Anyone Here Into Modifying Their Car??

 1. They’re talking about a Ford Mustang. Preaching to the choir?
 2. How often do you drive faster than 80?

Above 80? Pretty much every weekend and trips to and from home. =D (Military. I go home once/twice a month to VA from NC. Taking back roads and avoiding the interstate is a fine art.)

Fine. I read it in a “you really disgust me” type of tone, but I realize that you might not have meant it in that way. Not everyone can use their engine to its full potential and enjoying or modifying the things you can use while you’re stuck in traffic on your way to work isn’t bad. Good rant.

Lulz.

Kind of. More so annoyed. Basically, if someone said “I spend an hour on the eliptical a day, I’m a total beast.” Most everyone here would laugh and consider said person to be a fool.

Kind of the same way with me and cars. Someone whose car knowledge doesnt go past turning the car on and putting her in drive doesnt rate to be considered a gear head by any means.

Mayhaps I got carried away?

Bitch, please.

There have been two other threads since last October comparing the Ford Mustang to other cars in its class…which was how I initially made my decision.

Why would we mention “0-60” again just for you?

That means that half a year after we first discussed all of these issues…the moment we discuss something like the phone in the car, YOU are the one to tell everyone here what a pussy they are?

I was military too.

Kids are always speaking when the grown ups are talking.

If you bought a car it shouldve been based on it’s 0-60…estimated 1/4 mile? Top speed? Braking distance? How many horses does it produce at peak RPM? 5 speed ot 6? Is it loud enough to piss off you neighbor? Can I make it loud enough to piss off my neighbor? How does it handle a turn at 60mph? Naturally aspirated or force induced? How many cylinders(6 minimum - 4 if it has a turbo/supercharger)? Can I make it FASTER?

And whoever made the comment on “Doesnt that void your warranty?” You, sir, should be slapped. If you’re worried about your fucking warranty, you have no business modifying cars. The only warranty a gear head has are is own two hands, the tools in them, and the knowledge he possesses about internal combustion.

I would take an unmolested, broken down 98 Eclipse GSX over your brand new 2011 Merc/BMW/Lexus any day of the week…why you ask? And there’s a special satisfaction knowing you didn’t need to succumb to someone else to do it. That and…because when I smoke check your ass at the redlight while you were trying to show off in front of your girl, youre going to realize you dropped 60k on a car that just got beat by my junkyard god. “But my car is nice inside with the leather interior and on star?” Bitch please…you’re talking to a guy that believes A/C is an optional ammenity.

And BTW…1000 HP is a raging pain in the ass. DCR (Darrel Cox Racing) has a 2004 Dodge Neon with 1100 horses. It runs a 7.9? second 1/4 mile. Don’t believe me? Call them yourself. I did. They shattered every piece of that car with forged internals, twin big turbo kits, and a built automatic transmission at least 4 times over before getting it to make a pass without falling apart. Aaaaand…it’s not street legal. Even if it was, you’d be in the shop replacing parts more than you would be driving around.

I used to be big into it, and so were a lot of my friends - the whole “boy racer” crowd.

Nothing special on my car; a better air filter, removing the cat sensor and changing the exhaust to stainless steel. It was a Mitsubishi FTO.

A lot of the guys I knew would by project cars to turn them into sub-10 1/4 milers. I helped every now and then, but fuck me it’s a lot of work. We’d take out and tear apart the engine, take the block in to get the cylinders bored out, get a good fuel management system installed, gas-flow the heads, etc. The biggest headache was putting the thing back together, being an older car would always result in a leak popping up every now and then.

Generally, I found that once you start buying newer cars that actually have some power already, the less you tend to change on them otherwise you end up looking like a douche. I sure as hell don’t have the time for a project car nowadays.

I don’t even have a car anymore, lol.

Agreed. There isn’t anything that I even need to add to that car unless I start racing it. There are too many cops at every corner in this city to even be worried about that. The 2011 V6 outperforms the V8 from just 3 years ago. It beats every car in its class as is.

I drive a ford XR5!

