Just trying to touch base with regard to training methods - particularly of the running/speed variety. Strength and power discussions related to weight training are always welcome as well. I’m 31 these days and keeping up with the kids right out of school gets harder and harder. Perhaps I’m simply whining and need an enabler, but I look forward to your responses nonetheless.
Yup. Played high school, college and now in a men’s club league. And I still suck. At 29, I feel your pain. As far as training goes - renegade style would be best if lacrosse was my main goal. But in truth I try lots different routines I get from T-mag. Injury prevention is key as you get older. I sprint once a week and do legs once a week, too, in addition to games. I also do chest and back twice each week and arms and delts once. What position do you play? Go UVA.
I’m a midfielder who faces off as well. Not a FOGO, mind you, but a middie who plays offense, defense and runs the whole field. I’m quite familiar with and enamored of the Renegade Traning methods. I’m currently trying to get a little more fit and have been jumping a lot of rope with ballistic dumbbell exercises thrown in between rounds. I only have one “true” weightlifting day per week where I try to hit everything starting with squates/front squats and moving biggest to smallest through body parts until I finish with some form of biceps exercise. As far as running goes, I’m a big fan of the 400’s and have made much use of CT’s running man article. I do speed and agility work as well implementing a weighted vest depending upon the testiness of my various aches and pains. I’m interesterd to try kettlebells, though I’m unaware of their translation to improved performance on the lacrosse field. As they are widely touted to improve athleticism in general, I suppose they can’t hurt me. Whereabouts do you play ball? Do you play in any of the tourneys around the country. I just finished the Vail tournament this last weekend with the Rocky Mountain Oysters in the Men’s Elite division.
Hey,
lax player here, currently awaiting knee surgery and pipeline back to d1 for 5th year of school,
I suggest charlie francis style methods or davies methods.
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you here. I didn’t go to Vail, but I’ll play in the Breck tourney for sure. Do you cycle all your training? I am going to try to get a bit bigger and stronger this summer, switch over to Olympic lifts in winter, and hopefully next spring I’ll be in even better shape than I was in college. Of course, in college, all we did is run long distances, which is stupid. I am also a middie, although I can’t face off. In college and high school I played attack, but in the men’s leagues it seems like there is more demand for middies, since guys start getting out of shape.
Adam, where do you play D1? Good luck with your knee surgery!
Former MD Terp midfielder here…i suggest running hills and hitting the weights…squats and deads…thats what they had us doing when i played 1992-96
Rocket Lax:
Do you play ball in Colorado? If so, I’d love to find someone of a similar athletic bent and philosophy to train/run with. Where did you play in school?
