This is a very ‘expansive’ question. In the Ironmind video, I cant remember exactly which one, but I’ll use this as an example, because there’s video footage of it, to save arguments, Ivan Chacarov squats 270kg, rock bottom, three times at a body weight of 90kg, theres 2.2 lbs in a kg, (we’re metric in the uk) 90x 2.2 equals 198lb,s which isnt 205 but I think is close enough. Thats a 3 times body weight squat, 3 times, no equipment, no belt, I think thats outstanding, in another Ironmind video, Stephen botev squats 320kg, at 110 kg bodyweight, at the end of a huge workout, i’ve read that his best squat in training, although not trying for a ‘1 rep max’ was 330 x 3 at 110kg bodyweight, I dont think anyone can argue that these two examples are not outstanding, I havn’t included powerlifters squats, because the type of squat you’ve mentioned in your post is the ‘ass to grass’ squat which the olympic lifters use. I personally think that a double bodyweight squat is ‘good’ especially if perfomed in the rock bottom style, and for reps. The issue of what your body type, fast twitch muscle fibre type, whether you choose to use steroids etc are obviously all factors determining your squatting ability, not to mention how hard you train, but I suppose thats another topic altogether isnt it?

Get yourself into a better training enviorment and you will.
Bigger guys will also have a tougher time with the relative lifts. Supertraining has a pretty nice mathematical description of this.
6’2" and 240 is pretty big…but 5’6" and 200 is bigger, according to BMI. Yet the 5’6" would have to squat 80lbs less to get 2x bw. Just a random example. Also consider how many guys you hear of full squatting 600@200. There are some. I hardly ever hear of anyone full squatting 900@300. This might be partially due to there being less 300lb guys than 200lb guys, but part of it is that heavier, taller guys will have more problems lifting a lot relative to their bodyweight.

Perhaps I will find a log to do that with this summer and post a silly video of me squatting it.

Knobbers is a freak.
I can also relate to having my PRs after a session of OL.
I generally agree with the guidelines given about a good, very good and excellent raw squat, maybe decreasing them slightly to 405, 475, and 550 since it is no-no-no style.
I think people are harping on the fact that if you train in a gym with weak people it is hard (not impossible) to get very strong yourself. It is like being a big fish in a little pond, you get complacent when you are the best but if you go to a big gym and train with other hardcore people that will help you to push beyond yourself and achieve more.
One comment I did take issue with is when someone said “a slightly above parallel squat is similar to a powerlifting squat.” NOT. A true powerlifting squat is well below parallel and almost ass to grass, especially at the lighter weight classes and national level competitions. Doing box squats going down an extra inch or two at that parallel range will often take off 50 lbs from your squat. This is why so many people bomb out in a meet, they don’t realize how deep they have to go.
Bottomline - surround yourself with people pushing themselves and you will push yourself in return.

Senseless,
Sweet video dog! It’s nice to see someone do some squats like i do and teach them. I’ve always done them exactly the same. I’m lucky enough to have a degree in sports science and i teach biomechanics of sports techniques.
I’ve done ATG squat 1RM of 220kg (495lbs) @ 90kg (198lbs) BW. I was 8% BF. 24 yr old. 8 years training. Shoulder width stance. 5’11"
This was 2 years ago and i don’t do full squats now coz i spint competitively. However my strength hasn’t totally escaped me but i only do single-leg half squts now. 160kg (360lbs) on the smith rack.
I can also do a one-arm chin up FULL ROM too. Although few beleive me unless they see it. I’ll have to get one on tape like you did and post it!
Sweet work man!

I find it funny that I was frowned on in this forum for never seeing an atg raw 2x bw squat (live, not video…like I’ve never seen it in a video). Some people made it seem like this goes on in every gym and then the sense man posts a video of himself and everyone goes gaga over the lift like they’ve never seen it before. Sometimes I wonder about you people.
Anyways, I front squatted 300 raw today and I’m just under 200lbs. Who else can do that here? Yes I’m bitter![/quote]
Kir dog,
Don’t be bitter man! Sounds like you are doing “proper” squats with about 100 of the rest of us Worldwide!
The reason why everyone goes mental over these ATG squats is because not many massive gym boys can deal with people seeing them squat ‘properly’ with one plate on each. Their ego’s can’t handle it, instead they load up 3-4 plates and do 1/4 squats so the 'uneducated ’ trainers think they are really strong. You’ll never escape that shit!
Stay true to the ATG’s bro and if you want to get technicall on their ass… just throw this formula at them and then you can decide who’s the strongest ( pound-for-pound)
Strength = weight lifted x distance bar moves / BW
Give them that one and you’ll probably come out on top and destroy the bitterness!
