Arm Training For Size

Are EZ-bar curls any good for building overall mass? Is a straight bar better?

I just started a 10 week Russian Bear routine…trying to gain 10-20 pounds, I was thinking of doing a few sets of heavy curls each workout.

Whether you use a straight bar or EZ curl bar and find one more effective than the other is completely individual. I have never liked the feeling in my forearms when doing straight bar curls. That is why, if I am doing curls using a bar, I will usually use the EZ curl bar or the HS machine that simulates using the EZ curl bar. By supinating your grip, it takes away some of the stress that is placed on your radius and ulna. The two bones cross each other which can sometimes mean less stress in that area. It has always worked that way for me.

X, he also might like the efects & feel of a Trapeze Curl bar.

I used to have two of those tri-bars. I actually did like them for curls.

I would load up both of them for the farmers walk…then I realized I didn’t like the farmers walk.
The farmer’s walk is undoubtably brutal, but I tell you it makes my forearms grow like weeds.

that is one funky looking curl bar.

I dont have to work my arms to make them bigger,They get bigger as My body gets bigger.I do however train them so I can get the shape I want.

And unless you use heavy ass weight for everything else, working your arms at the end of your workout for 3-4 sets with medium weight can be done every time

but keep in mind that genetics play a 50% role in arm size.As Prof and someone else said, they had to get to nearly 250lbs to get 20in arms.I dont know hwo tall they are,but I’m 5’11 and weigh 205lbs and have 17in arms.So I’m 3in under and 45lbs lighter(though i do wanna be that weight one day).

When I wanted to make my arms grow, I used this split.

 1. Back (main) Bicep (sub) Abs
 2. Legs
 3. Chest (main) Tri (sub) Abs
 4. OFF
 5. Shoulder Bicep Abs
 6. Triceps Calves Traps
 7. OFF

I found the second pounding a week on the arms really helped me add the size that I wanted. As far as 21’s and exercises like that I did them sometimes, but not on a regular basis. For the debate between straight bar or ez bar I would alternate them in my workouts, one week using straight and the other using e-z. After the bar curls I would do supinated curls with strict form with a heavy dumbbell.

For your own fun and a nice pump before a night out try this. We called it 100’s. Take a couple of your buddies, grab a light ez curl bar and make a guy do as many as he can and then pass it over to the next guy, first to get to 100 wins. You will feel this one in the morning.

Hi everyone

Was just thinking about my arm training.

When i train arms i usually just go 1 set rest 1 min do next set and so forth.
I have never done, drop sets,supersets,21’s,run the rack etc etc.

Now at 249 pounds and arms 18.25 inch im thinking and looking at my arms thinking they should be a little bigger for my weight and height,im 6’4

Now i hit squats and deads heavy and my arms grew from them, overall weight increase gives me bigger arms. But i was wondering about doing things like supersets and all those i mentioned just to try something different.
How has the above worked for u guys for increasing arm size?

Thanks

Supersets work well if you allow enough time between sets. The advantage of supersets is that you work one muscle group and then the opposite (agonist) the very next set. There is a neurological effect that you get by doing this that actual helps increase your strength more than by doing straight sets alone. I think one of the authors on this site has talked about this before, can’t remember.

In any case, do a barbell curl and then weight dips the next set. Or whatever exercises you are doing.

Also remember that your arms get a lot of work with all the other exercises you are doing. So sometimes it may be that you are overtraining your arms, which will make your other lifts suffer because your arms are not able to help with the compound lift to their full extent. So experiment on just how much additional arm work you need for maximal gains. I find that a few less sets for my arms than the other muscle groups works best.

There’s a difference between cheat curls and power curls. Use the amount of momentum you need to curl the weight, don’t turn the movement into a speed movement.
ok, I get that, but I never knew that there is actually a difference between power curls and cheat curls, I always though that power curls just sounds prettyier…so what is the difference exactly and what goals are they used for?

thanks for the answers everyone btw.

you should just try to hit your chest and back hard…youll hit the tricep doing chest and the bicep doing back…most people dont have to worry about isolating the arms
I used to think that too. Then I started arm training again and they grew instantly.

Question- I am 190 in weight, 5’9" in height. My arms are 16.5 inches, but I feel they are small compared to the rest of me. What arm size should i be shooting for?

I’m sorry, but how old are you? You shoot for whatever arm size you are shooting for. You are truly waiting on someone to give you a goal? Cool…30".

If you don’t do direct arm work, less than you might like to have, is the answer to that Q.

I am 18.
My goal is to have arms large enough that whenever I get in a fight, I can make my opponent slap himself while I chant “quit hitting yourself, quit hitting yourself”, regardless of how large my opponent is. I would also like my arms to be large enough to make women think to themselves-“I want him to father my children, but only after half a decade or so of hot loving without the worries of creating some large armed hellspawn”. I would like to be able to rip a sleeve by flexing.

That being said, I probably need bigger arms.

Much bigger.

Stig- I do do some arm isolation. I wil do some more. I squatted today, I didn’t see any difference in my arms, I don’t know why people seem to think arm size is correlated to squat strength.

No you need a smaller shirt.

He didn’t mean directly he ment, by squating he gains weight so it puts inches on his arms.

Probably the funniest post I’ve read in a couple of weeks.

Well, At least I have very clear goals. Chris- my shoulders barely fit into the shirts I have now. All of my t-shirts are actually stretched out at the top, so they look like a natural V-taper even though they are not made that way. I think that is why I have smaller arms in proportion, they are not getting enough sunlight in the shadow of my shoulders.

Fine. You get an award for that post.
