Arnold's Genetics

 • until you believe as i have in your own power of suggestion as the mega determining success factor, and it has nothing to do with genetics… just remember this quote… “Ignorance is your own slavery”

Dude, the simple mental techniques you are ranting about are called ‘positive reinforcement’, ‘visualisation’ and ‘elimination of negative self-talk’. We all know this (us T-Nation regulars), because we strive to educate ourselves as much as we can regarding all things performance related. We all accept that “Ignorance is your own slavery” which is why most of us keep an open mind. Something which you seem painfully unable to do…
Yes. And coaches have been using their techniques with athletes for years. Mine did. They ARE useful. But there is nothing magical about it. Gotta hand it to Gironda for spinning it into a spiel and trying to give it an aura of mystique to sell books. Open your eyes a little, Go Heavy…

I haven’t read every single thread on here, but the many I have read did not mention an important point about genetic potential. Genetic potential does not refer to someone’s original physique. It refers to their potential to build muscle mass/strength. For example, you could have one guy who is 150lbs and one guy who is 185lbs (both of whom have never trained). The smaller guy may have more genetic potential for muscle growth and grow like a weed. The originally bigger guy may lack the genetic potential to build a huge amount of muscle.
I think some of us have mentioned this. But you are absolutely right. And it bears repeating. Of course you can have two skinny guys, neither of whom know shit about eating or lifting. Put them both on a program where they put the same effort in. One could easily put on mass a greater rate.
Robert P. wrote:

Reconsider your points. Arnold was a great bodybuilder. And many people who blame genetics are nowhere near their genetic limits. However, those limits exist and they will keep a vast majority of bodybuilders at having a shot a Mr.Olympia.
Yes.

Where are you from? Where do you go to school? Is it one of those schools that teaches evolution or just creationism? Sometimes I feel that I’d like to fly around for awhile. I think it’d be an also sensation. If I concentrate hard enough, could I change my DNA and temporarily sprout wings?
Go heavy fool wrote:
T-Nation: I remember reading about Arnold the Governator using a mental trick in his early years. He didn’t like leg training, so he purposefully walked around saying, “I love leg days!” Sure enough, he built a set of powerful legs. Was he on to something?
Yup, he was able to psych himself out enough to perform a brutal leg workout. How would you otherwise describe it? Did his self-hypnosis cause fairies to come down and sprinkle fairy dust on him that someone made his legs grow.

Go Heavy, the key thing you are consistently overlooking is that the effectiveness of these mindpower/visualization techniques is that they help lifters and athletes hammer their workouts. They do not cause DNA changes in isolation through some mysterious metaphysical process.

It stands to reason then that by changing your mind you can change your DNA. The mind permeates every cell of your body, so whatever you think reflects in the body.

Hey, everyone knows that evolution stuff is all crap. The only logical theory is that of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out this site: http://www.venganza.org/ ).

i used Arnold as an example of someone with “smaller” genetics. he wasn’t born big nor had natural calves or a big bone structure. Another “Apollonian type physique” flex wheeler…Both built gigantic muscles and were not born that way and had to work hard to get that look.
Flex was a participant in a study we recently conducted in collaboration with the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh involving 62 men who made unusually large gains in muscle mass in response to strength training (extreme responders). Flex was one of only nine extreme responders that had the very rare “myostatin mutation.” Myostatin is the gene that “limits muscle growth.” Specifically, Flex had the rarest form of myostatin mutation at the “exon 2” position on the gene. This simply means Flex has a much larger number of muscle fibers compared to the other subjects or the normal population. We believe that these are the very first myostatin mutation findings in humans and the results of this landmark study have already been submitted for publication. Flex was also found to have a very unusual type of the IGF-1 gene. In fact, Flex was the only participant in the study that did not have a “match.” All of the other extreme responders had at least three other subjects with a matching IGF-1 gene. Based upon Flex’s very unique genetic profile, we plan to expeditiously publish a scientific paper that reveals his complete genotype in specific detail.

Isn’t it obvious that Go Heavy Fool is just some very impressionable kid that lives in a fantasy world where anyone who has ever been successful in a certain endeavor is right about EVERYTHING when it comes to success in that activity. Hell…Arnold’s post-workout nutrition was once a whole chicken and a pitcher of beer. Vince Gironda, while a great trainer with many wonderful ideas, is not right about EVERYTHING. He idolizes these greats to the point that they are gods in his mind, never making a questionable move. Hell, I would MUCH rather have CT train me than Arnold. It’s also obvious this kid has never taken a psychology class…just take a look at bushido’s post for more on that. He reminds me of a H.I.T. disciple or a kid with a very serious case of narcisism…“let you in on the secrets of reality”…that actually made me laugh out loud. He posts shit about having his I.Q. tested and his aptitude as a musician, the first of which I have concluded is bullshit from very early on, the latter with posts that any good musician would laugh at. It’s all very pathetic really.

You get the last post Harris, since you seem like the typical internet flame thrower. I throw flames on my guitar. Mine is a littl more productive don’t you think?
I like your advice. I couln’t agree more. I am doing just that. I have wasted enough time here.
You resorted to name calling at this point because you ran out of intelligence. I guess I will take your advice, you can stay here and beat of yo yourself and whatever witty thing you think you have just typed. But , don’t forget to come see my live at Floyd’s Music Store in tallahassee Florida.

HOLY SHIT! I live in Tallahassee and am wrapping up my DEGREE in music PERFORMANCE at Florida State. I may have to come see who Go Heavy really is…

Who are you playing with? I personally dont go to Floyds, but I could make a special trip. Kudos to you for playing there.

You keep inviting us, but when is the show? Im probably the only person reading this thread close enough to come…so, I guess just be ready for whatever kind of review…

Actually I live only 90 miles away from Tallahassee. Creed sucks. I’ve played in quite a number of paid gigs. BTW…why make comments on my life when you have no idea who the fuck I am? Valedictorian out of 600 students in college of business at VSU and scholarship to Mercer University School of Law…yeah my life sucks. Your replies are pathetic…never did you address any of my points in regards to lifting. The only thing you’re on top of is a big pile of bullshit.
