At What Point Do You Think You Are "Qualified" to Give Out Advice?

You should not give advice yet (“never” might be a little strong) because you have not amassed sufficient training experience and progress to merit doing so. Please read below for further explanation.

I see so many people walk in just mindlessly drifting from machine to machine not knowing what they are supposed to do and spend half the time staring at others. I want to give pointers but would people actually listen, I don’t want to waste my time.”

…at a time when he was benching 95 pounds and had an active thread bemoaning his lack of progress. Why would anyone take advice from a 155lb 16 year old who by his own admission was not making satisfactory progress?

You have done the same in this thread (indicating that you would like to give pointers to fellow gym-goers, despite a lack of progress and knowledge of your own) which brings what this entire thread is about: who is “qualified” to give out advice? I don’t know exactly where that line should be drawn, but I’m pretty sure that “skinny teenagers bench-pressing 95 pounds” are a little below it.

Your training log indicates that you have made some progress, and that’s great, but you are still not nearly at a level where you are qualified to tell other people in the gym what to do.

So i should let people in the gym to continue to be at risk of injury and just doing random pointless workouts that will getbthem no progress at all ?

yes. That’s exactly what you should do. Just get on with your own workout.

Basically, yes.

You worrying about what other people are doing in the gym is like worrying about what other people in the supermarket have in their shopping cart (“I can’t believe she’s buying four pints of ice cream. That’s so much crap.”) or worrying about what the kids at school are wearing (“Brown sneakers with blue jeans and a red shirt? OMG that’s such a fashion faux pas.”).

And, again, seeing a few reps of something from across the gym gives you zero context about why they’re doing things that way. There’s always a chance that the person is training 100% correctly and you’re simply missing information. Throw up more hypotheticals if you want, but I can come up with valid reasons why pretty much anything that looks “wrong” can actually be appropriate given the right circumstances.

Do i have to record people at the gym to show you that what they are actually doing is stupid?

Im talking about the people with zero gains. That go and do random crap and dont have any knowledge of anything. Im not talking about advanced people.

I simply worry because i dont want others to get injured . Like people doing one rep maxes on the leg extension. Yeah thats great for the knees and i dont see what benefit that will provide or what it will do apart from injury ,i used to do heavy leg extensions and use it as a strength builder but i learned real quick not to.

Realistically speaking, the level of stupid in what someone is doing is inversely related to their willingness to accept advice. A recurrent act of monumental stupidity usually has a lot of thought and justification behind it.

Just like what you are doing now.

people don’t like to be told what to do, and they particularly don’t like to be told what they’re doing is wrong.

Adults also, rightly or wrongly, believe that kids are stupid. Being a kid, you can bet that any adult you try and advise is going to dismiss your advice on account of you being a stupid kid. Please note that I’m not saying that you are stupid, just that adults’ perception of people your age is such.

Seriously, duke, over the course of your gym-going lifetime you are going to see shit in gyms that ranges from dangerous to weird to absolute pants-shitting terror inducing. Just keep your headphones in and your focus on your own workout. Trust us; it’s the right thing to do.

Yes. You’re not experienced enough to give advice that would help them. If you can’t make much progress yourself, what makes you think you can give them helpful advice?
