I’m with you on the attitude towards benching. I’d much rather do overhead work, but P/L has bench press as one of the lifts, so…
My abs are sore sore sore!! Those db rows get me every time…in combo with the get ups, planks and push-ups, whew!
Rblue- EDT will definitely kick your butt! I’ve done a 4 week stint in the past and loved it…I like that it challenges you to beat your reps each time…
Robilyn- GL with the get ups…they are awkward at first! And I hear ya about the jeans…Im carrying more junk in the trunk, haha! My daughter will be three in April! ![]()
DCA- have you done a meet yet? Bench is only part of the score, right? I think it would be fun to do a meet one of these days, just to say I DID IT!! But I still don’t like bench ![]()
Well duh your abs are sore!! Your last workout was killer core work - awesome.
So how did you like the weighted plank and pushups? I still need to try the plank - I think that would be a good challenge for me.
I find turkish getups hella hard - probably b/c of the coordination needed and keeping the arm up like that is difficult for me. You did great on that!
I keep hearing about EDT, i should look into this.

4 meets so far. 1st one I bombed on…wait for it…bench press. The second one I bombed in the squat. The third I finally got a piddly total - which I am going to destroy in the next meet - and the 4th was a deadlift only meet which I won (he said proudly).
And I don’t like benching. SO I’ll just have to get better at it so I do like it, just like I did with squats.
Ta- DAH!
I may end up doing this after the challenge is over in April…would like to see what it does now that I’m leaner…
Masch- it took me a couple trys to get those get ups…I even practiced at home…try em some time!
DCA- see what I miss for not following along with your millions of logs?
Did you have a coach? Did you stick to 5/3/1 when you were training for those meets? I think I’d like to meet with someone at least once a week or so…I train alone, but it would be nice to have someone there to yell at me…I felt the same about squats as I do bench, but now its reversed…you gotta do what you hate to get better at it!
^That looks like a killer plan!
^ yep!!
Let’s DO IT!! ![]()
I even got all the downloadable stuff on it, and I have the DVD ![]()
Here is another thread where peeps talk about it Forums - T Nation - The World's Trusted Community for Elite Fitness
Not raining yet…gotta go out and get my walk on…Im so sore!!
^ well, I *had the files, but I think they are on a geek stick somewhere…I’m willing to share if I can ever find it again! ![]()
I’m part of the “I Hate Benching” club, too. What’s super embarrassing is that I have to open in the double digits at meets (in a bench shirt, no less) because my bench numbers are so low. I’m hoping, hoping for a bodyweight bench at my upcoming meet.
Yes, M-in-MD, I have definitely found that strength is transferable between squat and DL. Drive squat numbers up and the DL follows. For sure.
I started liking bench when I had to do it with other people. Competition – and a spotter – seemed to work.
My weak lift is squat; but it’s never okay to say you “hate” squatting.
Your plan looks cool – but confusing. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your workouts because I actually didn’t understand the article. All those heavy singles look tough!
i hate benching tooo!!! that Turkish getup looks most hard…i’ll have to try it and fall on my ass ![]()

Did you have a coach? Did you stick to 5/3/1 when you were training for those meets? I think I’d like to meet with someone at least once a week or so…I train alone, but it would be nice to have someone there to yell at me…I felt the same about squats as I do bench, but now its reversed…you gotta do what you hate to get better at it![/quote]
I did a cyle and a half of 5/3/1 and did okay at the meet (hell it was only a deadlift meet), but most of it was strength carried over from my own program and I didn’t hit the top weight I wanted. 5/3/1 and I don’t seem to get along too well. It’s a stellar program, but doesn’t suit my psychology. I like short, heavy and frequent sessions with lots of different lifts.
Maraudermeat used to coach me about a year back, but I started figuring out what worked for me and so he let me toddle on my merry way. I still steal ideas from him though. I vid my lifts so others can critique or so I can find my own form flaws or just to mark PRs. I vid it all, I don’t post it all. It’s a valuable tool for getting better at this if you don’t have someone to train with.
Your comments re: 5/3/1 are interesting, DaCharm. I seem to need to regularly lift to max (or beyond) to keep my CNS trained. Once I drop weight, even if I add reps (and reps and reps), my 1 RM suffers. And 1 RM is all that matters on the platform.
^ word…well, whatever it is your doing is working!!!
Good training today…
Squats, more weight more reps= awesome
7x5x125! ![]()
Inverted chins?
4x10- still working on getting the legs straight out…
Tricep stuff…
Decline sit ups with 25lb plate…tried it behind my head.hahaaha! I did however figure out a way to make it more challenging…you hold it straight up, with both hands, towards the ceiling…3x12…ow…still sore from Wednesday…
Then some sprints…did 5 on the upright bike- 10s all out, then recover…didn’t like, cause I felt in the first few seconds you could get up to 130-135rpm, and the wheel was flying on its own…switched to sprints on the treadmill- 5x@ 9.5mph-10s, then recover… a lot of sweat and jello leg feeling followed…

Pretty!
I think I’ve said it before . . . but your squats are really, really nice. Deliberate, perfect form, nice little arch, good depth.
And gorgeous hair!
Your husband will return home to one hot mama!
^ awwwww, you just made my day!
This makes me happy to hear…and squats are my most challenging lift…used to hate em, cause it just didn’t feel right…thats cause I was trying to do a million reps at once, which sucks anyway…
And for taller peeps, I think staying in the 3-6 rep range works…this way you can go HEAVY without your form breaking down…I guess that goes for anyone really…
Thanks again K!! : ) yay…
oh hey, Pch, whats up?

Exactly. 5/3/1 was designed as a slow progress program. You can do it for years and get stronger all the time. But you won’t have as high a 1RM as when other methods are used. You will be joint-healthy, in good condition and strong, but your max won’t be as high as it could be in my opinion. And that’s what matters for me right now.
Pretty squats. I say still moar weight on the bar!
DCA makes a good point about 5/3/1. I am liking it because my goal is to get stronger, but not necessarily to have a big-ass 1RM.
