rather wide and still perform well in sports despite not being skilled.

I don’t have time to read. I only have time to be a reactionary and post the first thing that comes to mind after I make a general, completely unfounded assumption about something. Since I am not smart enough to understand this thread, my intial emotional response was fear an anger. I am still not sure what is happening.
Personally, I train to do well in a meet and ATG squatting doesnt do anything for that, for me. I squat very low in meets anyway, by accident, and I only train with a wider foot position and to high box’s. Anything but optimal is a waste of time, energy, and pounds on my total.

I’ve never understood the whole “ATG” (by the way, whoever invenmted that term should be kicked in the nuts) vs parallel squat debate. They’re two completely different movements with two completely different goals. It’s like asking which is better, a push press or a close grip bench? Well, it all depends on your goals, doesn’t it?
But to be honest, anytime I hear someone saying “ATG is stronger derrr” it’s just an excuse to make them feel better about their shitty squat. If you’re competing in olympic weightlifting, stop worrying about what PLers do, and if you’re a PLer, stop worrying about what weightlifters do… and if you compete in neither, why the fuck do you care?
