ART for Sciatica

Gang:

Have you ever suffered from back Sciatica? What have you done to treat it and exercises to help alleviate?

For example, is ART effective for Sciatica?

Thanks,

I have had a number of back and hip injuries ending up with siaticia(?). I still see a chiropractor every month or so, more often if I can afford it. When they do a side hip roll, rememberf how it is done. Then do it at home.

While active release is very beneficial, if you indeed have sciatica the most likely problem is pelvic/lumbar joint dysfunction where the joint is fixated, which is causing and promoting inflammation which is affecting certain nerve roots, most likely -(Lumbar 4, 5; Sacral 1,2,3).

Find a good DC. Take care of your spine. ART is good but if you have a structural problem you can do muscle work all day and not solve the problem. There are DC’s who do both Adjustment and ART…

Yep Ive done the ART thing for the same. The guy that did the ART was also a kinsologist (sp) and a chiro. It was a long way to drive in chicago traffic and cost more then it should have for the results that I got.

I also tried deep tissue and other massage, but none helped that much.

Then one day I was doing good mornings and it felt kind of good in an odd way and then no more sciatica pain. Thats what worked for me, good luck to you on it as I know it just really sucks.

My Sciatica has been eliminated. The ART helped but most importantly, my ART practictioner showed me some stretches that helped. I only went to one ART session.

He mentioned that the pirformis (sp?), a nerve that runs along the leg has be alleviated. The stretches, and work on hip mobility, pulled from article on this website, has really helped.

The piriformis is a muscle.

sounds like you did not have sciatica.

You most likely had piriformis syndrome. This mimics sciatica, although the 2 are distinct and separate issues.

Glad to hear you feeling better!

In some individuals the Sciatic nerve runs through the Piriformis muscle. Tightness in the muscle irritates the nerve. The chair stretch is typically used to alleviate the symptoms.

Anyone try ART for SI joints?

Active Release is for soft tissue, not joints. Unless your SI issues are soft-tissue related, it won’t be a much help.
