Arm Measurements

I just measured my arms yesterday for the first time ever. Left is 13" and the right is 13.5". When I did the measurements both arms were unflexed and cold. Is this correct??? If so then I am puny and pathetic. I’m 6’2 194 and around 10% bf and I thought my arms would be bigger, like at least 15 inches, but maybe I’m just measuring wrong. This is very dissapointing. Someone enlighten me.

I think you are supposed to do non flexed cold yes.

however I do it cold both flexed and non flexed.

I find that my non flexed measurements dont grow at the same rate as my flexed measurements, which leads me to believe flexed may be a better way of keeping track of your progress.

I think for the purposes of people comparing arm size with each other the non flex is used?

i dont know alot about this, im just hypothesising out of thin air here.

Oh and if it helps, my flexed is 16.5 and non flexed is 14.5.

so im not alot bigger than you, but I’m much bigger than your average ‘man’ these days.

also, if you are 6 foot 2, it may lend to the illusion that you have small arms due to your height.

do chinups and plenty of them.

I put 1 inch on each arm after 8 weeks on ‘starting strength’.

Ya, I took some pictures about 4 weeks ago and everything looks great but my arms. They look like sticks compared to everything else. It must just be from having long arms.

Arm measurements are done FLEXED. Honestly, do some of you just avoid bodybuilding magazines all together?

If so, why?

Some of you are missing shit that most would get on one flip through a random bodybuilding magazine or at least some interest whatsoever in bodybuilding itself. Why would someone take a measurement of their arm unflexed?

From one small arm guy to another…your arms are small. I am 5’7", 173 and my arms are 13.5 unflexed and cold. My arms look small compared to my torso. Yours do not look small because your arms are long.

Weighted chins and dips are good.

I had some luck with this:

Good luck

Many sites online say to measure cold and unflexed, more than that say to measure flexed. A source of confusion I am sure.

What source states it should be unflexed?

You’re puny and pathetic. So, what? What are you going to do about it? Everyone has to start somewhere. What’s your plan of attack?

Sources that don’t know jack shit about bodybuilding.

The way modern muscle mags are that’s pobably a GOOD thing!

Hell, there was an article on the front page of this website for the entire last week where the picture was a guy measuring his flexed arm! Do you not even read this site?!

This one does not say contracted or flexed (so remains ambiguous):

Here is what google provides:

My point, when I have looked in the past I found few if any that said flexed and more that said unflexed. Personally, I like the idea of flexed if only because it gets me closer to my goals.

I disagree. I think Muscular Development is one of the best out there right now. Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that things that used to be considered common knowledge are now completely unknown while some seem to sit back and claim no one should be reading any media that actually focuses on bodybuilding.

Please explain that to me and why you think it is a good thing.

That was the first time in some time that I saw it done explicitly.

Dude, people measure their arm flexed in bodybuilding because the whole goal is to build a big arm with a nice peak that looks good in a biceps pose. How could you asses any peak you do have if your arm isn’t flexed? You all thought Ronnie Coleman had 23" arms with his arms by his sides?

Then you, like many others apparently, need to quit running from media that actually focuses on what your goal is.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen on this site is getting newbies to avoid otehr sources of info.

common knowledge is not all that common

It says “Measure the arm at its greatest girth, which should be at the peak of the biceps.” Do your biceps have a peak when they are not flexed?!

Never cite bb.com on this forum and expect a serious response! Plus, it was written by the guy in the photo above. Does he look like he knows anything about arm training?

It was part of the shopping process. But that was one bit of information that was hard to find on this site. It would benefit from an article explicitly on how to measure and size/proportions. I am looking back on a thread on the arm size of people on the site and there is some confusion there as well.
