Anyone Else Hate Doctors?

I had a fusion done on my neck. Any surgery carries risk. Docs believe they can help but sometimes, things don’t work out. I had so many therapists and chiros tell me what they could do and none of them helped.

After over 4 years i finally got the surgery. I didn’t recover fast, I didn’t feel better right away, but now I feel as good as ever and I’m back in full swing. I was in a rush to get back to lifting and even rolling. The doc gave me a therapist and warned me about coming back too fast. i listened. Docs are not about trying to optimize recovery times and shorten rehab just cause you think you’re an athlete…Jesus…

Doctors are smart but more than that they work hard to get where they are. Some have attitudes, many are bitter that people don’t care for themselves, and many really want to help. You notice the bad ones.

What about most chiros. My buddy is a good one but many chiros are aweful and useless.

What about supplements for health…Most are a SCAM. REad any supposed supplement journal and it’s full of ads.

Docs, surgery and drugs aren’t perfect. They are serious treatments with possible risks and you need to take ownership of your own health. Fire bad docs, read up on surgery and drugs. Or, if you can treat yourself with supplements and massage, then you know what, you don’t need a doctor and in time you’ll heal.

People die despite everyone’s best efforts, people break. That’s people, we’re sort of fragile. Who’s fault is that?

I liked the one that said “medicate and operate”. So what else do you expect? A back rub, a quickie, a BJ or what? This what we are trained to do: medicate and operate. I like it when people complain about being on too many pills: hey, that’s why you’re still around to bitch about your doctor being a moron for prescribing them to you! And if you don’t like them, stop taking them! And remember, if anything goes wrong, it’s always your doctor’s fault!
Wow…well I shouldn’t be all that surprised by this I suppose.

First of all I stated that all they do is “medicate and operate.” That does not mean that those two things are inherently bad. In fact, they can be very helpful in many situations.

But…if that’s all they do then we have a much larger problem than most people think.

One example:

If you see a medical doctor about your sore shoulder he/she is likely to do two things, first take an xray and secondly prescribe some sort of pain killer and or muscle relaxant.

That’s it!

Most likely there will be no talk of using ice. No talk of recommending natural anti-inflammatory nutritional products such as fish oil (there are many others).

Now, is John Q. Public supposed to know about these things on their own?

Well here at T-Nation we do know about those things and much more. But the average person goes to a medical doctor so that he/she can give them the proper recommendations.

Giving the proper recommendations sometimes means to “medicate or operate.” But often it means something else entirely and the typical doctor is out to lunch when it comes to anything else.

And that is a real shame!

Got a real simple suggestion for everyone who thinks MDs are worthless…don’t go to them. Perhaps they’ll be a bodybuilding supplement that will come out to help you someday…
Medical doctors are decent for what they do: “Medicate and or operate.” If you need either of those two things you cannot be in better hands in this country.

Beyond that they are not worth much. And in addition to that they are a very sorry lot when it comes to proper communication and good bedside manner.

Zeb I agree with many of your points but also I get the impression that there are a lot of really pissed off patients hanging around these boards.

Maybe there are a lot of really shitty doctors around the U.S. … I don’t know.

I do think people here are complaining mostly about things that are so insignificant that it is a joke … who here is complaining that the doctors stuffed up on their cancer, stroke, epilepsy, etc… and so forth? Nobody that I can see. People seem to be complaining that the doctors are not giving them sports medicine related advice/treatment.

It is true if you go to a doc with a sore shoulder they will do an xray and give painkillers usually. But most docs don’t give a crap if you have a sore shoulder unless it is broken somehow. If it is sore because you’ve been lifting your bodyweight overhead then it is your own stupid fault.

Note that I don’t really mean that you are stupid for doing that, just that, if you are going to do stuff like lift weights then you have got to have some understanding how to look after yourself. You should not expect the government sponsored health system to do that for you - unless you are injured.

However I really do wish the medical profession would re-structure itself - I would love to have a new kind of doctor, a preventative health / diet / sports injury / mild diagnose and referral type doctor.

You go in, you tell them the problem. They assess whether it is likely to be really serious and need to refer you to a general practitioner etc… for further diagnosis who in turn might refer you to a specialist (xrays? psyche assessment in case you are a hypochondriac? neuro? etc…) … otherwise if it does not seem too serious then they treat you for general health concerns. Not disease, but health concerns.

Maybe the pharmacists should fit this role, I don’t know. You could drop in for friendly and quick nutrition / soreness advice.

The big part of the problem though is this : there is no concensus on what is good fitness advice. Every doc will have their own opinion on weightlifting, for example. And on running. You can’t expect them all to give the same advice unless they are all taught the same stuff.

If you want advice on any of these things you need to talk to specialists in the area, and maybe, to top coaches and athletes. What to do about your sore shoulder is cutting edge fitness knowledge, not general medical practitioner knowledge. You’d have to add another year to their degree to cover this stuff - at least. It ain’t going to happen.

yeah,i hate them.
they are people who forbid things.
they forbid you to eat what you want.
they forbid you drinking and smoking.
they forbid you doing some things.
they forbid.
they are forbiders.
i hate that.

The government forbids me to kill people and rape goats up the ass! Fuck them! They don’t know shit! Forbidders!

I’ll take you up on that. I’m never going to the doctor again.
I hear what your sayin,I have been to docs for things from knee surgery ,shoulder surg. being poisoned by toxic chems and having organs removed along with cancer surgery.I have only come across 3 docs out of all the ones i have seen that i considered professional and werent just in it for the money.

I have known other people that have been F’uped by the medical profession and should have been compensated but by the time they would have payed lawyer fees the little amount of money they would have recieved wasnt worth it.There are a lot of people that should be sueing docs and hospitals that dont because they dont have the money.

What other profession can you screw up so bad and still be paid well for it and not have to suffer any consequences

SD, IFB, Pickles. Ok, I can only come up with 3. Maybe I should start a contest to dig up all your names. that might be enlightening.

Pickles?
Yeah. I figured that one out too. I should have known right off nobody could really be that stupid. If you don’t remember you probably just forgot. I imagine it’s hard to keep track of all the names you use.