Zenon - was it a DSM? And why the fuck would you waste 10g on aethetics? I mean its your money, but DSM’s were built for the strip. Should’ve jumped for performance upgrades. I had a few buddys with DSM’s running sub 10’s. No spray. Just AWD goodness. If they didn’t break down so often, I’d buy on as a toy.
lol- I’m not sure why i did what i did, other than it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Most of the upgrades were done on a “what do i want to change next” kind of basis. Yeah it was a DSM -95- and it was a fun car to drive - mine never left me stranded, but it did need maintenance.

I did all that shit when I was younger, and will do it again later. Right now, I’m just glad I’m not driving a minivan. I’m a broke single parent of three, so excuse the fuck out of me if doing heavy engine/suspension modifications to my only vehicle isn’t a priority.

I wasn’t here last October - I was under the hood of an 11 second GSX. Besides, what to the two other threads have to do with this one? Youre argument = invalid.

Pussy? Hardly, but if you post in a “modify your car” type thread, maybe talk about real modifications? Not some hippie tech. I could careless if you mention your 0-60 to me. You chose the Ford over the Chevy cause of On Star…which is exaclty what I was getting at…you were looking at two PERFORMANCE cars and made a decision based on a crap ammenity. Thats like looking at two eco-friendly cars and instead of comparing MPG and fuel effeciency you made a decision based on color options. (derp.) O_o

I pointed out the fact I’m military to support my answer to someone else question. Why are you pointing out that youre prior military? No reason. Arguement = invalid.

Kid? Coming from someone worried about driving on a flat? Did your computer tell you it was safe to drive yet? How’s that rear tire anyway? Still a “bitch to change”? Here’s a hint…raise the ass end higher. (double derp.) But I guess you would’ve figured it out after your third trip to the stealership, eh? Hey, you know what a REAL pain in the ass is? Trouble shooting a misfiring cylinder with a new fuel and ignition system. THAT’S a bitch. So is ripping apart a transmission to replace one shatter gear. Be a man…change your own oil for once. =D

DSM - Daily Scheduled Maintenance

Hey, if you got a family…take care of that. You got your priorities straight man. My rant was mostly over the general distaste for those who claim to be some sort of gear monkey but in all reality couldn’t change check the air pressure in a tire without a manual to walk them through it. Just like lifiting and gym rats… don’t claim to be some sort of champion if you can barely do some body weight exercises. Juss sayin.

A storm approaches…
ARearViewAddict wrote:

Bullshit. I chose the Mustang because I drove both, spent several weeks pacing between the two, judged their performance, gas mileage and even the prevalence of them on the road. YOU simply fucking assumed that is all I based my decision on because you are a fucking newb who spoke before he understood the details or even who he was speaking with.

Who claimed to be a “gear monkey”? I like cars. I did my research…and yes, that even included the tech INSIDE the car.

I bought it brand new. I wanted to be sure I made the right choice. Why no pics of YOUR car?

RVA, chill the fuck out bro. I said that I worked on a Chevy Nova when I was a kid and that I was considering buying a muscle car.

THEN I chimed in COMPLAINING about a “hippy feature” on my old BMW 330i (which I bought with a sports package and had tuned for performance). I was also making a funny.

Why didn’t I do all the tuning myself on my BMW? Because engines have gotten a whole hell of a lot more complicated since 1971! And your disdain for those concerned about voiding their warranty is just short sighted at best and childish at worst. Not all of us are the cool grease monkey that you are. Not all of us CARE to be. I didn’t see anyone on this board claiming to be something they’re not.

And FTR, I DO change my own oil and check my tire pressure. Without a manual. No need to act like a douchebag. If you want we can nominate you to be the official car guru for GAL. How does that sound? Can I PM you with car questions? You REALLY sound like you know your way around an engine. I don’t know about the other guys here, but I know I’M impressed!

I haven’t modded much in quite a while, and my mods have never been real major, as until recently I only ever had 1 vehicle, and couldn’t be broke down. I used to drive a full size Bronco that I’d lifted a couple inches, bigger tires, lockers front and rear, turned the AC unit into an air compresser, duel exhaust, and put an upgraded sound system into (nothing real loud, just swapped from the paper speakers, to rubber / aluminem so they’d stand up to the moisture better, and a cd player instead of a tape deck). That thing went out the door when I had my first baby after much proding from the wife).

