Antagonist to Glute Ham Raise

Last Saturday, I tried an exercise that I have never seen listed anywhere. I’m sure it’s well known to the exercise experts, but I don’t even know what it’s called let alone whether it’s a “good” or “bad” exercise.

The exercise in question starts with you in a kneeling position similar to the Glute Ham Raise exercise, but instead of going forwards, you go backwards. Your initial movement ends with you lying down on your back with your lower legs folded underneath your upper. You then reverse the movement using effectively your “knees” to lift yourself back up to the starting position (hips don’t move either up or down).

I did 5x5 of these supersetted with GHR as an experiment. I have to say my quads have truly never been so sore in my life.

Does anyone have any insight on this exercise - what’s it called, is it good or bad? Any info appreciated.

Kinda like this? This exercise is called a “leg thuner” and it was first designed by Jerry Telle. I also talked about it in one of my violent variation article.

It can be relatively effective, but people with knee problems should really stay away from it.

It’s not truely an antagonist to GHR though. A true antagonist for the GHR would be a full sit-up with the legs straight and the feet anchored.

That’s the one! Thanks for the info.

I’ll bear the knee points in mind. I may do a few more to see how I get on with them.

The full sit-up you describe sounds even tougher than this “thuner” (which was hard enough for me). I think I’ll leave that one for another day.

I appreciate the info Christian. Now I know what to look for, I can check this out some more.

My knees hurt just looking at that.
