In the interveiw Dr.Serrano talks about melatonin and sleep. I was wondering if Valerian root will effect the bodies abillity to produce mel. I know that if you Supplement with melatonin it will hinder the bodies abillity to produce it naturally.

I don’t know how it could. You’re talking about two completely different compounds. Melatonin is produced by the body. Valerian root is an herb. Valerian doesn’t exert its effects through hormonal mechanisms to my knowledge. It simply has a calming/relaxing effect on the body. It is not only used for sleep purposes but also for anxiety as well, so I highly doubt there is anything to worry about.
Monty nailed it. Valerian’s effects are sedative in nature, acting upon the CNS. It’s a great muscle relaxant, helps with anxiety, muscle tension and muscle spasm. It’s an excellent choice of sleep aids for anyone who does heavy/power lifting and finds that they’ve overly stimulated the CNS.
Give it a try. Another favorite of mine is L-Theanine. Although I have to admit I use L-Theanine in addition to melatonin.
Melatonin has tremendous health and anti-aging benefits. It’s an excellent antioxidant and free-radical scavenger. It is breast cancer protective. It stabilizes sleep patterns for those suffering from jet lag. Its benefits go on and on. I’m only scratching the surface.
It’s not that the body stops making melatonin because you supplement. Unfortunately, as we grow older, the body makes less and less, resulting in greater difficulty falling asleep. I supplement with melatonin to bring levels up to optimal.

Not overkill at all. Overkill is when you take more than you need to get the job done. Experiment. Find out what your body responds best to. And then take what you need to get a good night’s sleep.
From a health perspective, should a person take melatonin even if they have no problem sleeping?