After that I had a Grand Marque that I replaced the 302 with a 351. No replacement for displacement amiright? The car I drive now is a 97 Seville STS, and it’s really all the car I could really want these days. I’m gonna gank the engine this summer and rebuild it, but I’ll be doing it to stock specs. 300 horse from the stock motor in my 4 door family wagon is all that I really need. I thought about super charging it, and redoing it, but it’s just not worth the trade off in reliability. I just bought a 95 Sierra 1500 for a work truck. I’ll probably toss some lockers in that thing at some point.

I’m waiting until my son is older to do anything serious. I’ve been thinking I’d like to do either a late 80s Monte SS, or a late 80s Camero with him once he’s old enough to really appreciate, and understand the work. And maybe do a Jeep for him, or a full size blazer after that (the car is for me - I have no intention of killing my son with a speed machine).

Actuallly…

Wow, that feature would certainly be useful on my Porsche. I swear I have to measure and adjust the tyre pressures every 2-3 months.

That is the main reason I got it over the Camarro. Though the Camaro has On star, the computer in this talks to me. I freaking LOVE talking on the phone through my car.
Your words, not mine bro.

EDIT: You own a relatively new Mustang…that bitch has a spare in the trunk and a jack stand from the factory…LULz. But you CHOSE to have it towed? ROFL. That makes sense. Based on that “Changing the tired was a bitch” comment you made earlier - its all starting to make sense now.

Umm…kids have someone else deal with their problems instead of rolling up their sleeves and dealing it with themselves. You sound like someone that paid someone else to deal with your problem - where does that put you?

Angry Chicken - Rant wasn’t addressed to you specifically man. I’m guessing that Chevy Nova was cherry though. I just get upset with people like Professor Derp here who bought a no shit performance car but based his decision on a talking computer?

Just for Prof X.

An extremely older photo. Before massive overhaul under the hood.

Current mods:
AGP Solid Engine Mounts
AGP Solid Transmission Mount
AGP Short Ram Intake
AGP Stage 1 Wastegate Actuator
AGP Hotside Pipe
AGP Big Front Mount Intercooler
AGP Coldside w/ HKS flange
HKS SSQIII Blow Off Valve
AGP 3" O2 Housing
ATP 3" Catless Turboback Exhaust (has an interchangable CAT for inspection season)
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
AGP Fuel Returnline Fuel Kit
AGP Fuel Pressure Regulator
AGP 650cc Fuel Injectors
Diablo Sport Trinity
Mopar Short Throw Shifter
ICW Light Weight Alloy Racing Rims
Nexen N3000 Performance Tires

As soon as I get back from the sand box:
ETS Direct Fit Chargepipe
62MM Throttle body
Ported Intake Manifold
Stage 2 Werks Race Transmission
Clutchmasters Stage 3/4 Clutch w/ Aluminum Flywheel
Modern Performance Rebuild Kit (Head)
Modern Performance Rebuild Kit (Block)
Perrin Fuel Rail
AEM Wideband
AEM Boost Gauge replacement
DevilsOwn Water/Methonal Injection Kit
AGP Coilover Kit
Modern Performance Suspension Bushing Replacements
Mishimoto Radiator w/ Silicon Hosing
Haven’t decided on a Turbo replacement, but that’s happening too. It’ll replace the turbo, exhaust manifold, and wastegate (stage 1 from AGP wont be strong enough to hold all the pressure)

All for the crack head price of ~6K. (Yes, thats exactly what I’m spending my deployment money on.) I may consider weight reduction if I can get a daily driver for cheap. Every part, every check engine light, and every bolt and nut was handled in my garage. The only time someone else worked on my car was when I was in Georgia on vacation and I needed my oil changed. I was forced to go to a JiffyLube type establishment and I watched those terrorists like a hawk.

It’s all good. I gotta say, I wish I had the time/space/tools to work on cars more. That engine you got there is a work of fucking art, man. I can tell by the way you arranged/secured everything that you didn’t cut any corners and are very passionate about it. What part of VA do you call home?
