Anyone here drink red wine?

Would drinking a 6 ounce glass of merlot 3-5x a week at night be benificial? I hear alot of the pros about drinking red wine.

Any thoughts-suggestions?

Hmm…I’ll ask my Grandfather, who is 88…he’s lived most of his life having a glass of wine with his dinner, and he’s as healthy as an Ox still. shrug Anecdotal, I know, but still…

I wouldn’t drink it @ night because it spikes insulin. Perhaps pre-workout with some ALA.

I forgot to say that I would be drinking it with dinner which consists of low carbs, high protien, and moderate fat. Consuming the wine with dinner would surley slow down the insulin release wouldn’t it?

Actually red wine increases insulin sensitivity. By Developing a certain branch of eicosanoids. Dr. Eades in Protein Power talks about this and sites a study.

Recent research has shown that red wine was not as beneficial as once thought. Past research had shown a link between certain components of red wine (polyphenolic antioxidants) of which certain flavonols are apart of. It was proposed that red wine may prevent LDL and atherosclerosis. A recent study (2001 I know) showed that simple intake of vegetables (I believe onions to be one) where actually more bioavailable and consequently better absorbed than flavonols from red wine. Red wine is OK, but it looks like good old veggies are better. Besides, never listen to any pro’s advice:)

I think that if you’re drinking red wine for strictly health benefits and worrying about insulin then you’re better off not drinking red wine at all, because you won’t really be enjoying it. Wine is a pleasure, meant to be enjoyed with good food, not a tool or a supplement in the pursuit of 5% bodyfat. Get real.

Here’s another point of view from drweil.com
IT’S NOT ABOUT THE WINE

Ever wonder why wine is linked with better health? Some researchers have suggested that antioxidants in grapes are responsible but now results of a big study of more than 4,400 men and women suggest that it isn’t the wine but the fact that people who drink wine tend to have healthier habits than other drinkers. Their diets are healthier, and they’re less likely to smoke. What’s more, the study also found that wine drinkers exercise more and eat more vegetables than teetotalers.
The researchers also found that compared to people who prefer other types of alcohol, wine drinkers generally ate more fiber, less saturated fat and cholesterol and, overall, drank less alcohol. Summing up their study results, published in the August issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers concluded that lifestyle factors - not wine - may be responsible for the health benefits attributed to wine.

Two points: the component that is attributed to the benefits of red wine is reservatrol. Reservatrol is known, among other things, to clear excess estrogen from the body. Incidentally it is in biotest’s M. Second, I read an interview with the NHL oldest player Igor Larionov (Detroit Wings, age 42). He explains his sports longevity with his clean diet and the fact that every evening he drinks half a glass of red wine. He added ‘now that I am over 40 I incresed it to a full glass’.

While we don’t drink wine everday - we will crack open a couple of bottles on occasion and have our own “taste test” at home. But Ko would like to expand our collection at home…I’ll drink wine til the day I die. Oh, that and beer.

Actually the component I was talking about was quercetin and is found in yellow onions.

Paging Timmy.

No I wouldn’t drink wine just for the health benefits. I love wine period (red wine that is).

Peace.

Does anyone know of any health related benefits of white wine? I had heard once or twice that it was good for the kidneys and decreased kidney stone risks…
Anyone hear this???
